Catholic Schools Week: Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week from January 29th to February 4th is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses & other activities for students, families, parishioners & community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation. Every day will have a special theme, which individual schools and parishes will promote in their own way within the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) guidelines. The daily themes are as follows: Sunday, January 29: Celebrating Your Parish Monday, January 30: Celebrating Your Community Tuesday, January 31: Celebrating Your Students Wednesday, February 1: Celebrating the Nation Thursday, February 2: Celebrating Vocations Friday, February 3: Celebrating Faculty, Staff, and Volunteers Saturday, February 4: Celebrating Families Christian Unity: The Connecticut Council for Interreligious Understanding (CCIU) welcomes and celebrates the increasing religious diversity in Connecticut and the United States. We aspire to be recognized as a leading organization promoting interfaith dialogue and understanding in order to achieve mutual respect, justice, and peace. CCIU's mission is to promote public awareness, understanding about, and respect for, Connecticut's religious pluralism through an array of programs and initiatives. CCIU's principal focus is on educating youth and adults about the world's religions, the values they share in common, their differences, and how they have contributed to our respective world views and identities. If you would like additional information, please call 860-566-9556 or email [email protected]. CCIU is located at 77 Sherman Street, Hartford, CT 06105. JANUARY 22, 2017 Masterpieces of God's Creation: Pope Francis encourages every Catholic to uphold the inestimable value of all human life. Even the weakest and most vulnerable- the sick, the old, the unborn, and the poor- are masterpieces of God's creation, made in His own image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect. Human life should always receive the protection that is its due. The glory of God is seen in a living human being. We must let the light of that glory shine so brightly that everyone may come to recognize the inestimable value of all human life.

If you haven’t done so already, please voice your opposition to the federal health care mandate by calling U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell at 202-205-5445 and your elected representatives. 2017 Souper Bowl of Caring: On Super Bowl Sunday, tens of millions of people will enjoy the warmth of friendship and the satisfaction of food and drink while watching the Super Bowl football game on TV. Unfortunately, at the same time, countless other people will feel cold and hungry. The Souper Bowl of Caring is the result of thousands of young people joining together to fight hunger and poverty in their local communities. This unique, youth-led movement of caring is transforming the nation’s biggest weekend of football into its largest weekend of giving. Since the program started in 1990, over $88 million has been raised for local charities across the country. Students from our Religious Education Program and the Cathedral Ushers will be collecting at the entrances on the weekend of February 4th & 5th. Please be generous. Every dollar goes to the Cathedral’s Food Pantry. If you would like to learn more about the Souper Bowl of Caring, please visit tacklehunger.org.

JANUARY 22, 2017 Blessing of the Throats: In honor of the Feast of St. Blaise, the Cathedral will have Blessing of the Throats available on Friday, February 3rd after the 7:30 am & 12:10 pm Masses. Rosary Prayer Committee: Start your day in prayer! Everyone is welcome to join our Rosary Prayer Committee in reciting the Holy Rosary in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. On Wednesdays, we meet from 7-7:30 am, which is followed by Mass at 7:30 am. On Saturdays, we meet from 9:30 am-10:30 am, which is after Mass at 9 am. Alive in Christ: All high school students are invited to join us for an exciting one-day Catholic Youth Rally with engaging worship, speakers, music, & faith-filled fellowship with teens from around the Archdiocese of Hartford on Sunday, April 30th from 1-8 pm at the Cathedral of St. Joseph. Forms and payment are due by April 18th. “Come And Follow Me” Are you following the Cathedral of Saint Joseph on social media? Facebook.com/CathedralOfSaintJoseph @HtfdCathedral @CathedralOfSaintJoseph Also follow the Archdiocese of Hartford and Archbishop Blair! Facebook.com/ArchdioceseOfHartford @ArchbishopBlair @ArchdioceseOfHartford

Safety, Security and Access: The new entrance and elevator is now fully functional, so you may park in the Asylum avenue lots and enter the Cathedral through the west entrance. This makes access to the Cathedral much easier. In order that all who come to the Cathedral may pray and worship in peace, we each need to do our part. Obviously we abide by the norm, “If you see something, say something!” As a parish located in the City and with our doors (literally) open to all, extra vigilance is neededespecially in the summer months. Should you be approached by someone asking for money, please tell one of the priests, one of the two security guards, Peter our sacristan or one of the ushers or other liturgical ministers. We have procedures in place for assisting those in need, the mentally ill or those who might just be “panhandling.” It normally is not a good idea to give cash and please do not agree to give anyone you do not know a ride in your car. Also parents are asked NOT to allow children to go the bathrooms by themselves. They must be accompanied by an adult. Now with the new and much needed addition, containing an elevators and restrooms, it will be more difficult to know who is actually in the Cathedral at a given moment. Do not leave items unattended in the pews when you go forward to receive Holy Communion.
