Then write and submit an essay of 300 words or less outlining your goals and your ability to make a difference as a "Lamplighter." If no faculty member has proof of a character defect or a serious deficiency which would make you unworthy of this award, your application and essay will be read and ranked by a committee of senior class members selected for this purpose. Student names on the essays will be blacked out during the processing of this scholarship because of confidentiality. This committee will also consider the personal qualities of the applicants to determine which one best fits Arthur Berggren's definition of a "Lamplighter" for this class. The senior class is given great responsibility, and students in the class become importantly involved. Arthur Berggren said “I wrote the hobgoblin piece to lead the student body into serious thought.” “Today, greed seems to have dethroned decency. Hopefully, my statement may encourage parents to remind young minds that helping one another should come back in style.”

The Arthur E. Berggren LAMPLIGHTER SCHOLARSHIP STATEMENT Today, we can put man on the moon, but man still huddles fearfully in the dark ages. All of earth's children are afraid of the darkness because there are hobgoblins out there whom they think will do them harm. And the hobgoblins fear us because they think we want to kill them. But since everyone knows that hobgoblins can exist only in the dark, we can banish fear by simply lighting up the world. And there is hope. From every corner of the world, voices of reason are being heard. They are the lamplighters who begin to brighten the hopes of humanity. Our world needs many lamplighters. Teachers who care can lead the way. Statesmen must replace our politicians. Journalists should educate. But if the senior class of Stillwater Area High School and the University of Minnesota can produce a super lamplighter . . . that would be even better than being #1 in football. During April of your graduating year, representative senior students will be asked to choose a winner of this scholarship; the classmate whom they think may in one way or another, make a difference; a dreamer who has the intelligence, the courage and the will to make dreams come true. Without a crystal ball, it is very hard to know how tall one of your classmates may grow . . . but students are often very good judges of their peers. Arthur E. Berggren
