February 27th, 2014

@Pontifex Pope Francis is on Twitter at the above address. On the 18 th of February he tweeted ‘Let us learn from Christ how to pray, to forgive, to sow peace, and to be near those in need.’ A very simple message, but I can’t think of a better way to describe the essence of Christianity in twenty words. Twitter may not be the 21 st Century equivalent of the printing press, but it does have at least one virtue in keeping the message brief. Some of us need that. ‘Pontifex’ comes originally from the Latin ‘bridge builder’ and it was used in ancient Rome to describe a man on the highest council of priests. From it we also have the word ‘pontiff’. I’m sure it’s no accident that Pope Francis chose ‘Pontifex’ as his twitter name. Francis has marked the first months of his Papacy in many ways, but communication and bridge building have been obvious priorities, hence he is the first Pope to use Twitter. Pope Francis leads us into a new era in the Catholic Church and although there may be many changes, his simple message above reflects an unchanging truth. Throughout all the history, changes, failings, trials and tribulations, as well as the silent labours of millions of Catholics to make this world a better place, the essence of what it is to be a Christian is as it always was. Project Compassion Speaking of those good works, the season of Lent, which begins with Ash Wednesday next week, also marks the beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. Donations to Project Compassion allow Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to alleviate poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice. Each family will receive a Project Compassion box and/or a set of envelopes for their donations or you can donate online via the website at www.caritas.org.au Please put your compassion into action this Lent by supporting the 2014 Project Compassion Appeal Commissioning Liturgy The Commissioning Liturgy will be held on Friday the 7 th of March in the SSJ commencing at 10.00 a.m. At this event we will be commissioning our College Leaders, both Primary and Secondary, and introducing our Captains for 2014. All parents are invited to attend. Please RSVP to the College Office by Monday the 3 rd of March. Secondary Meet the Teacher Evening The Secondary meet the teacher evening will be on Wednesday the 19 th of March. The evening will commence with a BBQ for all families, then a gathering in the SSJ. Following that, we move to Tutor Groups. We warmly encourage students to attend. Swimming Carnivals Both Primary and Secondary swimming carnivals have now been completed and our Infant carnival is due on Thursday the 27th of February at the Glenorchy Pool between 10.00 am -12.30 pm The carnivals were outstanding events, not only judging by the participation rates and individual achievements but as wonderful opportunities to foster the growing House Spirit in the College. The Primary carnival was held in beautiful weather (mostly!) at Glenorchy and the Secondary at the Hobart Aquatic Centre (where the weather is always the same). There are many people to thank, but chief among those are our Carnival organisers, Mr Adam Mills and Mr Paul Guinane and our many parent volunteers, especially Mrs Shea Henderson who yet again devoted her time and her considerable expertise to the Secondary swimming carnival.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL Early Childhood Swimming Carnival The infant carnival will be held on Thursday, the 27th of February at the Glenorchy pool. Parents and Friends AGM The P & F held their Annual General Meeting on Monday night and I am pleased to announce the following Office Bearers have been elected for the 2014 year: Mrs Michelle Stolp—President Mrs Jane Capp—Secretary Mrs Sharyn White—Treasurer Ms Michelle Williams—TCPCS Representative I take this opportunity to sincerely thank our Executive for 2013, many of whom are continuing for 2014. In particular I would like to acknowledge the work and commitment of Mrs Michelle Stolp as President and Mrs Jo Fitzpatrick, our Development Officer. Michelle leads a very hard-working and dedicated group of parents who meet each month in the College Library to support our school in all sorts of ways. At a time when schools struggle to retain the vibrant Parents and Friends Associations of past years, Sacred Heart’s Parent group remains strong and active, supported and connected to the College thanks to Jo’s work, keenly interested in our Mission and strongly supporting our work. This year the P & F are again organising the College Fair which is a major undertaking. SATIS Swimming Carnival Best wishes to our SATIS Swimming Team for the upcoming Southern SATIS swimming carnival at the Hobart Aquatic Centre on Tuesday the 4th of March. Congratulations to the squad who are currently in training. I hope to be able to announce the College Swimming Team and our Swimming Captains for 2014 in our next Newsletter. Student and Family Information Records Update At the beginning of the school year all families received important documents relating to school information. I ask that you fill out the forms and alert us to any changes, particularly in health and contact details. This information is vital to our safety and welfare systems and prompt return would be greatly appreciated. Students should return forms to your child’s Class Teacher in primary and Tutor Teacher secondary. If you have any questions or require a duplicate of this form please contact the College on 6279 4090. College Photos, Publications and Media One of the documents contained in the package above asks you to alert us if you DO NOT wish your child to appear in any photographs or videos which may be published by the College on our website or in College publications (Sursum Corda, the College annual etc.). Please fill in the relevant documentation and alert us if you have any objection to your child appearing in any images. Student Achievement Congratulations this week to Tahlia Hunt (J2) who has broken the State record by 13 seconds in the 5000 metre Race Walk in a time of 25 minutes and 32 seconds. Well done Tahlia! Well done to Lauryn Todorovic (6W) who recently competed in the State 11 and Under Swimming Championships and gained 3 first places, 3 second places and 3 third places. She has also been selected in the 14 and Under Tasmanian State Water Polo Team to compete in Melbourne at the beginning of April. Lauryn is also raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave (information regarding donating later in this newsletter). Once again it is wonderful to see our students achieving great things in many diverse areas. With best wishes Mr. Craig Deayton PRINCIPAL

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Another summer of cricket and tennis I don’t really watch television for most of the year, but make up for it over summer with the cricket and tennis. This summer was no exception. You would have noticed that the behaviour of elite sportsmen and women can leave a bit to be desired at times. I was reading an article by Martin Crowe on this topic. I can’t find the article now, but I was very interested at the time in a point that Crowe made about the behaviour of elite tennis players. He wrote that Roger Federer and Raefal Nadal have both deliberately set very high standards of behaviour. Being two of the best players in the world for the past decade, their behaviour has been contagious amongst other elite players. I am presently reading Nadal’s autobiography and it is apparent that he is very humble and down to earth, despite all of his fame, wealth and success. As a Deputy Principal, a lot of my work is dealing with behaviour issues. More than half of the issues involve tempers fraying and an inability to keep emotions under control. It is encouraging that the likes of Federer and Nadal can be such good role models for all of us. A Josephite School I was away for some of last week with our College Captains and College Captains of Josephite schools from all over Australia and New Zealand. I was given the job of coming up with a statement of what a Josephite School is. With help from other teachers and students, this is what I came up with.

A Josephite School A Josephite school community is a place of faith, joy and tenacity. We are stewards of our earth and stand in solidarity and advocate for the vulnerable. We are called to be the hands and feet of Christ under the Southern Cross and lit by the Josephite charism.

Eamonn Pollard Deputy Principal

SECONDARY NEWS Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent. Lent is traditionally a time for penance, fasting and reflection. This season prepares Christians for Easter where they reconfirm their faith in Jesus Christ. It is a time where all of us are called to be more giving and prayerful. All students will attend a Liturgy of the Word ceremony on this day and shall be invited to receive the ashes. The ashes are made by burning the palms from last year’s Palm Sunday. Each participant will be marked on the forehead with a cross made out of the ashes as a sign of our need to ask for forgiveness and a recognition of our mortality. This is a significant day for the Church and is one that is observed by Catholics throughout the world. Peer Support On Monday 17 February, Grade 7 students participated in their first Peer Support session. The programme, in which small groups of Grade 7 students work with Grade 10 Peer Support Leaders, is designed to ease the transition between primary and high school. This week’s session was about group rules and dynamics. Congratulations to these Grade 10 students who will receive their Peer Support badges at this week’s campus assembly: Sophie Trounce, Joe Holloway, Seb Krasnicki, Brooke Little, Ashling Cannell, Izak Hangan, Mackenzie Stolp, Amelia Ward, Emma Kelly, Kira Ralph, Laura Stanwix, George Wilkinson, Amy Spandler, Taelah Aitchison, Maddie McNeil, Georgie Johnson, Charlie Woolley, Madie Blowfield, Bryce Roberts, Ari Ahearne, Brandy Howe, Brianna O’Keefe, Hannah Kaufman, Andrew Moore, Taki Xepapas, Demi Jameson, Sarah Scott, Nick Flack, Grace Lawless, Abbey Smith, Krista Patterson-Doyle, Rohan Corby, Georgia Bowerman, Gabby Chaffey, Lauren Norton, Hayley Doering, Maddie Rhodes, Harry Jensen and Hollie Moore.

Maths On Line Is Back Maths-On-Line is an internet based program which provides extra support for your child’s Mathematics class. It explains techniques, with examples which can be used by students, to reinforce concepts covered in class. Teachers use MathsOn-Line as homework, revision and as an alternative to teacher talk in the classroom. Often there will be a time limit on set assignments and students are expected to show their working out, for every task, in writing! All students should have been given their username and password and are able to login at home and at school. If your child does not have one, for some reason, please email your child’s Maths teacher. Parents also have access to MathsOn-Line and you can keep track of your child’s progress from home and from work. It is also a great way for a parent to get a bit of ‘revision’ if they want to help their child with a task but cannot remember back to grade 8. Students can print out the worksheet at home if the internet is 'down' at home and still complete their work on paper. Most tutors are more than happy to let students enter their results during tutor group if they are asked. This is a great resource to back up your child’s learning at school. The next time they say ‘I do not have any homework’ you can say ‘well you can do some Maths-On-Line then!’ Important tips for using Maths-On-Line to the fullest:  Working out counts!!! Get your child to print out the sheet and stick it into their book, recording their working out or save the environment and improve their copying skills and get them to copy the question into their book.  A little bit often is better than a lot at once. One sheet 3 times a week will be much more beneficial than getting them to do 10 sheets at a time.  Review + revise = Revision. Just because they completed the topic last month or last term is not a reason to ignore it. The more often they go over concepts covered earlier in the year the more likely they are to remember.

PRIMARY NEWS VALUE of the Week – “Friendship” John 15:15 “Jesus said: I do not call you servants anymore because a servant does not know what his master is doing. I speak to you as friends because I have told you everything that my Father has told me.” God wants to be your friend, give you good advice, and to be close to you when you need him. Dear Parents, We have had a wonderful start to the year. I would like to thank all Parents, Students and Staff for the enthusiastic and positive way in which the year has begun. It is great to see so many students coming to school well presented and wearing their uniforms proudly. We also see lots of smiles, happy “Hello’s” and excellent use of manners which makes for a great day at school. Parent/Guardian and Teacher Learning Conferences The 2014 Learning conferences for Grades Prep – 6 will be held on Monday 3rd March and Wed 5th March. A letter was sent home to all families last week with details and information about how to make your appointments on-line through our parent portal. These interviews are a very important opportunity for parents and teachers to discuss how students have settled in to the year and also to set goals for further learning. We encourage all parents and guardians to take advantage of this opportunity and for all students to be present at these meetings. Planning Days and Early Numeracy Interviews Our teachers have undertaken planning days in the past weeks. These days are an invaluable opportunity for our teaching teams to come together to plan comprehensive learning programs for our students. Much of this collaborative planning leads to collaborative teaching and reporting opportunities throughout the year, where grade groups work together as a whole on particular learning tasks. More often now, you will also notice that some or all members of a particular grade team will assess and report on your child’s progress. Much of this can be seen through the Continuous On-line Reporting process that we have established. Over the coming weeks, Early Numeracy Interviews will also be conducted for all of our Grade 1 and Grade 4 students and flagged students in Gr 5 and 6. Again, this is a wonderful opportunity for teachers to gather data about student understanding in numeracy, thus enabling them to plan teaching and learning programs that suit the needs of individual students. Volunteering and Police Checks We highly value the support provided by our parents when volunteering their time to help us out at school, whether it be through classroom help, carnival assistance or coaching/managing many of our sporting teams. In order for parent/ grandparents and guardians to help us here at school, all volunteers must have a valid Police Check in place, or to have applied for this to be completed. Our College office will arrange for this to be completed, and we would ask that any parents who are generously offering to volunteer their time for the school, please provide the appropriate evidence that a Police Check has been completed or is in the process of. Thank you for your support. Primary Swimming Carnival What an excellent day we had for our Primary Swimming Carnival last Thursday. Participation was at an all-time high, behaviour was excellent and House Spirit outstanding. We know that everyone had a wonderful time and after smooth running, we even had some extra free time in the pool and on the waterslide. Thank you to all of our parents and volunteers for your help as we could not do this without your time and effort. A special thank you to Mr Guinane who gave so much time and energy in organising the carnival for the first time. A great way to start the year. We will report on the Early Childhood Carnival, held on Thursday 27 th Feb, in the next newsletter. Kindergarten News Last Wednesday evening, the Kindergarten and Prep teachers opened their classrooms for a study tour of members of ECET South, an organisation of early childhood educators. The first of three tours of Hobart kindergartens and early childhood centres, the intention of the study tours is to create a dialogue about best practice in early childhood education and how to facilitate learning through a rich and rigorous play curriculum. The organisation of the physical environment is key to motivating and engaging learners.

PRIMARY NEWS The way the learning space is set up at the commencement of each year should invite exploration by providing open ended learning experiences which link to all curriculum areas. The inclusion of spaces for creative and dramatic play, places for children to work alone or work with others, quiet spaces, sensory and interest areas are all important elements to be considered when creating learning spaces. We received positive feedback about the way we have set up the classrooms to include as many opportunities for exploration as possible and how we have incorporated elements of the natural environment thereby making links between inside and outside learning. This year there will be regular updates in the newsletter as we continue to follow best practice in the early years with the implementation of play pedagogy. Values Education/Spiritual Formation/School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (Repeat Information) Again this year we will be following an increasingly important values education and spiritual formation program where we will focus upon a value or virtue each fortnight. You will note this fortnight’s value at the top of this section and further values and their appropriate scripture reading will appear each fortnight in the newsletter. We are also fully implementing the C.A.R.E. expectations of the College as a part of the School-wide Positive Behaviour Support Program. C.A.R.E. represents the focus guiding elements of Cooperation, Achievement, Respect and Empathy, which our school community refers to in an effort to build positive behaviours. These elements have now also been attached to the House Charisms of Delany (St Vincent De Paul), Julian (CARITAS), Xavier (L’Arche) and Quinlan (Josephite Missions). We are also incorporating Values Education and the C.A.R.E. expectations into the Buddy program. Buddies will be conducted on Friday mornings on a fortnightly basis. As these expectations and charisms are clearly outlined in the school diary and also on display within every classroom, it would be wonderful if parents could talk about the value in focus with your children, to build understanding and hopefully adoption of that value in our daily lives. Many thanks to Mr Paul Crennan, Miss Nicole De Gouveia (RECs), Mr Rom Fabrizio and Mrs Sue Burrows for their continued input and preparation of this program. Electronic Attendance Register/ Leaving School Early (Repeat Information) Sacred Heart College operates an Electronic Attendance Register which requires all teachers to submit student attendance by 9:15am each day. If students have an unexplained absence, parents will receive an automatic SMS message stating that their child is not at school. Should appointments or other delays result in children arriving at school after 9:15am, it will be necessary for their parent or guardian to sign in at the main office, before proceeding to their classroom. Likewise, if a student is picked up from school before the end of the school day, parents must sign them out at the Primary office before leaving. We look forward to parental support in these important issues as we endeavour to provide the utmost duty of care to all of our students. More information regarding these procedures will be provided by class teachers at Parent Information sessions. Before and After School Supervision Arrangements (Repeat Information) All students arriving at school prior to 8:30 am are reminded that they must wait in the quadrangle area outside the Primary office, unless they are accompanied by their own parent or guardian. A supervising Teacher is on duty from 8:20am and students will be allowed to go to their classrooms if their class teacher is in the room at this time. Similarly, this applies to those students who must wait for buses or siblings in the secondary school at the end of the school day. All waiting students must do so in the quadrangle area, and as safety of students in the busy streets around the school at the end of the day is our primary concern, we would kindly encourage all parents not to ask children to wait in Pedder or Clare Streets. The Duty Teacher will ask students waiting in these areas to move to the quadrangle. A Duty Teacher will also collect those waiting for buses and accompany and wait with them at the bus stop. The lower grassed and playground areas and footpaths are out of bounds after school to those students not individually supervised by their parents or nominated guardian adult. If students are still in the quadrangle area by 3:20pm, they will be asked to continue waiting for their parents/guardians in the main Administration Office. Again, ensuring the correct supervision and safety of our students before and after school is vitally important to us, and we would ask for generous parental support with this issue.

PRIMARY NEWS Clean Up Schools Day As a precursor to "Clean Up Australia Day" on Sunday 2nd March, the Primary campus will be participating in Clean Up Schools Day on Friday 28th February. This activity will be conducted through our first BUDDIES session for the year and will begin with a focus lesson on the C.A.R.E. expectation of Respect. In learning about how to Respect the Environment, the students will then follow this up with a Julian House focus by having a clean-up around our school. Hopefully we’ll see lots of yellow gloves and bags around the playground and classrooms as students go to specific areas and collect any rubbish in the school grounds. Many thanks to Mr Fabrizio for organising this activity and to our Grade 6 Buddy leaders on commencing our BUDDIES activities for the year in such a positive way. Sue Walker DEPUTY PRINCIPAL—PRIMARY

MUSIC NEWS BAND and STRINGS PROGRAM Welcome to the Instrumental Music Programme for 2014. The year has got off to a very smooth start in the Instrumental Programme (IP). Every student in grades 5 -7 receives tuition on a wind, brass or string instrument in their weekly music lesson from our excellent music tutors, Rebekah Grice (strings), Robyn Males (brass), and Jamie Allen, Cathy Allen and Derek Grice (wind) who are part of the music team. Grade 5 Music Grade 5 students have commenced the first of 3 term rotations learning to play a brass, woodwind and string instrument this year. Their enthusiasm is great to see and with support from their fabulous parents and caregivers we know this will continue. Grade 6 Music Grades 6 students have continued with tuition on the instrument they commenced in term 4 last year while still in grade 5. They will specialise in that instrument in grade 6 and continue in grade 7 to a high level of proficiency. In 2014 students each have their own tutor book. Gone are the sheets and display folders of the past! Grade 7 Music Music in Grade 7 has got off to a flyer with 120 students playing a band or stringed instrument. Students who attended Sacred Heart Primary School in 2013, and some new students who played an instrument at their primary school, are continuing from where they left off at the end of 2013 already sounding impressive in their class groups. Students who are new to SHC in 2014 are undergoing aptitude testing on flute, clarinet, trumpet and trombone, to find the instrument to which they are best suited. Any student who plays a band (i.e. wind, brass or percussion) or string instrument (i.e. violin or cello) is invited to contact Ms Coen (primary music room) for further information. Instrument Agreement All parents and caregivers of grade 5, 6, & 7 students will receive a letter in the mail this week containing information and the Instrumental Programme Agreement setting out the terms for using an instrument belonging to SHC (not applicable to students who have their own instrument) . Please sign the Agreement and return it immediately to Ms Carmelita Coen, co-ordinator of the Instrumental Programme. Practising and Borrowing of Instruments Instrument practice at home is music homework. All Grade 5s, 6s and 7s are expected to practise their instrument at home in order to meet their homework requirements. Instruments are shared among the grades so must be borrowed and returned on the days designated for each grade. Please refer to the schedule below for borrowing and returning instruments: GRADE

FUNDRAISING NEWS Hello everyone, We know you're counting down the days to the school fair, but just in case it's not already in your diary then please make a note that it's on Sunday 23rd of November. For the benefit of new parents the school fair is held every second year, and will be the major fund-raising activity this year. A small group of parents and friends met last night for the first time to start making arrangements. There will be plenty of bulletins throughout the year, however at this early stage we would like to call on - ideas (big and little!) for stalls, activities, etc - early takers to organise a particular stall (get in early before all the good ones go!) - any special talents out there that might be shared - anyone who has access to a refrigerated van (to keep drinks cool on the day) If you would like to help organise any aspect of the fair then you are more than welcome to join us at the next meeting at 6.30pm on Wednesday 26th March. Meetings are held in the secondary staff room in the Quinlan building on the secondary campus. The P&F banner will be outside the door in case you're lost. Please email Jo Fitzpatrick at [email protected] with any thoughts you may have. Entertainment Books We will be running with the Entertainment Books as a fundraising endeavour again this year having raised approximately $2400 last year! Books will be distributed to primary parents on Monday 14th April (2 days after launch date). This year there is not only the book but a digital version!

Project Compassion Sacred Heart College will be supporting the work of Caritas Australia through their yearly Project Compassion fundraising campaign. During the six weeks of Lent people are encouraged to help raise money, promote justice and uphold the dignity of others through their actions. Caritas Australia is an international aid and development agency that began in 1964. It is part of an international confederation of 165 Catholic relief, development and social service organisations that operate throughout the world. As well as providing emergency relief and aid to those in critical need, Caritas Australia also supports over 170 long-term projects throughout Australia, Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Pacific and the Middle East. The theme of this year’s fundraising campaign carries Jesus’ commitment for all for a life of abundance: ‘I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full.’ In 2013 Caritas Australia raised $11 million to benefit the world’s poorest. Last year Sacred Heart College contributed $3800 to this total. This year our students will be involved in various fundraising and awareness campaigns. We urge all members of our College community to support their endeavours. Each family will receive a Project Compassion Box. Please consider giving generously during this Lenten season to this worthwhile cause.
