Dear Friends: MASS ATTENDANCE – OCTOBER COUNT: I want to thank Peter Ferket and the ushers for conducting this census of Mass attendance. We submitted these tallies to the diocese and thought you would like to see them. HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH PROGRAM: Please come and be part of the newly formed Life Teen Group. Elizabeth Queen, our new Youth Minister, meets with this group of high school students at 5pm on Sundays. This group is for all students English and Hispanic. Retreats, a Ski Trip and the Summer Mission Trip will all be with this group. Come and bring your friends. Parents, please encourage your high school students to participate. Thank you. VOCATION PROGRAM PLANNED: I am planning an afternoon Vocation Program and supper with the priests. It will be next Sunday afternoon at 4pm at the rectory. It will be on the Passionist Community, religious life and priesthood, with a video and discussion. Any men interested, please contact me [email protected] NOVEMBER FEAST DAYS OF PASSIONIST SAINTS: I try to keep you informed of our Passionist Saints and Blesseds each month. There are 3 Passionists with feasts this month: Bl. Pio Campidelli, Bl. Eugene Bossilkov and Bl. Grimoaldo Santamaria. Nov. 3 is the feast of Bl. Pio. He was a young Passionist seminarian, an imitator of St. Gabriel. Born in 1868, he died at 21 offering his life for the conversion of sinners in his region of Italy. He is held in great veneration in that area. Nov. 18 is the feast of another young seminarian, Bl. Grimoaldo 1883-1902. Again, he became holy through exceptional kindness and fidelity in everything. His shrine is at our monastery in Ceccano, Italy. After his death, his mother moved to Rochester, NY. One of his grandnieces is a friend of mine. Many healings are attributed to his intercession. Lastly, Bl. Eugene Bossilkov, a Passionist Bishop who was martyred in 1952, has his feast day on Oct. 13th. He was very intelligent and pastoral. He had a degree in theology and was Pastor in Bulgaria. Pope Pius XII named him Bishop there. He spoke out strongly in defense of the Catholic Church during the Communist persecutions. He served his people generously and heroically. I’ve spoken with his relatives and two priests he ordained. He was deeply loved. The communists arrested, imprisoned and tortured him. He was executed on Nov. 11, 1952. St. John Paul II beatified him in 1998, declaring him “the Bulgarian Church’s radiant glory and a fearless witness to the Cross of Christ.” Let us walk in their footsteps. SOME REFLECTIONS ON OUR PILGRIMAGE: We returned from Rome on Oct. 22nd. The pilgrimage to Rome "In the Footsteps of St. Paul of the Cross" with 45 parishoners (Raleigh, Clayton and Greenville) to Orbetello, Monte Argentario, Lucca, Tarquinia, Vetralla, Gran Sasso and Rome was a great success. We stayed in two hotels, 3 nights in Orbetello and then 5 nights Rome. On Wednesday, we attended the Papal Audience and received Pope Francis’ blessing. Fr. Joachim Rego, Superior General of the Passionists, welcomed us to Sts. John and Paul for the Feast of St. Paul of the Cross. The 3 priests leading the pilgrimage concelebrated at the community Mass. There were about 120 Passionists concelebrating with lay associates and pilgrims filling the basilica. Then the General invited us to supper with the community in the gardens. We encountered wonderful hospitality everywhere. The Passionist Nuns in Tarquinia, where we had a prayer service, opened their gates and invited the whole group of 45 into their beautiful gardens. This is the convent Paul of the Cross founded. The Nuns sang for us. There were a number of young sisters there. On Monte Argentario, Fr. Jose Orbegozo welcomed us with a special appetizers and wines in the gardens and dinner in the original refectory of St. Paul of the Cross. Catholic Travel from California did a magnificent job. They sent two camera men along and made a video for promotion to show what can be done. We saw all the traditional sights of Rome – the Basilicas, churches of the Martyrs, fountains and piazzas. We toured through the magnificent countryside of Tuscany and the mountains of the Abruzzo area to the great shrine of St. Gabriel. It was a special blessing to be with our Community. We had prayer and a beautiful Mass each day. The group bonded quite well and we had a wonderful farewell dinner the night before our departure with music, food and dancing. A strong sense of community and spirituality pervaded everything. In Christ,

33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

November 13, 2016

First Reading Mal 3:19-20a Lo, the day is coming, blazing like an oven, when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire, leaving them neither root nor branch, says the LORD of hosts. But for you who fear my name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays. -The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God. Responsorial Psalm

and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name. It will lead to your giving testimony. Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand, for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” -The Gospel of the Lord. R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

New Mass Setting R. The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice. Second Reading 2 2 Thes 3:7-12 Brothers and sisters: You know how one must imitate us. For we did not act in a disorderly way among you, nor did we eat food received free from anyone. On the contrary, in toil and drudgery, night and day we worked, so as not to burden any of you. Not that we do not have the right. Rather, we wanted to present ourselves as a model for you, so that you might imitate us. In fact, when we were with you, we instructed you that if anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat. We hear that some are conducting themselves among you in a disorderly way, by not keeping busy but minding the business of others. Such people we instruct and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to work quietly and to eat their own food. -The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God. Alleluia R. Alleluia, alleluia! Stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. R. Alleluia, alleluia! Gospel Lk 21:5-19 While some people were speaking about how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings, Jesus said, “All that you see here--the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.” Then they asked him,“Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?” He answered, “See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and ‘The time has come.’ Do not follow them! When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end.” Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky. “Before all this happens, however, they will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons,

--2 Thessalonians 3: 9

In this passage, Paul is instructing the early Church, by the example of his own method of ministry, to be a model for others. He asks them (and us) to live in harmony and strive not to be a burden on others. Paul’s message is simple: stay focused on the work the Lord has given you to do. After the contentious election that we have had, these are good words to help us remember our way of life as followers of Jesus.

CONGREGATIONS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE Denis Keating

There was a chant that we used to say as kids, “Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” This is not true, names can hurt someone. If we are to live in harmony and work together then we must also master our use of language.

CROP HUNGER WALK Mary Catherine Hinds

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington, has written an essay called, “Civil Discourse: Speaking Truth in Love.” In it, he states, “The preacher's pulpit, the politician's podium and the print and electronic media all bear some responsibility to encourage a far more civil, responsible and respectful approach to national debate and the discussion of issues in our country today. . .Increasingly, there is a tendency to disparage the name and reputation, the character and life, of a person because he or she holds a different position. The identifying of some people as "bigots" and "hate mongers" simply because they hold a position contrary to another's has unfortunately become all too commonplace today. . .The defaming words speak more about political posturing than about reasoned discourse. Why is it so important that we respect both our constitutional right to free speech and our moral obligation that we not bear false witness against another? A profoundly basic reason is that we do not live alone. While each of us can claim a unique identity, we are, nonetheless, called to live out our lives in relationship with others -- in some form of community. . .We are by nature social and tend to come together so that in the various communities of which we are a part, we can experience full human development. . . What does this have to do with toning down our rhetoric? Everything! No community, human or divine, political or religious, can exist without trust. . .To tamper with the truth or, worse yet, to pervert it, is to undermine the foundations of human community and to begin to cut the threads that weave us into a coherent human family.” http://www.civilizeit.us/

ENSURE the WELL-BEING of HAITIANS AFFECTED by HURRICANE MATTHEW Hurricane Matthew devastated Haiti on October 4, 2016, killing hundreds and leaving 1.4 million people in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. On November 1, Bishop Eusebio Elizondo, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Migration joined Catholic partners at Catholic Charities USA, the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, and Catholic Relief Services in a letter to the Department of Homeland Security and the Dept. of State sharing concerns regarding the care and treatment of Haitians. Bishop Elizondo and partners noted: ”We are concerned about DHS’ recent immigration policies which separate and detain Haitian family members. These policies are particularly inhumane in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew when our government should be showing Haitians compassion and support.” Please join in the petition to support Haitians during this time of crisis. Corporal Works of Mercy

What are the Works of Mercy? There are seven Corporal Works of Mercy which address the material and physical needs of others. Each month, we will be highlighting a corporal work of mercy that is happening at Sacred Heart and how you can participate as part of the Year of Mercy celebration. November’s Work of Mercy is “Bury the Dead.” Funerals provide the opportunity to grieve and show others support during difficult times. Through our prayers and actions, we show respect for life, which is always a gift from God, and comfort those who mourn. (Source: www.uscbb.org.)

How can you honor those who have died and support families who are grieving? --The month of November is dedicated to all Holy Souls. At this time of year, we especially offer prayers for the souls of the departed. In this way, we connect the Body of Christ which transcends time and space thus uniting the faithful in heaven, on earth and in Purgatory as one entity. A common practice is to request a Mass intention for a family member who has passed away. Please contact the parish office for more information about scheduling a Mass intention. --Just as we pray for the souls of the departed, we must comfort those who grieve their loss so that they may “bury” their emotional pain. This act of mercy takes time and patience as we walk beside those in the grieving process which extends well beyond a funeral. Sending a card or preparing a meal for someone who has recently lost a loved one are ways that we can show kindness and care. --Visit the cemetery and pray for those who have died so that they are not forgotten. You can also donate or volunteer with an organization such as Wreaths Across America. Each December this organization coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery and over 1,000 locations across the country in order to honor and remember veterans. --As it is the one certainty of life, the Church recommends that you spend time planning your own funeral Mass. You can contact the parish office for information regarding the guidelines for a Catholic funeral Mass.

XXXIII Domingo Ordinario
