From Our Rector

Dear Friends: PRIESTS ON RETREAT THIS WEEK: Bishop Burbidge and over 120 of the priests working in the Raleigh Diocese were on retreat this past week. We stayed at the Blockade Runner in Wrightsville Beach Monday through Friday. A Retreat Master is brought in to give talks. We use St. Therese Church two doors down for prayer services, Masses, Benediction and Adoration. The conferences are given in a large room at the hotel. On Thursday night we have a festive meal celebrating priests who have 25, 50 and 60 year anniversaries. It is quite nice and you have amazing quiet and solitude for prayer and reflection. There is also great fraternity among the priests, Diocesan and Religious, together. MEETING WITH BISHOP ON NEW CATHEDRAL: On Thursday Sept. 15th, we had a helpful meeting with Bishop Burbidge and key members of his staff. I had told him there were a number of issues our parish is ask‐ ing about the transfer to the new cathedral. He suggested bringing some people to the Catholic Center for a meeting. I asked some to attend: Matt Healey (Chair of the Parish Council), Genaro Estrada (V. Chair of the P.C.), Marjorie Sack‐York (PC Member on the Unify the Parish Committee), Matt Foote (Maintenance), Cecile Grant (Pastor’s Assistant), Trish Kessler (Altar Guild President), Bill Findlay (Head Sacristan) and Fr. Edward. The meeting was very encouraging; here’s a summation: Maintenance: Diocese is aware of need for additional personnel to maintain the new cathedral and that the cost of running such an operation will have to be shared. Also, aware that around‐the‐clock security will have to be put in place once the Cathedral is finished and in use. Finances: Diocese has a committee in place to study and project future offertory. A reserve has been put aside by the Diocese to handle any deficit in the early years of the new Cathedral. Wed‐ dings: May start scheduling weddings for September 2017. Realize that a coordinator from the Diocese is needed to handle dates of events specifically for the Diocese. Mass Schedule: Weekend Mass schedule is being worked on by the current Parish Council members. The Diocese noted that a 3:00p weekend Mass will be scheduled from time to time for the Bishop to celebrate special events, either on a Saturday or Sunday. This will affect the afternoon Hispanic Sunday schedule as well as weddings on Saturday. Diocese will send us a schedule soon of the special Masses that are planned through the year. Discussions will continue. CONFIRMATION: As I mentioned at Masses last week, the Confirmation of our 76 young people on Sept. 15th could not have gone better. Thanks to Stacie Miller, the catechists, the Cathedral School teachers, the parents and all those helping in Faith Formation. The Bishop commented on how well prepared our stu‐ dents were and how unified the parish seemed English and Spanish speaking together and having Faith For‐ mation together. I told him we are unified and it’s only getting better. Thank you. YOUTH MINISTER: The Kick Off for our High School Youth Program is TODAY at 5:00p. Our new Youth Minister, Elizabeth Queen, has been working hard and planning for a great year. She will have my full support. I look forward to an excellent program and Mission Trip. ST. TERESA OF CALCUTTA CANONIZATION: The whole world was there. It was a magnificent spiritual experience I shared with Fr. Peter Grace. We took some vacation afterwards and were able to tweak a lot of details for the up‐coming pilgrimage Oct. 13‐22: “Jubilee Year of Mercy Pilgrimage to Rome in the Footsteps of St. Paul of the Cross.” PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING: This coming Monday night at 6:30p, the Council is working for a smooth transition to our Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral. There is a committee set up for parish unity. They will be discussing Mass times this week.

Gratefully in Christ,

First Reading Am 6:1a, 4‐7 Thus says the LORD the God of hosts: Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves from the stall! Improvising to the music of the harp, like David, they devise their own accompani‐ ment. They drink wine from bowls and anoint themselves with the best oils; yet they are not made ill by the collapse of Joseph! Therefore, now they shall be the first to go into exile, and their wanton revelry shall be done away with. -The Word of the Lord.

3

He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.' But Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.’ He said, ‘Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ Then Abraham said, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead.’” -The Gospel of the Lord. R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

R. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 147 R. Praise the Lord, my soul! O Sacred Heart of Jesus, I have asked you for many favors but I plead for this one. Take it and place it in Your open broken heart, and when the Eternal Father sees it covered in the mantle of your most Precious Blood, He cannot refuse it for then it is Your prayer and not mine. Amen.

Second Reading 1 Tm 6:11‐16 But you, man of God, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses. I charge you before God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate for the noble confession, to keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ that the blessed and only ruler will make manifest at the proper time, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, and whom no human being has seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal power. Amen. -The Word of the Lord.

R. Thanks be to God.

Alleluia R. Alleluia, alleluia! Though our Lord Jesus Christ was rich, he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. R. Alleluia, alleluia! Gospel Lk 16:19‐31 Jesus said to the Pharisees: “There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering torment in these flames.' Abraham replied, ‘My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.’

ST. VINCENT STRAMBI, C.P. Feastday – Sept. 24th: Born in Civitavecchia, Italy in 1745. He made a retreat in preparation for his ordination as a diocesan priest at the Passionist monastery in Vetralla and met St. Paul of the Cross. Shortly after ordination, he sought admission to our community. Being an only child, his father gave tremendous opposition but eventually St. Paul received the young Fr. Vincent into the Passionists. He was an outstanding preacher and traveled all through Italy endeavoring to promote the Christian life through his preaching of the Passion. He was an excellent spiritual di‐ rector and author and taught young Passionists preaching. He is the first biographer of St. Paul of the Cross. He wrote the three volume biography on his knees because of his great reverence for our Founder. He held numerous leadership positions in our community. In 1801, Pope Pius VII called him to be Bishop of Macerata and Tolentino. He was a zealous shepherd and reformed his diocese. In the political upheavals of the time, he refused to take an oath of loyalty to Napoleon and remained loyal to the Pope. He was banished from his diocese for 6 years. After Waterloo, he returned from exile and continued to show extraordinary charity especially to the poor. Pope Leo XII called him to Rome as his advisor in 1823. The Pope took seriously ill and Bishop Vincent offered his life to God instead. The Pope recovered and Vincent died shortly afterwards on Janu‐ ary 1, 1824. Pope Pius XII declared Bishop Vincent Mary Strambi a saint in 1950. His body is ven‐ erated in the church of St. Philip in Macerata.

JUSTICE BULLETIN BOARD Woe to the complacent in Zion! ...stretched comfortably on their couches. -Amos 6: 1, 4

O, oh! Amos’ listeners are in trouble now! This is the third and last “Woe!” statement in a series of three speeches. In this passage, Amos has only contempt for men and women who, at times, talk grandly of patriotism and religion yet remain blind to the misery of the poor. Both Amos’ speech and Luke’s parable of the rich man and Lazarus address the issues of just access to resources and active concern for the needy. The very sharp point of the stories is the sin of uncaring complacency that works against justice. This sin is apparent throughout all economic levels, not just the wealthy. It is so easy to be a couch potato and think that pov‐ erty is someone else’s issue. Pope Francis takes up this message and speaks about uncaring complacency in the following words: “Often we need only walk the streets of a city to see the contrast between people living on the street and the brilliant lights of the store windows. We have become so accus‐ tomed to these things that they no longer unsettle us” (1/24/14). “The coexistence of wealth and poverty is a scandal, it is a disgrace for humanity” (12/2/15). What examples of compla‐ cency do you see around you? In calling for more energetic action for justice motivated by mercy and compassion for the poor and marginalized of society, Pope Francis writes during this Year of Mercy, “It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty. And let us enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God’s mercy. Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. Let us rediscover these corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead” (Misericordiae Vultus, 4/11/15, no. 15). As of September 1st of this year, he has even added a new corporal work of mercy, the work of the care for our common home and advocacy for the environ‐ ment because everything is connected. Every community of faith is charged with finding ways to extend its resources to those in need. Here at Sacred Heart, you have only to go to our web page and click on “Get Involved,” then go to, “Social Justice.” Turn your “Woe” into “Wow!” Barbara Molinari Quinby, MPS Coordinator of Social Justice Ministries

THE CHRISTIAN VIEW OF IMMIGRANTS AS PERSONS “On this continent … thousands of persons are led to travel north in search of a better life for themselves and for their loved ones, in search of greater opportunities. Is this not what we want for our own children? We must not be taken aback by their numbers, but rather view them as persons, seeing their faces, and listening to their stories, trying to respond as best we can to their situation. To respond in a way which is always humane, just and fraternal.” … Pope Francis, Address to the U.S. Congress

XXVI Domingo Ordinario

Si
