2008-09 OUTLOOK

2008-09 PROVIDENCE COLLEGE HOCKEY 2008-09 OUTLOOK With the return of 22 players from last season’s team and the addition of eight freshmen, the 2008-09 Providence College men’s hockey team, guided by fourth-year coach Tim Army, will look to make a run at the Hockey East title and reach the NCAA Tournament. In all, the Friars have a group of 30 players who possess speed and skill, and have the potential to be among the top teams in one of the toughest conferences in the nation. Last season, the Friars had impressive performances and were ranked as high as No. 11 in the national polls. PC’s strong performances included wins against defending national champion Michigan State and a pair of victories at eighth-ranked Boston College, which captured the national title. Late in the season, the Friars were in a strong position to gain one of the top four spots in Hockey East, which would translate into home-ice advantage in the league quarterfinals. Injuries caught up to the Friars as they finished fifth in the league standings. However, the Friars are inching closer to a breakthrough season. The Friars have a strong group of experienced veterans and welcome a deep freshman class, which Friar fans hope adds to a Hockey East title. The Forwards (Returning 15; Lost 1; Newcomers 4) Despite the loss of Jon Rheault, who led the Friars in scoring in each of the last three seasons, the Friars return 15 forwards from the 2007-08 campaign. The returning forwards, who combined for 66 goals last season, will look to improve upon their production from the season before. The Friars finished last season ranked sixth in Hockey East with 91 goals, sixth with 25 power-play goals and led the league with nine short-handed tallies. Senior Pierce Norton (South Boston, Mass.) leads the list of returning forwards for PC as he had a career year in 2007-08 and will look to continue that trend this season. Norton ranked second on the team with 14 goals and added 10 assists for 24 points. Half of his 14 goals came on the power-play as he finished tied for fourth in the league with seven tallies on the man advantage. Junior John Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.), who will serve as one of the co-captains in 2008-09, is poised for a breakthrough season. Last season, Cavanagh, who is one of craftiest players on the team, recorded 18 points on five goals and 13 assists in 32 games. He finished the season third in assists on the team and fifth in total points. Cavanagh played on the first power play unit and eight of his points (two goals, six assists) came on the man advantage.

Senior co-captain Kyle Laughlin Senior Kyle Laughlin (Gambrills, Md.) will also serve as co-captain for the second consecutive season. In addition to providing strong leadership last season, Laughlin finished with a career-high 17 points (seven goals and 10 assists), which was the sixth highest point total on the team. Senior Nick Mazzolini (Anchorage, Alaska) and junior Greg Collins (Hingham, Mass.) also will add to the scoring this season. Mazzolini tallied 16 points on seven goals and nine assists last season and was a major contributor on the power play. Two of his seven goals came on the penalty kill, which tied for second in Hockey East in short-handed goals. Collins finished his sophomore season with 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) last season, including two game winners in Hockey East contests. He also saw action on the power play and the penalty kill as he scored one goal in each situation last season. Senior John Mori (Westport, Conn.) and junior Chris Eppich (Surrey, B.C.) will add more depth to the Friars. Mori battled back from injuries during his freshman and sophomore years to play in 27 games as a junior, which was more than his first two seasons combined. A speedy wing, he chipped in two goals and three assists last season. Eppich played in 14 games last season and registered one assist. Junior Matt Tommasiello (Cranston, R.I.) did not see action in 2007-08 but is poised to contribute in 2008-09. Sophomore Paul Golden (Milton, Mass.) did not see any action last season, but continues to show progress and is expected to contribute this season. Six current sophomores provided strong contributions to the team last season and gained valuable experience. Ian O’Connor (Londonderry, N.H.), Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.), Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.), Jordan Kremyr (Cloverdale, B.C.), Ben Farrer (Calgary, Alberta) and Austin Mayer (Providence, R.I.) all saw significant ice time last season and played a key role on the Friar squad. O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) led all freshmen with 11 points on five goals and six assists as he played in all 36 games last year. The highlight of his season came on February 29 when he scored the game-winner at Kelley Rink to knock off No. 9 Boston College. O’Connor also earned the team’s Rev. Herman Schneider Most Valuable Freshman Award. MacKinnon, who was one of the team’s top face-off players and penalty killers, tallied 10 points on five goals and five assists. He recorded the first two goals of his career to seal an 8-0 win over Brown in the Mayor’s Cup.

Junior co-captain John Cavanagh 6

2008-09 OUTLOOK The Defensemen (Returning 5; Lost 3; Newcomers 3) Despite losing three defensemen from last season’s team, including Cody Wild, who signed a professional contract, the team will have a solid crew of blue liners. In addition to helping keep the puck away from the net, PC defensemen are expected to be aggressive on the opposite end and also provide a scoring punch to complement the forwards. Last season, the PC defensemen accounted for 17 goals, with 13 of those goals coming from players who will be returning for the 2008-09 season. Senior Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.), who was full strength as a junior after dealing with an injury during his sophomore campaign, finished as the second leading scorer on the team (first among defensemen). He enjoyed a career year, posting nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points. He also was tops on the team with a plus/minus rating of +10. The 2008 All-Hockey East Second Team and All-New England honoree will be looked upon to continue to provide scoring and more leadership as he was named assistant captain for the 2008-09 season. Junior Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) also will be looked upon for more leadership as he also was named as an assistant captain. Fayne, who has received the team’s Ron Wilson Best Defensive Player of the Year Award for two consecutive years, played in all 36 games and recorded two goals and four assists for six points. Sophomore Joe Lavin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) emerged as one of the most consistent defensemen on the team last season. He played in all 36 games and registered eight assists, including two against sixth-ranked New Hampshire on November 17. Sophomore Eric Baier (North Kingstown, R.I.) also provided a significant contribution as a freshman last season. Baier played in 33 games, tallying one goal and four assists. Junior David Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.) will look for a breakthrough season after playing in 13 contests in 200708. The PC defense will add reinforcements in the form of freshmen Bryce Aneloski (Pekin, Ill.), David Brown (Centennial, Colo.), and Danny New (White Plains, N.Y.), who will bring depth, size and speed to the Friar blue line.

Senior Pierce Norton Germain led all freshmen with nine assists and finished with a total of 10 points while playing in all 36 games. He shared the team’s Thomas Eccleston, Jr. Unsung Hero Award. Kremyr came on strong towards the latter part of his first season at PC and finished with four points on three goals and one assist. In the second meeting against Boston College, Kremyr went into Kelley Rink and scored two goals to catapult PC to victory. For his effort, he was named Hockey East Rookie of the Week. Farrer and Mayer shared similar fates last season as they each had strong performances through the halfway point of the season, but ultimately suffered season-ending injuries. Farrer scored one goal and recorded three assists in 25 games. His lone goal was a game-winner versus No. 11 Northeastern on January 26. Mayer also recorded three assists in 16 games. He assisted on the game-winner against Vermont on December 1 and the assist also was his first career point. The Friars also welcome four freshman forwards to the 2008-09 squad. Andrew Balysky (Randolph, N.J.), Matthew Bergland (Faribault, Minn.), Robert Maloney (Eagan, Minn.), and Shawn Tingley (North Kingstown, R.I.) will add depth, speed and grit to the team and could provide an immediate impact to the Friars. Balysky was a three-sport athlete at the Taft School and captained the hockey team as a senior. He totaled 20 points (seven goals, 13 assists) in 23 games and was named to the Founders League All-Star Team. Bergland played at Benilde-St. Margaret’s, where in two years he tallied 108 points. He helped his team to a third place finish in the state hockey championship tournament while also earning All-State and All-Tournament accolades. Maloney along with Bergland played in the Minnesota State High School League. Maloney was an All-Conference player at Eastview High School where he captained his team during his junior and senior years. In his four years, he tallied 126 points on 49 goals and 77 assists. Among his other honors were being named conference MVP, Best Offensive Player, and Rookie of the Year. Tingley played for the South Shore Kings of the EJHL. He recorded 104 points (32 goals, 72 assists) in 88 games while playing in the EJHL. As a senior at LaSalle High School in Rhode Island, he recorded 42 points (21 goals, 21 assists) and was the top scorer in the state.

With the loss of Tyler Sims, who finished his career at PC by setting numerous school records, the Friars will look to junior Ryan Simpson (Bow, N.H.), senior Chris Mannix (Hubbardston, Mass.) and freshman Justin Gates (Cranston, R.I.). Simpson, who suffered through three injuries during the early stages of his freshman season to the latter half of his sophomore season, appeared in four games in 2007-08. He made one start last season and will be expected to make his mark now that he is healthy. Mannix appeared in four games last season and made three starts. He posted a 1-1-1 record with a 2.65 goals against average and a .911 save percentage. After a weekend series against Massachusetts in late October, Mannix was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week. Gates played for the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs of the EJHL, where he posted a 13-4-1 record and a 2.27 GAA last season and helped the Junior Monarchs to the Tier III Jr. A National Championship. He also played at Lawrence Academy where he was a captain and an All-ISL selection as well as a NEPSIHA Division 1 All-Star.
