Last weekend, the Americans beat Alaska Anchorage (4-3) and lost to Alaska Fairbanks (4-0). • U-M has hosted an exhibition game vs. the U.S. NTDP in each of the last eight seasons, earning an 8-0-0 record. Three of the last four games have been determined by one goal. • 21 U.S. NTDP alumni have gone on to skate for the University of Michigan. There are six U.S. NTDP alumni on Michigan’s roster in 2008-09 -- freshmen Robbie Czarnik and David Wohlberg, sophomore Matt Rust, junior Chris Summers and seniors Danny Fardig and Mark Mitera. about waterloo • The University of Waterloo is located in Waterloo, Ontario, and competes in the Ontario University Athletics conference. • UWO has both of its exhibition games so far in 2008-09. Its regular season begins next weekend on Oct. 10. • UW is coached by Brian Bourque. • The Wolverines beat the Warriors in an exhibition tune-up for the 2006-07 season by a 10-2 count. The squads also met in October of 1996 at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. U-M won 8-2 in a game that counted for the regular season. • Michigan has played a Canadian university in its exhibition season for each of the past 10 seasons. Prior to the 1998-99 campaign, games against Canadian schools counted towards regular season records. • Michigan is 10-0-0 in exhibition contests against Canadian schools. In the Polls • Michigan is ranked 2nd in the preseason USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. U-M was 2nd in the final USA Today poll of 2007-08. • Michigan was picked to finish first in the CCHA by the league’s media and second by the coaches at CCHA media day on Sept. 30. Notre Dame was picked first by the coaches and second by the media. • The Wolverines have finished either first or second in the CCHA in 17 out of the last 18 seasons; U-M was third in 2005-06. The last time U-M finished outside of the top three in the league was in the 1989-90 campaign. SEASON OPENERS • The Wolverines are 18-3-3 in season openers under Coach Berenson. • Berenson is 20-1-3 in home openers. The lone loss came at the start of the 1987-88 season. • U-M began last season 1-1 at the Ice Breaker Invitational in St. Paul, Minn. Michigan knocked off Boston College in overtime (4-3) before losing a close game to Minnesota (4-3). • After splitting the opening weekend in 200708, the Wolverines won 12 straight games -- tied for fourth-longest win streak in school hisory -- before finally losing on Nov. 30. • Over the last three seasons, U-M is 5-1-0 in its opening weekend.

Roster Notes • Michigan has 26 players on its roster broken down into 15 forwards, eight defensemen and three goaltenders. Junior Chris Summers is listed as a defenseman and a forward. He will start the season as a forward. • By class: 6 seniors, 5 juniors, 10 sophomores, 5 freshmen. • Of the 15 forwards, eight are underclassmen, including two rookies, and seven are upperclassmen. • All six veterans on defense saw game action in 2007-08. There are two rookies. Captain Mark Mitera is U-M’s lone senior on the blue line. • The Wolverines return all three of their netminders from a season ago. • 16 players hail from the state of Michigan. British Columbia (2) and Ontario (2) are the only other territories with multiple Wolverines. California, Missouri, New York and Washington each have one representative. U-M also has one native of Sweden. • Carl Hagelin (Sweden) is U-M’s first European player since Anton Fedorov (Russia) played from 1992-94. Offense • Sophomore Aaron Palushaj is U-M’s top returning point-getter from a year ago. His 10-34-44 line was third-best on the team. He had a point in 29 of 43 games. His 34 helpers tied T.J. Hensick for the second-highest total ever recorded by a U-M freshman. Palushaj was a CCHA All-Rookie team honorable mention. • Senior Travis Turnbull is Michigan’s top returning goal scorer after potting a career-high 15 goals last season. Turnbull also set career highs for assists (12) and points (27) during his junior campaign. With a career line of 32-30-62, Turnbull is U-M’s active career leader for goals and points. • Besides Palushaj and Turnbull, four other Wolverines are back who posted at least 20 points in 2007-08: sophomore center Matt Rust (12-11-23), defenseman Mark Mitera (2-21-23), forward Carl Hagelin (11-11-22) and center Louie Caporusso (12-9-21). • Mitera posted career highs in goals (2), assists (21) and points (23) to spearhead the offensive effort from U-M’s blue line in 2007-08. He recorded more than half of his points during a careerbest seven-game point streak (1-12-13) from Feb. 23-March 22. • Sophomore defenseman Chad Langlais is another key offensive contributor from the Michigan blue-liner. He tallied 19 assists last year to tie for fourth on U-M’s freshman defenseman assists list. • Junior Chris Summers will start the season up front for the Maize and Blue. Of his 82 career games 13 have been spent at forward, where he has tallied six goals and three assists. • Michigan was second in the nation in scoring in 2007-08 with a 3.95 goals per game average; U-M has been among the top three in national scoring average in each of the past four seasons. • In 2007-08, U-M racked up 170 goals and 275 assists for 445 points. • The Wolverines lost 35.5% of their point output from last season as a result of the graduation of Kevin Porter (33-30-63) and Chad Kolarik (30-26-56) and the early departure of Max Pacioretty (15-2439). The trio made up U-M’s No. 1 line in 2007-08.

Power Play • U-M’s power play ranked 12th in the country in 2007-08, converting at a rate of 20.5% (47-229). The 47 power-play goals accounted for 27.6% of the 170 overall goals scored during the season. • The top two returning goal scorers on the power play are Louie Caporusso and Brandon Naurato, who had four in 2007-08. U-M lost 30 power-play goals from last year’s team with the departure of Kevin Porter (15), Max Pacioretty (9), and Chad Kolarik (6). • Two other top contributors on the power play include sophomore forward Aaron Palushaj (2-1921) and sophomore defenseman Chad Langlais, who had 11 assists. • Michigan permitted three shorthanded goals in 2007-08, one season after coughing up 12 shorties in 2006-07. Defense • U-M gave up a paltry 2.07 goals per game last year, which was fourth-best in the nation. That came on the heels of the 2006-07 season when U-M was 37th in team defense, allowing 3.15 goals per game. • Michigan held opponents to two or fewer goals in 30 of 43 games in 2007-08. U-M was 28-1-1. • U-M returns all seven defensemen who saw game action last season: Mark Mitera (43 games played), Chad Langlais (43), Steve Kampfer (42), Chris Summers (41), Tristin Llewellyn (35), Scooter Vaughan (33) and Eric Elmblad (3). Summers is expected to start the season as a forward, which could free up a spot for freshmen Brandon Burlon or Greg Pateryn. • Mitera led all Maize and Blue defensemen with a +30 rating a year ago. He finished 24 games with a positive rating. Kampfer and Summers were next in line at +27 each. • Last year, Billy Sauer ranked 11th in save percentage (.924) and fifth in goals against average (1.95). With a record of 30-4-3, he led the nation in wins and winning percentage (.851). In 2006-07, Sauer finished the season 52nd in GAA (3.03) and 50th in save percentage (.896). • Sauer set single-season program bests (since 1961-62) in goals against average and save percentage. His 1.95 GAA topped Marty Turco’s 2.16 GAA marks in both 1995-96 and 1997-98. Sauer’s save percentage of .924 bested Al Montoya’s .917 save rate in 2003-04. • Sauer recorded a career-best 30 wins last season to become just the fourth Michigan goalie to reach the 30-win mark in a season. Marty Turco (1995-98) did it three times as a sophomore (34), junior (33) and senior (33). Al Montoya had 30 wins in 2002-03 and 2004-05 and Steve Shields had 30 in 1992-93. • With 66 career triumphs Sauer’s next win will tie him with Scott Sharples (1987-90) for fifth on U-M’s career goalie wins list. Career Goalie Wins 1. Marty Turco (1995-98) 2. Steve Shields (1991-94) 3. Josh Blackburn (1980-83) 4. Al Montoya (1994-97) 5 Scott Sharples (1987-90) 6. Billy Sauer (2006-09)

A 17-year veteran of the NHL, Red Berenson (U-M, 1962) has spent 24 seasons at the helm for the Wolverines, where he owns a 644-298-68 record. In 2007-08, he was honored with the Spencer Penrose Award as college hockey’s top coach. Berenson is currently in eighth place on college hockey’s coaching wins list and is one of eight head coaches in college hockey history to accumulate 600 wins. A former Michigan captain and two-time All-American for U-M from 1960-62, Berenson has averaged more than 26 wins per season in his collegiate coaching career. He has led Michigan to a pair of NCAA Championships (1996, 1998) and 18 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament, the longest active streak of any school in college hockey. He spent three seasons (1980-82) as head coach of the NHL’s St. Louis Blues before coming back to Michigan, earning NHL Coach of the Year honors in 1981. For his “outstanding service to hockey in the United States” Berenson was given the NHL’s Lester Patrick Award on Nov. 6, 2006. • • • •
