Introduction: Professional Development and Training in 2015-16 PLEASE READ CAREFULLY AS THIS SECTION HAS CHANGED! The Office of Professional Learning manages professional development (PD) and other training opportunities for all Providence Schools staff over the course of each school year. Staff development is critical to the implementation of district initiatives, and ample consideration goes into each year’s offerings. Training programs change annually based on district design.  The district is again using the Teachscape system for scheduling of, and enrollment in, professional development and training for 2015-16. Starting on July 9, 2015 at 9:00 a.m., summer offerings will become available for enrollment through the Teachscape Learn platform. The system is used to track enrollment and record attendance for payroll as well as for individual records and other purposes as needed. It is the teacher’s responsibility to log into Teachscape and sign up for training sessions as appropriate.  Because the planning process for 2015-16 professional development is still in progress, this guide does not include a complete list of all professional development to run during the school year. Instead, a schedule of summer trainings is provided, along with information on which teacher types are eligible for each. A more complete list of all professional learning opportunities for 2015-16 will be provided by the beginning of the school year.  Note that the categories within Teachscape Learn have changed. This has been done in an effort to streamline the process; however, please keep in mind that just because a workshop is viewable on Teachscape does not necessarily mean that you are eligible to attend it. You should only sign up for a workshop if your teacher type is listed as eligible in this guide.  You will be compensated for paid district-based PD running outside of school hours at the negotiated district rate, if you are eligible for the workshop. If you are uncertain of your eligibility for a specific workshop, or if you are not sure which listed teacher type corresponds to your teaching assignment, please contact the Office of Professional Learning.  Some workshops may be added later in the year which run during Common Planning Time, Block Time (at high schools), or otherwise during regular school hours. There is no additional compensation for these workshops since participants are already being paid at their daily rate.  Payment for summer PD will be rendered in the first regular paycheck of the school year. For workshops running during the school year, allow at least 2-3 weeks for your attendance to be processed and verified for payment. Be sure to sign up on Teachscape ahead of time, as this enables attendance to be processed for payroll more quickly.  PD is designed to enhance knowledge and understanding in preparation for implementation of new programs or initiatives and to provide ongoing training to support the continuous improvement of teaching and learning. Teachscape entries for individual workshops include aligned standards from the Rhode Island Professional Teaching Standards (RIPTS) and/or Providence Schools Framework for Effective Teaching.

General Guidelines  Remember that, without permission from your supervisor and approval from the Office of Professional Learning, you may not sign up for or attend PD sessions not listed for your teacher type in this guide, and you will not receive compensation OR credit for attending any such PD session.  Seating and materials are limited to the maximum number of people as listed for each PD session in Teachscape. Walk-ins are permitted when feasible. However, if you arrive at a PD session in which you are not enrolled and eligible, you may be turned away without compensation or credit.  If you are going to drop a session, please do so in a timely fashion so that others may sign up and the sign-in sheet is printed accurately.  Communications and important updates regarding PD will be made primarily via EMAIL to your PPSD.ORG account. Make certain that your accurate PPSD email address is included in your Teachscape profile.  It is possible that changes will be made to the PD schedule; when this does occur, we will contact anyone who has already enrolled via e-mail. Again, please contact the Office of Professional Learning if you are unable to find your workshops on Teachscape or otherwise have questions about the schedule.  Confirm your registration status on Teachscape immediately prior to attending PD sessions and check your email regularly for notifications. To ease demand for parking, carpooling is highly recommended.  You must arrive no later than 15 minutes after the scheduled start time to receive payment for a workshop. If you arrive later than that, you can only attend as an unpaid auditor (or sign up for a different session of the workshop if available).  The Office of Professional Learning cannot process credit and payment without attendance verification. You must be eligible to attend and checked IN by the facilitator at the beginning of each session, and you must sign OUT verifying your attendance at the end. If you leave a session early, you must notify the facilitator.  Certain workshops are designated as recommended for teachers who are not previously trained. These workshops are generally intended for teachers who are either (a) new to the district; or (b) have had their teaching assignments changed and are now teaching a course and/or administering an assessment for which they have not previously been trained. To return to the previous example, the workshop in Corrective Reading is available for untrained teachers in Grades 3-5 who are using the Corrective Reading program. That means that a Grade 3 teacher who is not using the program would not be eligible, nor would a Grade 3 teacher who is using the program but has previously taken the Corrective Reading training. Again, if you are not sure whether you are eligible for one of these workshops, please contact the Office of Professional Learning.  Substitute teachers assigned to a single classroom for half of a school year or more should follow the PD recommendations for the teachers for whom they are substituting. How to Register for PD and Manage Your Schedule Using Teachscape The following instructions should help you navigate the Teachscape system and enroll in your PD. Accessing the System, Registering for a Workshop, and Changing or Dropping Registrations 1) Go to http://login.teachscape.com, which should display a login screen. If you were active in the district during 2014-15, you should have a functioning account, including a Username and Password. If you are unable to log in or you do not have an account, please contact the Office of Professional Learning. 2) You should be taken to a screen that displays links for Teachscape Focus, Teachscape Reflect, and Teachscape Learn. Click on Teachscape Learn. Alternatively, click on the Learn tab in the upper left corner. 3) On the next screen, click on the tab labeled Courses and Learning Resources. Under “Providence Professional Development,” you will find a series of links. Click on the link that corresponds to the type of PD that you are trying to find. For paid district-based PD, this typically means clicking on your level (Elementary, Middle, or High School). There are also sections for New and Beginning Teachers who participate in the Teacher Induction Program, Coaches and Specialists, and Support Professionals (all support professionals are now listed separately, rather than within level-based categories). 4) If you are searching by level, a short list of categories will appear, corresponding to the titles of the tables in this guide. To find a workshop, click on the title of the table in which you found the workshop. A list of all summer workshops found in that particular table will appear, and you can browse this list to find the session(s) in which you want to enroll. (Using the Search function tends to be more complicated and is not recommended.) 5) Click on the title of the workshop in which you wish to enroll, and this will take you to a screen with more details about the workshop and a Register button. Clicking on the Register button will in turn lead you to the process of reserving a seat in the workshop. 6) You cannot register for more than one session of the same workshop at the same time. If you register for a workshop and wish to change to a different session of the same workshop, you will need to drop the initial session first. 7) To drop a session, first click on the tab labeled My Learning, second from the left near the top of the screen. This will take you to a list of all sessions in which you are currently enrolled. To the right of each listing, the phrase “More Actions” will appear; click on this. 8) Several options, including Drop, will appear. Click on Drop, then confirm that you want to drop the session on the next screen.

2015-16 PK-12 School PD Guide, pg. 6 Notes on Organization and Profiles 

In addition to organizing workshops by categories, the system is set up to filter the courses that appear for you based on your 2015-16 teaching assignment, as identified by the district’s Office of Human Resources.

The system is not designed to filter down to every possible detail, however, particularly when specialized programs are involved. If, for example, elementary teachers in Grades K-1 only are eligible for a workshop, it will likely still appear for all elementary teachers. Similarly, most or all Grades 9-10 ELA teachers will likely be able to see the Springboard Initial Institute workshop, but only those who have not been previously trained are eligible to enroll.

Again, it is important to remember that you should not assume that you are eligible for a workshop just because it appears for you on Teachscape, and that if you attend a workshop for which you are not eligible according to this guide, you will not be compensated. The title of each workshop will contain information indicating who is eligible.

Most of your profile settings will be updated automatically, based on the most recent information from the district’s Office of Human Resources. If you have trouble finding one of your workshops, you are encouraged to contact the Office of Professional Learning to confirm that your profile is configured correctly.

It is therefore very important that you follow this guide carefully and make sure you are enrolling in workshops that correspond to your assignment for 2015-16 according to the guide.

How to Read the Course Listings in this Guide 

The format for the course listings in this guide has been revised to reduce repetition of information and make it easier to find your courses on Teachscape. To this end, teachers have been grouped into a smaller number of broader categories, which will match the categories that appear on Teachscape.

Once you have found the table that corresponds to your teacher type, be sure to review all workshops listed in that table to determine your eligibility for each.

Workshops are listed by title in the left-hand column of each table, along with the number of hours and the summer dates. If additional sessions of the workshop in question will be running during the academic year, the additional dates will be listed here but may not be available on Teachscape on July 9.

Most summer trainings are running at Providence Career & Technical Academy. If a summer training is running anywhere other than at PCTA, the location will be noted in the left-hand column as well.

The right-hand column in each table provides details on eligibility in bullet-point form. To be eligible for a course, you must meet the criteria for each bullet point. For example, the following listing is excerpted from the table for High School Core Content Teachers:

Office of Professional Learning – PD Office. 797 Westminster St., 3rd Fl. 456-9100x11252. [email protected]

2015-16 PK-12 School PD Guide, pg. 7 WORKSHOPS STAR Reading and Math 2 hours August 6 *or* August 14

ELIGIBILITY  Secondary ELA, Math, Special Education, and ELL/LEP Teachers  Not previously trained in STAR Reading and Math

The DBQ Project 12 hours (2 parts) Part 1: August 11 *or* August 12 Part 2: TBD (during school year)

Secondary Social Studies Teacher Leaders

For The DBQ Project, any secondary Social Studies Teacher Leader can attend. To attend STAR Reading and Math, a participant must be a secondary ELA, Math, Special Education, or ELL/LEP teacher and not be previously trained in STAR Reading and Math.

The categories and subcategories in Teachscape Learn are designed to mirror the listings in this guide as closely as possible. For example, if you are a Grade 7 ELA Teacher, you should look up the table titled Middle School Core Content Teachers. Follow the instructions on page 5 to log into Teachscape, proceed to the Courses and Learning Resources screen, then select Middle School Professional Development:

The next screen will list four categories, all corresponding to the titles of the Middle School tables in this guide. Click on Middle School Core Content Teachers:

2015-16 PK-12 School PD Guide, pg. 8 

On the next screen, scroll down to find offerings of the workshops listed in the Middle School Core Content Teachers table on page 10.

Remember that while the system will filter the viewable offerings based on your Teachscape profile, the eligibility requirements in the guide – not the simple fact that you can see a workshop – are what determine whether or not you should enroll in any given workshop.

If, after following these steps, you cannot find a workshop for which you are eligible and which is listed in this guide, please contact the Office of Professional Learning for assistance.
