SPARKLING WINES

Sparkling wine has been in serious ‘demand’ over the last few years. In the UK alone sales on bubbly have been up 15%, and research by Harpers Magazine states that it is the fastest growing alcohol in the U.K. In a recent Harpers article it said that “Shoppers are looking for something to treat themselves, and sparkling wine is a luxury product with an affordable price tag. Shoppers are trading up from Cava to Prosecco and Prosecco to Champagne, boosting sales of sparkling wine.” Prosecco is leading the sparkling wine frenzy with sales bursting through the roof but there are other options for those fizz crazy folk like Cremant for example. What is a Cremant? Pronounced ‘Cray-mawn’. It is a French sparkling wine made in the exact same method as Champagne but may use other grapes than the traditional ones used in Champagne. Usually these sparkles are less ‘bubbly’, think ‘gentle fizz’ as opposed to ‘In your nose’. So typically a lot softer than Prosecco as well.

PROVENCE ROSE Rosé from Provence is pale, delicately scented, gently spicy and pairs brilliantly with dishes laced with southern French herbs, local olive oil and fragrant sweet garlic. These wines are generally blends from grapes that sprout from the picturesque vineyards such as Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvedre and Grenache.  The Côtes de Provence is a whopping appellation stretching from beyond Marseilles almost as far as Cannes so the choice is pretty wide – and it’s well worth being choosy.  France is the world’s largest producer of Rose. Provence alone produces half of this figure. The consumption of rose in France has increased from 10% in the nineties to 30% in just two decades! So why is Rose so popular? “Its relative inexpesiveness, combined with its good taste; a simple and affordable luxury” says Michel Couderc, head of Economics and Studies at the Global Rose Observatory. Producers are making special cuvées for their importers, or making second wines, or launching prestige cuvees (see Chaberts below), and they are even bottling them in a wide array of bottles.  See our selection below!

BORDEAUX

What to Expect?

When we think of Bordeaux it is usually the rarefied world of Cru Classes (The First Growths) which springs to mind. There is however much more to the region, exceptional wines and great value can be found and appreciated. It is important to remember that with Bordeaux balance is the overall guide; if tannins are in balance with the fruit and the fruit is in balance with the acidity and the whole thing gels and feel harmonious on your palate then you’re onto something. Petit Chateau compete directly with everything from Aussi Shiraz to California Cab but Bordeaux shouldn’t be ‘massive’ or ‘in your face’ it shouldn’t have oodles of fruit either. This wine should be restrained, even from hot vintages. It should be refreshing. It should be a fantastic food wine where there is enough acidity and tannin to freshen the palate and it will get better with a meal! The tannins however should be ripe enough so that there are no hard edges, it should not make your mouth cringe so to speak. Don’t forget that Bordeaux is usually a blend – Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and sometimes Malbec being the most usual. Each lends a certain characteristic to the wine.

THE GREAT WINES OF ITALY AND SPAIN RUEDA & VERDEJO – Though Spain is better

SOUTH AFRICA vs. NEW ZEALAND Sauvignon Blanc

NEW ZEALAND burst on the International scene in the 1980’s with a style of Sauvignon Blanc that was so individual that some scientists contributed to the holes in the ozone layer in that part of the world! Marlborough in particular has set the benchmark for this style and it is here that Sauvignon Blanc thrives in dry gravel soils producing expressive, pungent and herbaceous wines. The smell often described as sharp and piercing with notes of gooseberries, nettles, crushed blackcurrent leaves and occasionally cat’s pee!

SOUTH AFRICA is starting to give the International scene a run for the money. South Africa has inherited some of the most ancient soils in the world, traceable back to the first continent. Despite the fact that South Africa has a dry warm climate the region produces quite a sizable amount of high-quality Sauvignon Blanc often at excellent value for money. Within the Western Cape region there are several smaller, more distinct areas including Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Elgin (among others). The Primary flavours are green herbs, guava and green pepper with light-medium body and acidity. Higher end wines offer up flavours of beeswax, jasmine flowers, honeysuckle, lemon and nut oils. Some styles can share more affinity with the French homeland and show a definite elegance and crispness rather than the super expressive New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs.
