RHONE VALLEY E.A.R.L. Burle 2012 Gigondas, Les Pallieroudas 2011 Vacqueyras 2011 Cotes du Rhone Burle’s wines are rustic and hearty, much like the Gigondas that originally gave the area its reputation. This Gigondas comes primarily from the Pallieroudas vineyard, mostly composed of Grenache. A kilometer away another vineyard has a bit of Mourvedre. The average vine age is 60 years. The Vacqueyras is 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, from a vineyard with 40-50 year vines. The CDR is about 80% Grenache with Cinsault and Syrah. Average vine age is 40 years. No fining, no filtration and organic farming. These are big, rich, complex, age-worthy wines with ripe fruit and plenty of tannin. Total production for each wine is only 500 cases! Font Sarade 2013 VDP de Vaucluse, Blanc This Viognier from Bernard Burle, Damien and Florent’s older brother is a delicious example of the Rhone varietal, as well as a really nice value. Chateau Cadenette 2013 Costieres de Nimes, Rosé A quaint little estate run by a very nice man. They are in the process of obtaining their organic certification. The Rosé is 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache, with strawberry and raspberry aromas. BORDEAUX BORDEAUX SUPERIEUR Chateau de Brague 2009 Chateau de Brague A great value with complexity and balance. 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc. Dark berry fruits and cedar.

France LOIRE Domaine Andre Dezat et Fils 2012 Sancerre, Blanc 2012 Sancerre, Rouge 2013 Sancerre, Rosé 2012 Pouilly-Fumé Although long considered one of the most respected of Loire estates, the Dezat wines have not been in the US. For years they have had a strong relationship with Berry Bros & Rudd whom I suspect buy enough of Dezat’s wines to make selling elsewhere unnecessary. Soil type is limestone, sandy clay and flint. The red is Pinot Noir grown mostly on “Caillotes” (pebbly limestone soils) and matured in oak barrels. The Rosé, also from Pinot Noir, undergoes a short maceration before pressing. Light salmon color, really delicious. ROUSSILLON Domaine Vaquer 2011 Cuvee Bernard, Vin De Pays Des Cotes Catalanes

2012 Esquisse, Blanc, Cotes du Roussillon Villages

2012 Muscat de Rivesaltes 1985 Cuvee Fernand This tiny estate is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, within view of the Mediterranean. The “Bernard” is Carignan, Grenache and Syrah. The Esquisse is Roussane, Macabeu and Grenache Blanc. The “Fernand,” made by Frederique Vaquer’s father-in-law, is 80% Carignan and 20% Grenache. It was vinified in cement and made by a man who believed wines should take time to come around, but last decades. The wine was left in his cellar at 1300 meters at the foot of Mount Puigmal. One morning fifteen years ago Fernand took some samples and drove down the coast to Roses and made his first sale to El Bulli!

France ROUSSILLON Domaine des Schistes 2013 Le Bosc, Cotes du Roussillon, Blanc 50% Grenache Gris, 30% Vermentino and 20% Macabeo. This is fresh and lively with a pretty floral bouquet. Organically farmed. PROVENCE Domaine de la Laidiere 2009 Bandol, Rouge 2011 Bandol, Blanc 2013 Bandol, Rose Domaine de la Laidiere, located in the east of the Bandol appellation near Sainte Anne d'Evenos, was created in 1850. It now comprises 25 hectares many of which are on hillsides next to the cellars. The orientation is mostly south and southeast, the soils a near perfect combination of clay, limestone and silica. Cuvaison for the red lasts between 20 and 25 days, with elevage in oak foudres for 18 months. The wines tend to be dark purple in color and fairly tannic when young. The white is made up of Clairette and Ugni Blanc. Chateau Barbanau – Clos Val Bruyere 2011 Cassis, Blanc Clos Val Bruyere has seven hectares in one of the A.O.C.’s most optimal locations, with vineyards planted with Marsanne, Clairette, Ugni Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc. The wines are wonderfully perfumed with notes of clementine and acacia. The soils are a combination of clay and limestone. Organically farmed. Domaine Hauvette 2007 Cornaline, A.O.C. Baux de Provence Although relatively unknown in the US, the wines of Domaine Hauvette are a staple in Michelin-starred restaurants throughout France. The vineyards, surrounded by olive groves, pines and almond trees, are planted in poor, stony soils of clay and limestone, farmed organically and yield little. The Cornaline is Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

France SOUTHWEST FRANCE CAHORS Chateau Pineraie 2010 Cahors A family estate located in Puy-l’Eveque, dating back to the 15th century. 85% Malbec, 15% Merlot. Their vineyard covers roughly 50 hectares with many of the vines about 35 years of age. Thirty-day maceration, barrique aged for about a year, in mostly two to three year-old barrels. Ripe, almost roasted black fruits, pepper and leather. 2009 L’Autentique This is Chateau Pineraie’s best wine from their oldest and highest terraced, 5 hectare vineyard. 100% Malbec, low yields and a careful selection of the best grapes. It is considered one of the very best Cahors. LANDES Domaine Augeron 2013 Blanc, VDP de Landes Family run estate in the Landes region, Napoleon’s great pine forest of the Southwest. The Blanc is Colombard, Ugni Blanc and Gros Manseng.

RIOJA ALTA Viña Olabarri 2005 Olabarri, Reserva 2001 Olabarri, Gran Reserva This is perhaps the smallest of the fourteen bodegas located in the town of Haro, home to many of the greatest Rioja estates. The wines are fairly traditional in style and great values. The age of vines is 30 years for the Reserva and 45+ for the Gran Reserva. The Reserva is 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano. The Gran Reserva is 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha. Bodegas de Saenz de Santamaria 2009 Rondan, Crianza Located in the town of Cenicero, Saenz de Santamaria have extensive vineyards in the hills southwest of the town, planted mostly with Tempranillo, much of which is from vines over 30 years old. Minimal intervention in the wine making produces rather classic Rioja, not at all modern in style yet rich and mouth filling and deeply satisfying to all but the insane. NAVARRA Bodegas Lezaun 2012 Tinto 2013 Rosado All wines are certified organic at this uniquely small, family-run winery located in the northern, Basque region of Navarra. The wines have a terrific balance of purity and terroir at a price the workingman can afford! The Tinto is 55% Tempranillo, 25% Garnacha and 20% Merlot. The Rosado is made from Garnacha. Production is miniscule, shockingly so given the prices. RIBERA DEL DUERO Bodegas Reyes 2009 Teofilo Reyes Considered by many to be one of the most legendary winemakers in Spain. The vineyards are located near the town of Peñafiel and offer unusually low yields for the region, typically not more than 30hl/ha. Classic Ribera. 100% Tempranillo.

EMPORDA JOC 2011 JOC Negre 2012 JOC Blanc Located in the northern-most appellation of Catalonia, 15 minutes over the mountains from France, near the bay of Roses (think El Bulli, once upon a time), the JOC wines are unique yet classic Mediterranean wines. In 1991 Jordi Oliver Conti and his brother founded what would become one of the most acclaimed and sought after wines of Emporda. Recently the brothers split and Jordi, the oenologist, started JOC, sourcing his grapes from his favorite growers and favorite vineyards. The Negre is mostly Garnatxa, with a little Syrah and a tiny bit of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Six months ageing in 2nd year French oak. The Blanc is Garnatxa Blanca and Macabeu. The grapes are grown in mostly granitic and slate soils in the municipality of Garriguella. Celler Marià Pagès 2013 Serrasague, Negre Twelve-hectare estate owned by Rosa and Marià Pagès. In many ways the northern winegrowing region of the Emporda is ideal, dry, sunny, rarely too cold, but with a brutal northern wind, the Tramuntana, howling across the Pyrenees to clear the bugs away. Mostly Garnatxa with some Ull de Llebre (similar to Tempranillo) and a little Cabernet Franc. No oak.

SAGARDOA – BASQUE CIDER Petritegi 2013 Petritegi The cider houses in the Basque region are centered almost entirely around the town of Astigarraga. The cider houses open in late January and generally close in May. The typical meal is one of the great inventions of all time: a salt cod omelet, a large, extremely rare steak, Idiazabal cheese and walnuts, all the while accompanied by unlimited amounts of fresh cider from the enormous oak barrels. During the summer and early fall, bottled cider is drunk with just about anything. The cider has intense flavors of apple and is unfined and unfiltered with only 6% Alcohol. You can drink a bottle. It’s good for you.
