museums, churches, theatres and stately buildings: it is a warm and hospitable city, to be experienced and enjoyed to the fullest. Here the scenes and the colours speak of an ancient Roman colony, medieval battles, renaissance splendour, refined collectors and perceptive patrons. But Piacenza and its province are also areas to be discovered for their tradition in food and wine production.

The campus is designed along the lines of those in Britain and the United States and includes an 8,000 square metre sports centre and facilities for student and staff housing. The Faculty of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences, renowned for the excellence of its research, is based here together with the Faculty of Economics and Law which for many years has run a double degree programme involving international universities. The Faculty of Education is a point of reference for social and educational areas and provides undergraduate and graduate programmes.

Areas of research

R

esearch is a priority in the overall university mission at Piacenza and Cremona. The campuses carry out research at 3 departments, 8 institutes and 15 centres which formulate, plan and test new ideas and solutions for advancing knowledge (including from the perspective of society, the economy, the environment and production) and for making sound improvements to the environment around us. Professors, associates and students work in an atmosphere influenced by many disciplines, in partnership with other national and international research organisations, and by developing close ties with those involved in production. Research projects in Università Cattolica receive funding and support from various public- and private-sector organisations and associations across Italy and around the world. Numerous projects are financed by the Italian ministries - the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR), the Ministry of Farm, Food and Forestry Policies (MIPAAF) and the Ministry of Health - and by other Italian national and regional organisations. Other projects obtain financial backing from the European Union, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and a large number of private companies that have found a tangible response to their specific needs through the experience and expertise of Università Cattolica‘s professors and research fellows. The Piacenza and Cremona campuses are involved in research in the following macro areas: ❚environment ❚sustainability and security in the agrifood sector ❚food education ❚production of renewable energies ❚economics of innovation ❚social responsibility ❚government administration ❚entrepreneurship ❚labour markets ❚business marketing policies ❚rights and social integration of vulnerable members of society ❚business law ❚international law ❚management

Cattolica and the community

T

he Piacenza and Cremona campuses and the local communities enjoy a prosperous and productive relationship which has developed on the basis of exchange and growth. As Italy’s breadbasket and one of the top agricultural regions in Europe, the Po Valley faces new, crucial challenges and Università Cattolica is actively engaged in developing solutions. The local community justifiably recognises the value of the university for the training of professionals to become part of the local productive fabric and beyond. Many of the activities of the Piacenza and Cremona campuses are interconnected with the market dynamics, particularly regarding milk and dairy products, both at national and EU level, and they provide solid support to the decisions of business owners and the various trade organisations for the agricultural industry. The university thus attempts to link the potential of university research with the expectations of various sectors, which need to operate at increasingly higher standards, particularly within the complex agrifood system. Furthermore, in operating through 15 research centres, Università Cattolica at Piacenza and Cremona collects and processes up-to-date statistical information about issues concerning the economy, society, and the labour market, for the purpose of creating a single, officially recognised databank that is continuously available for use and regularly updated. The university works for and with local government, trade associations, and development agencies; it organises seminars and training courses, promotes sustainable development in farming and conducts research into forecasting environmental risks. It studies biodiversity and biotechnologies, the use of biomass in agriculture, and the safeguarding of historical monuments and other cultural landmarks. Although students may come from many distant locations, drawn by a reputation for academic excellence and lively mix of disciplines and cultures, the university at Piacenza and Cremona interacts with the local community at many levels and in various spheres.

The University and the World Strongly rooted in the local community, the campuses at Piacenza and Cremona of Università Cattolica also have strong connections with rest of the country and show a real commitment to international links. This is clear from the fact that so many of the students come not only from all parts of Italy but also from abroad. The faculties also offer many courses taught in English, preparing students for their future professional life and attracting international students. The ‘double degree’ programme which the campuses set up many years ago, together with the exchange programmes run with foreign universities, mean that there is a lively international flavour to the educational experience. The research activities of the university are often carried out in conjunction with foreign universities, there is a rich internship programme for students and the university has partnerships with around 80 international organisations.
