“CHRIST IS RISEN!” By Eve Lallas “Chist is Risen! Truly He is Risen!” The most glorious proclamation throughout Christendom. Our Lonrd’s Resurrection is His Promise of everlasting life to all of us who believe in Him. As we commemorate the holiest day of the year, let us recall the exemplary life of Jesus and His teachings which summon each of us to abide by His word. During our Easter service as “Christos Anesti!” resounds, countless lit candles transform a darkened church into a sea of bright light; symbolic of our Savior’s Holy

Resurrection leading us from darkness to His True Light—a new life. Thus, because as the saying goes, the Greeks always have the specific descriptive word for things, Easter Sunday is accurately referred to as “Lambri”—Bright Sunday. As Orthodox Christians when greeting each other during the following weeks with the joyful “Christos Anesti—Alithos Anesti!” let us be reminded that our Lord’s Resurrection is the affirmation of our faith in Christ and His fulfillment of eternal life—the very essence of Christianity.

∞ Message from Father ª·nuel I pray that everyone has a blessed Holy Week that is coming up and a wonderful and memorable Easter celebration. Please remember that attendance to church services along with prayer and reading of scripture and other spiritual books are vital to one’s spiritual growth. Everyone is invited to come and participate in the holy services that our church offers to us. It is important what we put into coming to church more than what we get out of coming to church. Two people could be sitting side by side and one of them receive a miracle by coming and the other one is bored as ever. It is what is inside each of us that prepares us to receive God’s grace. Let us prepare as best as we can to come and receive God’s blessings this Holy Week and Easter. Everyone is also encouraged to prepare and receive Holy Communion. Preparation does not only mean fasting from certain foods, but also asking forgiveness from one another and making amends to do good rather than wrong. There are certain guidelines that the Archdiocese has made regarding different things. Please take the time to read them as they may pertain to you personally. If you have any questions regarding one’s eligibility to receive Holy Communion, please contact

me and speak with me first. The church and I as your priest want to find the way to bring you closer to God, not estrange you from the Church, so please ask whatever questions you may have. People who are separated or divorced must speak with their parish priest prior to receiving Holy Communion. Anyone that needs to make an appointment for Holy Confession is asked to do so prior to Holy Week. Just call and make an appointment. Anyone who is uncertain if they should receive Holy Communion should speak with me prior to receiving. It is also a reminder to everyone to dress modestly when you attend church. People can be distracted during services if what you are wearing is not appropriate for church. Women should wear a skirt or dress to Church and not pants unless it is medically necessary. Length of skirt or dress needs to be appropriate for church. We are hoping to have help this year for Holy Week. Please note on the schedule the many times that Holy Communion is offered throughout Holy Week and Easter Week. The proper

Reflections on Saint Thomas By Bill Poulos The Sunday of Thomas is observed one week after Holy Pascha. It commemorates two post-resurrectional appearances of Christ to his disciples as recorded in the Gospel of Saint John. The first is the Lord’s appearance on the evening of the Sunday following the Jewish Passover. Saint Thomas was not with them to experience this profound and joyous event. The second is Christ’s appearance eight days later when Thomas was with the group. Thomas, as is well known, for some apparently inexplicable reason, could not accept the other apostles’ testimony that they had seen the risen Lord. This disbelief led to his skeptical statement that unless he could actually see and touch Jesus’ wounds he would not believe. Thomas is, of course, invited at the Lord’s second appearance to examine the scars of His Passion which elicits from the apostle his magnificent confession, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). How can we better understand the puzzling figure of Saint Thomas? Can we learn anything from him about living the Christian life? Thomas is mentioned just thirteen times in the New Testament, nine of these references are in Saint John’s Gospel. Un-

like the other allusions to Thomas whose name is merely included in a general list of the disciples, Saint John gives specific details about Thomas’ relationship to his Master. What will an examination of some of these passages reveal to us about the saint’s personality? Saint John first introduces Thomas at a critical moment in Jesus’ ministry. The Lord had just been informed that His friend Lazarus was ill. He delays two days until Lazarus has died before going to him. This decision alarms the disciples because traveling to Lazarus would necessitate returning to Judea where the Jewish authorities had recently threatened to kill Christ. When Thomas realizes the Lord’s resolve to go Lazarus he, perhaps indicating a position of leadership within the group, urges his fellow disciples to go with Christ, “that we may die with Him.” (John 11:16). Clearly, this demonstrates Thomas’ devotion to his Master even at great personal risk. As a result of his action he and the others would be rewarded with witnessing at Lazarus’ tomb their Master’s power over death. Thomas next appears during Jesus’ final discourses with His apostles shortly before His betrayal. In these the Lord taught them that He was returning to His Father’s house to prepare a See page 7

∞ Message from Father ª·nuel From page 2 way to receive Holy Communion is to prepare by fasting, prayer, asking and giving forgiveness and also by coming and being present and taking part in the Divine Liturgy before receiving Holy Communion. Please note: The Liturgy on Holy Thursday will begin at 6 a.m. for those who need to go to work afterwards. The Liturgy on Holy Saturday will begin at 7:30 a.m. There are several opportunities to receive Holy Communion throughout Holy Week. Note the asterisks for Holy Communion. There is no smoking prior to receiving Holy Communion. Lipstick is to be removed prior to coming up for Holy Communion. Refraining from marital relations is part of preparing for Holy Communion. If someone must take their medicine in the morning, they should do so and still come for Holy Communion. If you have any further questions about medicine and Communion, ask me. There are so many things that I have heard that people think are part of what we are suppose to do and what we are not suppose to do when preparing for Communion, if you have a question, ask. As far as how is one to prepare by fasting, you should ask your family members how they were taught to fast. The church teaches that we are to refrain from meat and dairy products

during Holy Week. Wishing everyone a very blessed Holy Week and Easter Season, Fr. Manuel

Reflections on Saint Thomas From page 3 place for them and would return for them. And, He explains, that they know both where He is going and the way. Just as before Thomas speaks up and expresses the group’s confusion about Christ’s statement by asking Him how they can know the way if they do not know where He is going? Christ responds to him, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6). In this statement the Lord reveals to them His perfect revelation of and unity with His heavenly Father. Because of Thomas’ attentiveness to his Master’s words and sincere desire to grasp their meaning he and the others were brought to the realization of exactly who Jesus was and that salvation itself was present with them in His divine Person. The Lord continued to teach them more about Himself and what terrible events were about to transpire. None of them could fully grasp what was being said to them. Does Thomas’ behavior and attitude before the Crucifixion help to explain his refusal to believe the report of the Resurrection? Obviously, he had been a faithful and fearless disciple who had come to fully realize who his Master was and why He had come. What changed him? Doubtless, Christ’s passion and death had a devastating effect on him. Was his inability to believe the account of the risen Lord a mechanism to protect himself from further disappointment or disillusionment? Often faith is challenged not because it is weak but precisely because it is fervent, strong and expectant. When God acts in an unanticipated or undesired way it often results in fear or confusion until God’s ultimate purpose is revealed. Is this what happened to Saint Thomas? We cannot be certain of the complex motives of his actions. What we can be certain of is that many of us have felt or do feel disappointed in or abandoned by God because He did not act the way we wanted or expected. Because of this we may, like Thomas, have been brought to the point of requiring proof of God’s existence and power. Yet, if we, as he, never completely gave up or give up hope we eventually came to or will

come to the realization that He always does what is best for us and is always present to strengthen and protect us. We must never forget, as Saint Thomas perhaps did, the Lord’s promise that He would never leave nor forsake us.
