“Celebrating our history; building our future!”
14th Sunday of Ma hew— The Wedding Banquet O Lord and my God, you had prepared your banquet for me to come and feast at your table. You invited me to the wedding of your Son to have eternal joy and to be in communion with Him. But I have made many excuses for I have no me and my schedule is very busy with many earthly worries. I neglected your free invita on. Then you called me once again with all the people of your kingdom, and this me I came and sat at the table with all my iniqui es and my sins. I did not prepare myself to the climax of this banquet. I came reluctantly and carelessly, but you, my Lord, no ced me and asked me friendly: where is your wedding garment—the garment of righteousness? I was so silent and speechless because I had no words to jus fy my act. You have called me among many and I refused to be chosen. Sunday Sept 6, 2015

THE EPISTLE (For the Fourteenth Sunday a er Pentecost) Thou, O Lord, wilt keep and preserve us. Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed. The Reading from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. (1:21‐2:4) Brethren, it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; He has put his seal upon us and given us His Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. But I call God to witness against me—it was to spare you that I refrained from coming to Corinth. Not that we lord it over your faith; we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. For I made up my mind not to make you another painful visit. For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. For I wrote you out of much afflic on and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you. THE GOSPEL (For the Fourteenth Sunday of Ma hew) The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Ma hew. (22:2‐14) The Lord spoke this parable: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.’ But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.’ And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the a endants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.” When you see Good try to imitate it And when you see bad try to eliminate it. THE NATIVITY OF OUR MOST HOLY LADY THE THEOTOKOS (Sept 8) VESPERAL LITURGY ON TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 7 @ 6:00 pm According to the ancient tradi on of the Church, the Theotokos was born of barren and aged parents, Joachim and Anna, about the year 16 or 17 before the birth of Christ. Joachim was descended from the royal line of David, of the tribe of Judah. Anna was of the priestly tribe of Levi, a daughter of the priest Ma han and Mary, his wife. Saint Euphrosynus the Cook (Sept 11) ‐ The Story of a Cook, a Priest and The Three Apples was from one of the Pales nian monasteries, and his obedience was to work in the kitchen as a cook. Toiling away for the brethren, St Euphrosynus did not absent himself from thought about God, but rather dwelt in prayer and fas ng. He remembered always that obedience is the first duty of a monk, and therefore he was obedient to the elder brethren. The pa ence of the saint was amazing: they o en reproached him, but he made no complaint and endured every unpleasantness. St Euphrosynus pleased the Lord by his inner virtue which he concealed from people, and the Lord Himself revealed to the mo‐ nas c brethren the spiritual heights of their unassuming fellow‐monk. One of the priests of the mon‐ astery prayed and asked the Lord to show him the blessings prepared for the right‐ eous in the age to come. The priest saw in a dream what Paradise is like, and he contemplated its inexplicable beauty with fear and with joy. He also saw there a monk of his monastery, the cook Eu‐ phrosynus. Amazed at this encoun‐ ter, the presbyter asked Euphrosynus, how he came to be there. The saint an‐ swered that he was in Paradise through the great mercy of God. The priest again asked whether Euphrosynus would be able to give him something from the surrounding beauty. St Euphrosynus sug‐ gested to the priest to take whatev‐ er he wished, and so the priest pointed to garden of Paradise. The monk picked the three luscious apples growing in the three apples, wrapped them in a cloth, and gave them to his companion. When he awoke in the early morning, the priest thought the vision a dream, but suddenly he no ced next to him the cloth with the fruit of Paradise wrapped in it, and emi ng a wondrous fragrance. The priest, found St Euphrosynus in church and asked him under oath where he was the night before. The saint answered that he was where the priest also was. Then the monk said that the Lord, in fulfilling the prayer of the priest, had shown him Paradise and had bestown the fruit of Paradise through him, “ the lowly and unworthy servant of God, Euphrosynus.” The priest related everything to the monastery brethren, poin ng out the spiritual lo iness of Euphrosynus in pleasing God, and he pointed to the fra‐ grant paradaisical fruit. Deeply affected by what they heard, the monks went to the kitchen, in order to pay respect to St Euphrosynus, but they did not find him there. Fleeing human glory, the monk had le the monastery. The place where he concealed himself remained unknown, but the monks always re‐ membered that their monas c brother St Euphrosynus had come upon Paradise, and that they in being saved, through the mercy of God would meet him there. They reverently kept and distributed pieces of the apples from Paradise for blessing and for healing. Sunday Sept 6, 2015

THE SYNAXARION
On September 6 in the Holy Orthodox Church, we commemorate the dread miracle of the Chief Commander Michael that took place in Colossae of Phyrgia; and we also commemorate Saint Archippos of Hierapolis. Verses Most mighty in thy temple, O Michael, Great Marshal, Thou hast marshaled the river’s floods into a funnel. On the sixth, Michael, Prince of Angels, hid the confluence of rivers. The Archangel Michael delivered from destruc on a church and a holy, miraculous spring named for him. The pagans, moved by malice, sought to turn the course of two rivers against the church and the spring. But the Archangel appeared by the prayers of the holy Archippos and, by means of the Cross and a great earthquake that shook the en re area, diverted the waters into an under‐ ground course. Henceforth, the name of that place changed from Colossae to Chonae, which means “funnels” in Greek. Archippos lived there un l age 70, when he entered peacefully into Heaven. On this day, we also commemorate the Martyrs Eudoxios, Zeno, Romulus and Makarios at Melitene in Armenia. By the intercessions of Thy Saints, O God, have mercy on us. Amen.
