SOCIETY OF JESUS

Dear brothers, Peace of Christ! On behalf of our two provinces and the worldwide Society of Jesus, we would like to thank and congratulate all of our Jubilarians this year, especially our Golden Jubilarians, for the generous and faith-filled lives of service they have offered to the Church and the Society over many years. When these men entered the Society of Jesus, they may never have imagined the various ways that the Lord would call on their talents, gifts, and generosity in service to the Kingdom of God. We are grateful to the Lord for calling these men into our Company, and we thank them for their generous and courageous response to his call. This booklet contains brief glimpses of how these men have encountered the Lord in their lives and in their ministries, sharing the Good News of God’s love with those they encountered along the way. May their example inspire us to offer ourselves more completely to the mission of the Society that in all things we may love and serve the Church for the Greater Glory of God. In our Lord,

Brian G. Paulson, SJ Provincial Chicago-Detroit Province

Thomas A. Lawler, SJ Provincial Wisconsin Province

ACCOMPANIMENT Andrew F. Alexander, SJ One of the joys of being a member of Los Compañeros De Jesús has been companionship in the Society. For all our individualism, I have always felt that I’ve been accompanied by brothers and by mentors whose vision and commitment, whose gifts and generosity, inspired me, shaped me, and nurtured me along the way. It has been a privilege and a consolation to be among Jesuits who have the same desires and seek similar graces, and who have great experience and wisdom. I’ve learned so much from brothers whose courage and boldness in ministry has taught me to serve and to share my gifts. It is a natural outcome of this life of being accompanied to be drawn to be with Jesus in accompanying others — my own brothers, but also those we serve. Pope Francis has helped us understand this mission of ours, with others, by fleshing out what we instinctively know about this service. We teach, we serve, we give retreats, we manage and lead, but most of all — in all of that — we accompany people, according to the vision Ignatius laid out in the Annotations of the Exercises (especially #15). We are best at letting God’s grace work in the lives of people by letting God take the lead. We accompany others in discernment and by offering our presence for their journey. They, in turn, share with us, with their care and the witness of their faith. A blessed life, indeed.

FINDING & BEING FOUND Walter C. Deye, SJ “Where are you?” is the first question in Scripture as God goes looking for his beloved creatures, Adam and Eve. As a small child I remember being lost (left behind!) by my family after a day of fun at Coney Island in Cincinnati. After what seemed like hours of wandering and crying, I remember being found, swept up into my father’s arms, and taken safely home. After dinner every night we said the family rosary; each one of us had a favorite decade. Mine was and still is the finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple. The Coney Island experience gave me an affinity experience of the young Jesus and an awareness of parental love, especially protection. When I was a grown man and many years after ordination, I remember my dad reaching out to hold me in his arms after a dark patch in my life when I felt lost, like the Prodigal Son. Good Jesuit brothers did and do the same for me. These moments taught me that we have to celebrate when what was lost is now found. Feeling found, especially after feeling lost, is such a gift given to me by my family and the Society that I have to give it away to others. Life in the Society has been a life of finding God in all things; in all peoples, including my brother Jesuits; the people I’ve been privileged to serve; my family. It has been a life of never truly being lost … but daily finding, being found, uncovering, discovering, and pointing out … God is here, God is with us. God saying, “I see you” even when I don’t see or sense him. “Where are you?” goes both ways. God to me/us and me/us to God. “Where are you?” I think the response for me and God is the same: “Here I am! Stop looking, you found me.” I’ve found him in the Society of Jesus.

VARIETY Mark G. Henninger, SJ The word that comes to mind when I think of my years in the Jesuits is variety. I never imagined the variety of people I would meet, much less live with in the same community! It’s a miracle that we were able to live in as much peace together as we did. The variety of places I’ve been asked to go also has been amazing — theology studies in an international setting at the Gregorian University; learning about the diversity of apostolates around the world; working with Jesuits from many, many different nations. Then, graduate studies in philosophy at UCLA — from Rome to SoCal. Then, to Loyola University Chicago to teach philosophy. Chicago is not LA, and neither of them was my next stop, Zimbabwe, to start up a new school for young African Jesuits who were studying humanities and philosophy. Then, back to the University of Detroit Mercy for more teaching of philosophy, and not just medieval philosophy, but (why not?) African philosophy — perfect for Motown. Then, back to the Gregorian University in Rome, this time not to study but to teach — la logica simbolica, in Italiano. And finally 10 years in the philosophy department at Georgetown University, quite a unique setting; again, different from anywhere I had previously been sent. Mission, mission, mission: I hope, despite my sinfulness, that this is what my life has been about. And the current mission now is hospital chaplaincy at Loyola University Hospital in Chicago, perhaps the mission most unlike anything I’ve had before. And I’m very, very happy with it. It’s been an amazing and humbling ride.

RESTLESSNESS Daniel C. McDonald, SJ While in high school, I came across this quote from Saint Augustine: “Our heart is restless until it rests in you.” My disquiet had discovered a name. I was, by disposition, always restless and felt constrained in this world. In the Society, I gradually discovered this sense of self need not be born of worry and shame, but it was a spark of something else. Restless apprehensions framed so many parts of my life: the desire to serve but not knowing how; the desire to understand while feeling inadequate to the challenge; the desire to comprehend God and others, but afraid of the consequences; the desire to continue in the Society, but with doubts. Pedro Arrupe and General Congregation 32 changed that, and the following words in particular: “What is it to be a companion of Jesus today? It is to engage, under the standard of the cross, in the crucial struggle of our time: the struggle for faith and that struggle for justice which it includes.” (GC32, Decree 4) The scales fell away. Everything of the Spiritual Exercises became clear. What was important was to be engaged in the struggle. That did not mean succeeding, but lively involvement was required. From that time forward, whatever the Society asked of me became something to engage in, and I found God’s repeating graces in every facet of life. The words of G.M. Hopkins are real: “Over again I feel thy finger and find thee.”

THANKSGIVING Lawrence M. Ober, SJ Saint (who was almost forever Blessed) Peter Favre summed up Jesuit life by noting that it was all about “knowing that one is saved and living with a generous heart.“ This time of Jubilee is a time of thanksgiving fortified by remembering how all moments great and small give depth to Favre’s aphorism. And so a time of Jubilee is a time of thanksgiving, to lift up in prayer like incense a half a century of gratefulness for: n

n n

A wonderful, creative, and delightful family circle and a life in the Society of Jesus with many friends and many amazing role models, peppered, of course, by the inevitable parade of characters Jesuit history filled with examples of how to do things well, and mystifying examples along the way of what not to do New Jesuits and old Jesuits alive with the spirit of Ignatius

And most importantly a grateful and grace-filled remembrance of the chorus of unsung and grand heroes who have dotted a Jesuit’s life. Some were instrumental in leading us to God; some gave us the inspiration, direction, and support for our apostolic works. Others were simply bizarre beyond belief but have provided a lifetime of stories and mirth, as well as unimpeachable proof for our capacities of endurance and God’s amazing grace. In reflective remembrance, we praise God in happy moments, in difficult moments we seek God, in quiet moments we worship God, in painful moments we trust God, and in every moment we thank God. At the end of the day, we offer the prayer that all that we are, all that we do, may bless the name of the Lord.

SURPRISES Timothy J. Shepard, SJ I went to a public high school and had no lived experience with religious orders of men. After graduating, I got a job and some months later started a religious order search. I knocked on doors of various orders, but none, from my perspective, rang any bells. Then someone suggested knocking on the door of the Society of Jesus. I knocked and heard bells ring! There are two major decisions I have made in my life. The first, to apply to the Society, and the second, to apply for ordination. I have been grateful for the acceptance to the Society and the approval for ordination. The first 50 years have been most interesting — a journey with many marvelous surprises, and, overall, an excellent ride. I look forward to the next 50 years!

PEOPLE Robert J. Tillman, SJ When I look back over my 50 years as a Jesuit, I can’t help but think of all the amazing people I have met in the places I have studied, lived, and worked. These people have revealed God’s love to me. They have been colleagues, Jesuits I have lived with, teachers that have taught me, runners I have coached, students I have counseled, parents I have come to know, couples whose marriages I have witnessed, people involved in Beginning Experience ministry, those I have bowled with or played bridge with, and many more. The acceptance and affection I have experienced from these friends mirrors the acceptance and affection I feel that Christ has for me. Their love and generosity has helped me to know a generous and loving God. I find myself filled with gratitude as I reflect on the people I have come to know as a result of my life and ministry in the Society of Jesus. I thank God for calling me to this vocation and walking with me through so many different people.
