MARKET LOOKS FAVORABLE FOR 2015 NEWCOMERS By Nicole Russo Youth is coming back in vogue for spring – and just in time for a diverse group of stallions set to enter stud in Kentucky for 2015. After several years of breeders and buyers gravitating toward proven sires, younger stallions have been met with signs of favor in a resurgent bloodstock and sales market. There was clear evidence of the pendulum’s motion at last fall’s marquee Keeneland November breeding stock sale. Two of the top 10 covering sires by total sales were firstyear stallions of 2014, led by Orb, who was bested only by commercial juggernauts War Front and Tapit. Along similar lines, three of the top 10 weanling sires of the sale were first-crop stallions, with Bodemeister finishing second to Tapit. First-crop sires also continued to perform strongly with just-turned yearlings at last month’s Keeneland January horses of all ages sale, with three stallions in the top 10. “[The market is] pretty strong. Freshman sires are back in favor again,” said Grant Williamson, director of stallion nominations and sales at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky., which will stand champion Will Take Charge in 2015. The horse, a son of the late Unbridled’s Song, is advertised at $30,000, making him the most expensive first-year stallion in North America for 2015. “There were a few years there where people were running to sort of the proven horse,” Williamson continued. “But the market’s definitely looking a little more favorable for people, and they’re jumping straight back onto the freshman sires.” Among the top five stallions by mares bred in 2014, two of those, Violence and Flat Out, were first-year stallions. Spendthrift Farm, which stands Flat Out, has four additions at its Lexington, Ky., base, all Grade 1 winners, this season. “The market is very open to these firstyear horses,” Spendthrift stallion sales manager Mark Toothaker said. “People are back in the game with breeding mares to first-year stallions. We had a very good year last year, and we’re hoping for every bit as good a year – or better – this year.” Champion Will Take Charge won 7 of 21 career starts, winning or placing in 13 stakes, for earnings of $3,924,648. Unplaced in the 2013 Triple Crown series, Will Take Charge came alive in the second half of the season, winning the Travers Stakes, Clark Handicap, and Pennsylvania Derby, and finishing second by a nose in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, to claim a divisional Eclipse Award. He returned last year to win the Oaklawn Handi-

Will Take Charge is out of multiple Grade 1 winner Take Charge Lady, Kentucky’s reigning Broodmare of the Year. She also produced Grade 1 winner Take Charge Indy – about to enter his second year at stud – and is the second dam of champion Take Charge Brandi. “[Will Take Charge is] everything you’re looking for in a horse,” Williamson said. “He could get two turns; he ran against the best; he performed admirably over three seasons. He’s by a very good sire, from a female family that’s just exploded the last couple of years. When you add that all up, and you put his physical on top of it, he’s a great choice.” Joining Will Take Charge at Three Chimneys is Strong Mandate (by Tiznow), who romped in the Hopeful Stakes as a juvenile. He is also from a solid female family; out of multiple Grade 1 winner Clear Mandate, Strong Mandate is a halfbrother to stakes performers and stallions Full Mandate, The Mighty Tiger, and Newfoundland. Spendthrift’s four additions – Cross Traffic (Unbridled’s Song), Goldencents
tom Keyser
(Into Mischief), Itsmyluckyday (Lawyer Ron), and Shakin It Up (Midnight Lute) – are all Grade 1 winners. Highlighting the group is Goldencents, who won the 2013 Santa Anita Derby before running unplaced in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. He rebounded in style, finishing first or second in nine of his 10 remaining career starts, all at a mile or less. That span included two victories in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile; the second pushed his earnings past $3 million. Goldencents now enters stud alongside his popular young sire, Into Mischief. “This is a horse we’ve been following along with from the time he was a weanling,” Toothaker said. “Like his sire, he’s got a very good hip, great bone, a deep heart and girth on him. He’s a very correct horse. We’re very excited to have him. Breeders have gone crazy for him. Basically, his book was full as soon as he crossed the line at the Breeders’ Cup.” Among the intriguing additions to Kentucky’s stallion ranks is Noble Mission (Galileo), a full brother to unbeaten champion Frankel. Lane’s End acquired a

Continued from page 3 majority interest in the horse, and will stand him in Versailles, Ky., in conjunction with breeder Juddmonte Farms for an advertised fee of $25,000, making him among the most expensive in his class. “You always try to start horses out at levels that are attainable to breeders, because they’re helping you make a stallion,” Bill Farish of Lane’s End said. “The response has been as we’d hoped.” Noble Mission blossomed late in his career, earning Cartier Award honors as Europe’s champion older male last year when he scored Group 1 wins in England, Ireland, and France and was Group 1placed in Germany. In addition to being a full brother to Frankel, Noble Mission is a half-brother to Group 3 winner and young Kentucky sire Bullet Train. Noble Mission is among several sons of international titan Galileo who enter stud in or relocate to North America for 2015. “With Galileo’s success and the number of top Galileos that are at stud [in Europe], it was bound to start happening,” Farish said. “You can only stand so many sons of a stallion in the same region.” Galileo has a second Cartier Award champion entering stud in Kentucky in Magician, standing at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in Versailles. Magician earned champion 3-year-old honors in 2013, winning the Irish 2000 Guineas and Breeders’ Cup Turf. He made another productive trip to the U.S. to finish second in the 2014 Arlington Million, and now hopes for similar fortune at stud in his adopted country. “As a classic-winning son of Galileo, Magician had obvious appeal in Europe,” Ashford manager Dermot Ryan said. “However, his win at the Breeders’ Cup was the best performance of his career so it made a strong argument for bringing him here. A son of Galileo that had such an outstanding performance in American conditions is a very desirable proposition.” Magician is part of a strong hand of young stallions for Ashford this year, which also has Verrazano (More Than Ready), a multiple Grade 1 winner on dirt in the U.S. and Group 1-placed in Europe on turf. “Coolmore is a global operation, so a horse like Verrazano has plenty of options,” Ryan said. “He has form at the highest level on turf, and More Than Ready is very well thought of in the Southern Hemisphere, so that is all in his favor when it comes to shuttling. He’s been very well received in America so far, so he will cover a big book of mares this spring and we will go from there.” Multiple Group 1 winner Declaration of War (War Front) stands his first North American season at Ashford after launch-

He is among a trio of Grade/Group 1 winners to cross the pond to stand in Lexington for the first time, along with Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Red Rocks (Galileo), coming to Calumet Farm from Italy, and Mr. Sidney (Storm Cat), coming to Walmac Farm from France. Two other Grade 1 winners, Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Mucho Macho Man (Macho Uno) and Arlington Million hero Real Solution (Kitten’s Joy), both enter stud alongside their sires, at Adena Springs in Paris, Ky., and Ramsey Farm in Nicholasville, Ky., respectively. Several other Grade/Group 1 winners or intriguing stallion prospects also enter stud in regional markets this year.
California Grade 1-winning millionaires Boisterous (Distorted Humor) and Jeranimo (Congaree) are among a quartet of new stallions at Tommy Town Thoroughbreds in Santa Ynez, Calif. The two turf standouts combined for 15 graded stakes victories during their careers. Boisterous, in particular, comes from an extended family known for producing top stallions. Notable relatives include Exclusive Native, whose offspring include Triple Crown winner Affirmed and
Kentucky Derby winner Genuine Risk. It is also the family of sires General Assembly, Out of Place, and Gold Fever. California also adds regally bred Stormberg (Storm Cat) at NexStar Ranch of Temecula, Calif. The winner is out of champion and blue hen Serena’s Song, whose graded stakes winners include Grand Reward and Harlington, both useful regional sires.
Florida Re-entering the landscape is Adena Springs South, relaunching with four young stallions in Williston, Fla. Among those is first-year sire Capo Bastone (Street Boss), winner of the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes. The horse was a $300,000 purchase as a stallion prospect out of the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky selected fall mixed sale. Del Mar Futurity winner Drill is one of two Grade 1 winners from only two crops sired by champion Lawyer Ron, the other being Itsmyluckyday at Spendthrift. Drill begins his stud career at Get Away Farm in Reddick, Fla. Uncaptured (Lion Heart) was Canada’s Horse of the Year as a juvenile in 2012, winning 6 of 7 starts, including a pair of

graded stakes at Churchill Downs. The Ocala Stud newcomer also won the 2013 Prince of Wales Stakes, the middle leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. Now in its second year of operation, Pleasant Acres Stallions in Morriston, Fla., continues to expand, adding a pair of stallions. Csaba (Kitten’s Joy) was a multiple graded stakes winner on dirt for his turf champion sire.
The region gets an infusion of sons of leading sire Tapit, with Grade 3 winner Bandbox entering stud at Northview Stallion Station in Chesapeake City, Md.; Grade 2-placed Tritap at Heritage Stallions in Chesapeake City; and stakes winner Winchill at Pointer Farm in Bernville, Penn. Grade 3 winner Super Ninety Nine, by Tapit’s sire, Pulpit, also comes to Maryland, standing at Country Life Farm in Bel Air for Spendthrift, which partnered with Country Life to launch the career of classic sire Malibu Moon. Heritage Stallions, established last year, also adds a son of Galileo in Seville, set to stand his first North American season after beginning his career in Chile. The German-bred was a Group 1 winner in Australia and Group 1-placed in three European countries.
New York Alpha (Bernardini) was a multiple Grade 1 winner at Saratoga Race Course, taking the Travers Stakes in a dead heat and the Woodward Stakes the following season. The millionaire won or placed in six other stakes in the state. Alpha returns to familiar territory to launch his stud career at Sequel Stallions in Hudson, N.Y., for owner-breeder Darley. Grade 2 stakes winner Central Banker (Speightstown) made headlines when he was purchased for $400,000 last fall, becoming the most expensive stallion prospect sold at the Keeneland November sale since 2000. He will enter stud at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds.
Other regions ◗ Calumet Farm has seen a rapid expansion of its stallion operation under the ownership of Brad Kelley, who assumed control of the historic operation in 2012. This year, Calumet will stand stallions in five states, as well as Canada
and Ireland. Among those is first-year stallion Vertiformer (Dynaformer) at Poplar Creek Horse Center in Bethel, Ohio. Vertiformer, a stakes winner in France and graded stakes-placed in the U.S., has close ties to several other young sires. He is a half-brother to Declaration of War, and both are out of a half-sister to Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags, whose first weanlings and yearlings have been favorably received. ◗ The most accomplished newcomer in Canada is Grade 2 winner Rookie Sensation (Unbridled’s Song), entering stud at Adena Springs North in Ontario. ◗ Ive Struck a Nerve (Yankee Gentleman), who sprang a 135-1 upset in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes in 2013, returns to the state of his biggest victory to stand at Peach Lane Farms in Opelousas, La. ◗ Mr. Besilu (A.P. Indy) made headlines when selling for $4.2 million to Besilu Stables at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale based on his outstanding pedigree; his dam, multiple Grade 1 winner and millionaire Balance, is a half-sister to Horse of the Year Zenyatta. Mr. Besilu went winless in seven starts, and now enters stud at Eureka Thoroughbred Farm in Fredericksburg, Texas.

SONS OF TAPIT ENTER STUD DUTY
barbara D. Livingston
Grade 1-placed He’s Had Enough is among eight sons of leading sire Tapit set to debut at stud in 2015. He’ll stand for a $5,000 fee.
By Joe Nevills After a record-setting year on the racetrack and in the auction ring, the demand for progeny of leading sire Tapit has never been higher. That enthusiasm is now starting to carry over into the stud barn. At least eight sons of Tapit will debut at stud in North America in 2015, entering at all points on the breeding market’s spectrum. These new arrivals – along with other sons of Tapit who entered stud in previous years – will go a long way in establishing Tapit’s reputation as a sire of sires. While Tapit already stands for the highest advertised fee in North America, $300,000, his success or failure at transferring his ability at stud to future generations could steer his rate in the future and help determine his place all time among top sires. “I think everybody wants a Tapit,” said
David Fiske, racing and farm manager for Winchell Thoroughbreds, which raced and still owns a significant interest in the 14-year-old son of Pulpit. “I don’t have a whole lot of close association with the other stallions that are standing around town and how much demand there is for the sons of other stallions, but I do know there is incredible demand for sons of Tapit, just given the number of phone calls I get every week, the amount of interest we had in” – a Grade 2-winning Winchell homebred – “Tapiture last year.” The sons of Tapit headed off to stud in 2015 are Grade 2 winner Flashback at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in Kentucky; Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up He’s Had Enough at Woodford Thoroughbreds in Florida; Grade 2 winner Honorable Dillon at Rockridge Stud in New York; Grade 3 winner Bandbox at Northview Stallion Station and Grade 2-placed Tritap at Heritage Stallions in Maryland; stakes winner Winchill at Pointer Farm in Penn-
sylvania; stakes winner Tidal Volume at Poplar Creek Horse Center in Ohio; and graded stakes-placed Moro Tap at Double Infinity Ranch in Texas. Those newcomers will join Kentucky stallions Concord Point, Tapizar, and Trappe Shot; Florida stallion Rattlesnake Bridge; and former Kentucky resident Hansen, who stood one season at Ashford Stud before being sold to stand in Korea, among the horses tasked with carrying on the Tapit sire line. “You always want to get in on something that’s on the rise, and it certainly helps when you have Tapit doing what he’s done,” said Matt Lyons of Woodford Thoroughbreds. “People have seen what Tapit did, starting from humble beginnings to make it all the way to a $300,000 stud fee.” He’s Had Enough will stand his debut season at Woodford Thoroughbreds for

Continued from page 14 an advertised fee of $5,000. Lyons said he plans to use Tapit’s success as a template for his own stallion’s matings. “One thing that I liked about [He’s Had Enough] was that he’s free of Storm Cat,” Lyons said. “We know how well Tapit has done with mares from the Storm Cat line, so a Tapit horse that was a good 2-yearold with an exceptional female family that’s free of Storm Cat really was very appealing for us.” Robin Murphy of Poplar Creek Horse Center campaigned Tidal Volume, a member of Tapit’s first crop, herself and said Tapit’s ascent at stud throughout, paired with expanded gaming in Ohio, compelled her to get a stallion-worthy ontrack résumé under her horse. Tidal Volume earned a victory in the Temperence Hill Stakes at Louisiana Downs and won on dirt, turf, and all-weather surfaces. Tidal Volume will stand the 2015 season for $3,000 and already has proven to be the most popular stallion on Murphy’s 12-horse roster. “Tapit has helped me tremendously with this horse,” Murphy said. “Right now, for a horse in Ohio, the average stallion has [a book of] 7.8 mares, and it’ll get better. Retiring him, I was hoping realistically to get 40 mares for him for the whole year. Right now, it’s not even Feb. 1, and I have 45 mares already contracted to him.” Murphy said Tapit’s ability to stamp his foals with his signature gray coloring has been another helpful marketing tactic for Tidal Volume. While Tapit has proven that his best runners don’t have to be gray, such as champion Untapable and Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist, seven of his eight sons headed to stud in 2015 are registered as gray or roan. “The thing about Tidal Volume is after I got pictures taken of him, I took his picture, and I put it right next to Tapit’s conformation shot, and they’re built just alike – the way their neck comes out and their top line,” she said. “They compare amazingly. I was so excited when I saw that.”
barbara D. Livingston
Grade 2 winner Flashback is the only son of Tapit retiring to Kentucky in 2015. The 5-year-old horse will stand for $7,500 at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in Lexington.

BACK IN THE SADDLE JOHN P. SPARKMAN Funny how success changes attitudes. The Northern Dancer male line spent the 1990s and most of the first decade of the 21st century completing its conquest of the globe, while retreating on the continent of its birth. Of course, Northern Dancer himself was born in Canada and first achieved fame through his victories in the 1964 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, and he led the sire list in England four times but only once in North America. That perhaps was largely because so many of his best yearlings were purchased to race in Europe by the Coolmore partnerships and later the Maktoum family, but enough of those good sons returned to stand in America to maintain a healthy percentage of Northern Dancer’s male-line descendants in American stud barns. Once American breeders turned away from foreign-raced turf performers when Coolmore and the Maktoums temporarily reduced their participation in American auction markets in the early 1990s, however, American breeders restricted their affections to the more dirt-oriented Storm Cat and Deputy Minister branches of the Northern Dancer line and to the branch of aging three-time leading North American sire Danzig. Other Northern Dancer lines, including that of the Ireland-based Sadler’s Wells, who was in the midst of a historic reign in England, were deemed too turf-oriented. Then in 2009, Rachel Alexandra happened. American breeders mostly had ignored and rationalized the 2002 sire championship of El Prado, by Sadler’s Wells, as an aberration, a one-off event that had little bearing on the rapid rise of the Mr. Prospector male line and the emergence of A.P. Indy as a powerful force in American dirt racing. Rachel Alexandra’s undefeated Horse of the Year campaign in 2009, however, did more than capture the hearts and minds of American women. It proved that her sire, Medaglia d’Oro, who had a big hand in El Prado’s championship year, was an important sire and that the male line of Sadler’s Wells might have something to say about American racing after all. Medaglia d’Oro has continued to prove his worth since that brilliant first crop, and in 2013, another son of El Prado, the 2004 champion turf male Kitten’s Joy, ascended to the top of the stallion tree, despite the fact that all five of his 2013 Grade 1 winners
niKKi sherman
Galileo’s classic-winning son Magician begins stud duty at Ashford this year. earned their stripes on turf. Thus, it is no surprise that sons and grandsons of Sadler’s Wells have become far more popular and more numerous in American stallion barns in the last few years, especially sons of Sadler’s Wells’s successor as the best sire in Europe, Galileo. The winner of 6 of 8 starts, including the Epsom and Irish derbies, Galileo has led the English sire list five of the past six years. The first son of Galileo to arrive was Cape Blanco (out of Laurel Delight, by Presidium), who capitalized on his 2011 champion turf male Eclipse Award by standing at Coolmore’s American outpost at Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky. Although much of his pedigree was unfamiliar to American breeders, there was a lot to like about Cape Blanco’s race record if breeders could look past their prejudice against foreign turf runners. He was undefeated in three starts at 2, including Group 2 and Group 3 events, and though he had won the 1 1/2-mile Irish Derby at 3, his best form that year was in the 1 1/4-mile Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes, where he beat Rip Van Winkle, another son of Galileo, by 5 1/2 lengths. Cape Blanco had won all three of his American starts at 4, the Grade 1 Arlington Million, Man o’ War, and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, but missed the Breeders’ Cup because of injury. He bred more than 100 mares each of his first three seasons before being leased to Japan for the 2015 breeding season. Galileo’s son Midas Touch (Approach, by Darshaan), who had finished second to
Cape Blanco in the Irish Derby, arrived at War Horse Place in 2013, followed by another Irish Derby winner in Treasure Beach (Honorine, by Mark of Esteem), who also won the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park, to Pleasant Acres Stallions in Florida in 2014. This year, Galileo’s champion son Noble Mission (Kind, by Danehill) is one of the headliners of the new crop of stallions retiring to stud, taking up duties at Lane’s End. A year-younger full brother to the undefeated Frankel, Noble Mission spent much of his racing career in the shadow of his magnificent sibling, and it was not until his fourth season in training that his connections figured out the best way to utilize his speed. Second in his only start at 2, Noble Mission won his first two starts at 3, including the listed Newmarket Stakes at 1 1/4 miles, but spent most of the next two years running well in good company while giving the distinct impression that he possessed more talent than his race record showed. Always more tractable than his headstrong brother, Noble Mission came into his own when he was allowed to roll along in front under new rider James Doyle. Noble Mission swept to four straight victories, including the Group 3 Gordon Richards and Huxley stakes and the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (via disqualification), and closed his championship season with a stirring victory in the Group 1 Champion Stakes on British Champions Day.

Continued from page 18 Physically, Noble Mission is much more a “Northern Dancer type” than Frankel, who is a bit plainer and takes more after his broodmare sire, Danehill. In the Tattersalls Gold Cup, Noble Mission defeated another son of Galileo, Magician, who had scored a surprise victory in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Turf. Also the winner of the 2013 Irish 2000 Guineas, Magician (Absolutelyfabulous, by Mozart) has replaced his paternal halfsibling Cape Blanco in the stallion barn at Ashford for the 2015 season. An attractive, close-coupled horse, Magician looks a speedier type than Cape Blanco and, indeed, won his races with a striking turn of speed from off the pace. At least two other sons of Galileo, the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Red Rocks (Pharmacist, by Machiavellian) and the Australian Group 1 winner Seville (Silverskaya, by Silver Hawk), will stand in America this year. Red Rocks had stood in Italy since 2010 before transferring to Calumet Farm this year. Seville also ran second in the 2011 Irish Derby to Treasure Beach before continuing his career in Australia and will stand his first season at stud in 2015 at Heritage Stallions in Maryland. Noble Mission’s three-quarter brother Bullet Train, by Sadler’s Wells out of Kind, by Danehill, preceded him to stud in America and will stand his third season this year at Crestwood Farm. Bullet Train won the Group 3 Lingfield Derby Trial but spent much of his career utilizing his considerable speed as a pacemaker for illustrious brother Frankel. With El Prado now deceased, Bullet Train joins the proven graded stakes sires Perfect Soul (Ball Chairman, by Secretariat) and Sligo Bay (Angelic Song, by Halo) as sons of Sadler’s Wells in North America. Of course, the success of Medaglia d’Oro and Kitten’s Joy has produced something of an explosion of the El Prado branch of Sadler’s Wells in American stud barns. In addition to those two, El Prado’s sons Artie Schiller, Fort Prado, Paddy O’Prado, and Singing Saint all stand in Kentucky or Canada. Add in Medaglia d’Oro’s sons Atreides (a newcomer for 2015), Violence, and Warrior’s Reward, as well as Kitten’s Joy’s sons Csaba and Real Solution, and it is apparent the Sadler’s Wells male line now accounts for a substantial percentage of the shrinking American population of Thoroughbred stallions. Results matter. Sire lines cannot endure, however, without representation to produce those results, and the Sadler’s Wells male line at last is getting a chance to succeed in America.
