Lobo Skiing - Team Notes About the 2015 Lobos The 2015 Lobos return 14 letter winners from last year’s squad which finished third at the NCAA Championships. Those numbers include at least three returners in each discipline, male and female, and a high of five returners in the women’s alpine team. The Lobos return 10 of their 11 All-American runs from a year ago as well, including double All-Americans Eva Sever Rus and Sean Horner. The only All-American gone from a year ago is Armin Triendl, who not only was a first team All-American in the giant slalom but a first team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American. Joining the 14 returners are redshirt Christian Otto, who lettered for three years in Nordic before an injury sidelined him in 2014, and nine rookies to collegiate racing. Last year the Lobos picked up a team title, its first since 2011, winning the Jade Enterprises/Lobo Invitational. UNM never finished lower than third in any single meet during the season in 2014, and had its best national finish since 2009 with a third place NCAA showing. The Lobos picked up plenty of honors along with way with nine athletes earning 11 AllAmerica honors, nine All-RMISA honors, six RMISA skiers of the Week, the RMISA Men’s Alpine MVP, the RMISA Women’s Nordic Athlete of the Year, and a national champion in women’s Nordic freestyle. Last Meet The Lobos finished third at the RMISA/NCAA West Regional Championships in Anchorage, Alaska. The result was a solid response to finishing fourth in the Seawolf Invitational at the same site just two days earlier. The third place finish was UNM’s

Lobo Skiing - Team Notes Cont... second-best finish of the 2015 season after winning the Jade Enterprises/UNM Invitational. The Lobos picked up five podium finishes, including a pair of wins for Emilie Cedervärn. Eva Sever Rus and Mateja Robnik had second place finishes, and Aku Nikander had a third. Do You Believe in Miracles? Yes! Head coach Fredrik Landstedt has announced his 12-member squad for the NCAA meet, and the Lobos are one of seven schools that will send a full contingent of 12 skiers to the championship (all six NCAA RMISA schools are sending 12, as is Vermont. Middlebury and Dartmouth will have 10 each). Mateja Robnik (women’s alpine) and Mats Resaland (men’s Nordic) are seniors and lead the way as each are appearing in their third NCAA Championships.

Joining Robnik on the women’s alpine are NCAA newcomers Sydney Staples and Sara Ottosson, while UNM’s triumvirate for men’s Nordic was identical to last year as Aljaz Praznik and Aku Nikander were both going for the second time. However, Praznik has come down with flu-like symptoms, and UNM used its late scratch to add Christian Otto to the squad. Otto will be competing in his fourth NCAA Championships after going in 2011, 2012, and 2013. For the women’s Nordic, Eva Sever Rus will be make her second trip to the NCAAs after winning the freestyle title last year. She is joined by first timers Emilie Cedervärn and Jessica Gnüchtel. For men’s alpine, Sean Horner will be making his second appearance, with Juho-Pekka Penttinen and Carl-

Johan Öster making their first. Penttinen is the only senior making his first trip to nationals. Lobos Net Seven on All-RMISA Lists Seven Lobos were named to the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association All-Conference team today, including three first teamers in Emilie Cedervärn, Mats Resaland and Mateja Robnik. Joining them on the second team were Sydney Staples, Aku Nikander, Aljaz Praznik and Eva Sever Rus. Denver led the way with 10 All-RMISA student-athletes, and Colorado and Utah had nine each. Alaska Anchorage and Montana State each had three. The All-RMISA teams are selected based on the final NCAA Qualification lists, which includes the regular season races and the RMISA Championships. The first five on the list are named first team and then next five are second-team selections. The RMISA MVPs, which were determined and announced at the RMISA banquet in Alaska on February 26, were based on the four regular season meets, totaling 10 races for alpine and eight for Nordic. Denver’s Sebastian Brigovic was awarded the Men’s Alpine MVP Award and teammate Monica Hübner won the Women’s Alpine MVP. On the Nordic side, Colorado’s Rune Oedegaard was named Men’s Nordic MVP and Utah’s Veronika Mayerhofer took home the Women’s Nordic. Resaland, Cedervärn and Robnik earned first team honors for the first time in their careers. Resaland, a second team pick last year, was UNM’s top point scorer on the season for men’s Nordic with 250, and he broke the 1,000-point mark in his career at the RMISA Championships. He picked up a win on the season in the freestyle at the Jade Enterprises/UNM Invitational a win that marked the only time all season in 10 races that Rune Oedegaard or Mads Stroem of Colorado didn’t win. Cedervärn has been a revelation, winning her last four races. Had she competed the opening weekend she had a shot at RMISA Nordic MVP honors. Still, she led the entire team for the season with 293 points, and she became the first Nordic in school history to sweep the freestyle and classical at an away event, and she did it twice in the span of six days. Robnik, a second team pick last year, has led the alpine squad with 219 points, scoring in eight of her 10 races on the season. She picked up a win at the Seawolf Invitational in the giant slalom, and then came in second in the slalom at the RMISA Championships. Among the second team selections, Aljaz Praznik and Sydney Staples earned their first honors. Praznik has been rock steady throughout the season, although he struggled with a shoulder injury in Alaska that hampered him a bit. Yet, he is the only other person not named Oedegaard, Stroem and Resaland to finish in the top two this season (coming in second behind Resaland in the Jade Enterprises/UNM Invitational). His 164 points were second-most on the men’s Nordic side. Staples entered the season with just one career top-10 finish, but raced her way to second team All-RMISA honors after scoring in six of eight regular season races and recording seven top-10 finishes. Staples earned herself her first career trip to the NCAAs with her breakout season. Joining Praznik and Staples on the second team were Aku Nikander and Eva Sever Rus. Sever Rus, a first team pick last season, earned second team honors this year after missing the first three races of the season. Sever Rus had a pair of podiums and is the reigning NCAA freestyle champion.

3

Nikander missed more time than Sever Rus, missing the opening six races of the season while back in Finland. He arrived in time for the last two meets, scoring 105 points with a podium finish at the RMISA Championships. Nikander is the reigning U.S. Open champion. He’s Back Aku Nikander got back from Finland in time to join the Lobos on their trek to Alaska, skiing in the final four races of the year and gaining NCAA Championship eligibility. Nikander was the top Nordic for UNM’s men’s side in both the freestyle and classical at the RMISA Championships, finishing fifth in the freestyle and then third in classical. Nikander earned All-America honors last year but missed the opening three meets while attending to matters at home in Finland and taking online classes at UNM. Injury and Illness Have Hit UNM Hard, Even at NCAAs Along with Patrick Brachner and Karoline Søvik Myklebust, the Lobos have been hit hard by the injury bug, the ol’ illness bug and the not in the country-bug as well. Overall, the following races have been missed in the following disciplines: Men’s Nordic: Men’s Alpine: Women’s Nordic Women’s Alpine:

14 (Nikander 6, Wiltz 8) 12 (Brachner 9, Öster 3) 11 (Cedervärn 2, Gnüchtel 2, Sever Rus 3, Nord 4) 6 (Myklebust 6)

Now, the illness bug has reared its head in Lake Placid, as Aljaz Praznik was a late scratch due to flu-like symptoms, and taking his place is graduate student Christian Otto, who will get to compete in his fourth NCAA Championships. Thirteen Named To National Collegiate All-Academic Ski Team Thirteen Lobos were among the 276 student-athletes from 29 colleges and universities that were named to the 2015 National Collegiate All-Academic Ski Team, announced and awarded by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association. One of, if not the, most difficult academic teams of its kind nationally, to make the team student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.5 grade point average in the classroom and have competed in one of three NCAA Regional competitions. For the Lobos, Kyle Beling, Jessica Gnüchtel, Taylor Grauer, Sean Horner, Mark Miller, Anni Nord, Christian Otto, Sara Ottosson, Juho-Pekka Penttinen, Mats Resaland, Mateja Robnik, Eva Sever Rus and Sydney Staples all were named to the team. Nine of those student-athletes (Gnüchtel, Horner, Otto, Ottosson, Penttinen, Resaland, Robnik, Sever Rus and Staples) are competing for UNM this week at the NCAA Championships. New Mexico’s 13 honorees was tied for sixth nationally behind Alaska Anchorage (20), Williams College (19), Utah (15), Northern Michigan (14) and New Hampshire (14). Alpiners Get Some International Competition Three Lobos went to Spain for the World University Games. Juho-Pekka Penttinen, Sean Horner and Courtney Altringer competed in the World University Games in Granada, Spain over the long break in the season. Sever Rus to Defend National Title All of last season (and parts of this season) race results misspelled the name of Eva Sever Rus (combining her two last names, which belong to her mom and dad, into Severrus), but there was no mistaking her on March 8, 2014 when she won the 27th individual NCAA National Title at UNM.

www.facebook.com/UNMSki

Sever Rus, who won the title by 1.8 seconds over the 15K course, was New Mexico’s 17th skiing national champion, and the 10th on the women’s side. She was the first freestyle national champion since Ivana Radlova in 1993, and the first Nordic national champion since Kristina Strandberg in 2000, who won in Classical. Sever Rus will attempt to become the first Lobo in Nordic history to repeat as an NCAA champion, and only the second ever. Malin Hemmingsson won the 2009 and 2010 NCAA slalom titles (she also won in 2007). Her biggest obstacle might be her teammate Emilie Cedervärn, who has won four straight races Speaking of Four Straight Wins and Cedervärn Emilie Cedervärn has done something no Lobo skier had ever done before, and that’s sweep the freestyle and classical races in a non-home meet. She finished off the feat on Thursday, February 25 at the Seawolf Invitational in Alaska. Three days later she repeated the feat at the RMISA/NCAA West Region Championships. The four straight wins is the first time in school history a skier has won four consecutive races, and it tied her for first on the single season women’s Nordic wins list at UNM with Martina Stursova (2004 and 2005) and Ivana Radlova (1993), who each won four. She is now tied with Kjersti Stenberg (1982-85) and Heidi Sorensen (1983-86) for third place on the women’s Nordic career victories list with four. After the Fact, but Nikander is U.S. Open Champion When Aku Nikander opened the 2014 season with a win in the 30K FS at the Pat Miller Invitational in Utah, it showed that he was pretty tough in the longer races. He proved that again after the season, when he traveled to Alaska for the U.S. Open championships, winning the 50K Freestyle in just under 2 1/2 hours. While not an official collegiate win for Nikander, it capped off a brilliant first season with the Lobos where he recorded nine top 10 finishes, including five in the freestyle out of six races. Two Really Smart Guys Mats Resaland and Armin Triendl were both honored as first team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic AllAmericans in 2014, earning their way onto perhaps the toughest team to make, the CoSIDA at large team. That team encompasses the men’s sports of Fencing, Golf, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Lacrosse, Rifle, Skiing, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Volleyball, Water Polo and Wrestling. Triendl and Resaland joined Alabama golfers Cory Whitsett and Bobby Wyatt as the only teammates from the same school, let alone the same sport, to make the first team. Overall, there were 15 student-athletes on the first team. Twelve of those student-athletes came from one of the five power conferences or Notre Dame. Only UNM’s tandem and Grand Canyon’s Ivan Nechunaev were not from one of the five power conferences. Head Coach Fredrik Landstedt Head Coach Fredrik Landstedt, himself a former Lobo Nordic skier, is entering his eighth season as the head coach of the Lobo ski team and his 2oth season overall as he served as a student assistant coach and assistant coach before becoming the second head coach in program history the summer of 2007. With Landstedt at the helm of the program, the Lobos have finished fourth, third, third, seventh, eighth, sixth and back to third at NCAA Championships.
