Message from our Head Dear Parents

DATES TO DIARISE

This week we had the opportunity to listen to an assortment of songs and pieces during the termly Music Assembly. The programme was a lovely, wellbalanced selection of music that showcased the extensive variety of instruments taught at Herschel. The reading was taken from Colossians, Ephesians and the Psalms and included four verses all referring to the use of music in the Bible proclaiming the wonder of the Lord. Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord. Ephesians 5:19

Pre-Preparatory The Grade R classes had an exciting outing to the Science Centre in Observatory. They learnt how to make different colours and they enjoyed the building site where they built walls with foam blocks.

Foundation Phase Grade 1 The Grade 1s went on an outing to the College of Magic on Tuesday, 13 September. At the Magic Classroom, the girls had a variety of activities all about light, colour and optics. They got an opportunity to mix colours and experiment with different shapes and light forms. A magic show ended off a fun and learning filled morning. Many thanks to all the Parents who assisted with lifting.

Stars of the Week! Well done to our Grade 1 – 3 Stars of the week.

Foundation Phase continued… Grade 3 On Friday, 9 September eight Grade 3 girls attended an Enrichment Workshop at Elkanah House. The girls spent their Friday afternoon with other children from SACS, Edgemead and Elkanah House, working in groups. The workshop focused on Mathematics and more specifically the concept of Measurement. There were four stations, which the children were expected to complete. One was building with Lego looking at perimeter, another was making play dough whilst dealing with the idea of capacity. There was a weighing station whereby they weighed different items on a balance scale and a scavenger hunt which involved working things out in meters and centimetres. The girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learnt a lot through play.

Intermediate Phase Grade 4 On Friday, 9 September, the Grade 4 girls attended a Science and Technology enrichment afternoon at Elkanah House in Blouberg. Elkanah, SACS and Herschel participated. The activities involved making experiments, building various structures playing and educational games in the computer lab. The girls enjoyed a fun and informative afternoon.

Intermediate Phase continued… Maths in Grade 4 The girls in Mrs Mozley’s Maths Group tested their fraction knowledge by making their own Fraction Dominoes. These were made using equivalent fractions and drawings representing fractions. The best part was playing games with the dominoes to see whether they actually worked.

Grade 4 Outing to Groot Constantia The Grade 4s visited Groot Constantia this week. The focus of the outing was transport long ago. After a brief history of Groot Constantia, the girls spent time looking at wagons and carts and completing a variety of activities. They also visited the manor house where they learnt about the ships that were used in the past. They had fun looking at and identifying the different parts of a ship and looking closely at paintings to spot the differences. We were lucky enough to have beautiful weather and all the girls thoroughly enjoyed the outing. A big thank you to all the parents who assisted with lifts to and from Groot Constantia.

Grade 5 iPad Lesson As a follow-up to the Rio Olympics, the Grade 5 girls have been writing newspaper articles on specific sportswomen of their choice. They made iMovies and interviewed their chosen sports stars.

Sparkle Centre Social Media sites, risks, and what parents should know Social networking is not as simple as it seemed years ago, where perhaps there were only one or two websites everyone made use of. Technology is vast and risky if not adequately managed. Teenagers are particularly targets for the mainstream of our society, and parents should be actively involved in terms of where they are going, who they associate with, and what they engage with on social media sites. It is impossible to know all the “in’s and out’s” but identifying the basics of why certain sites are popular, and what risks can occur if not used responsibly, can certainly make a difference between a positive and negative experience for your child.

What Parents should know: Most of these sites are for older teens 16 years and above, but younger adolescents are already using these sites. Safety is a concern as not everything is private. It is a myth that snapchat goes away, as anyone can screenshot or recover messages or pictures sent. Data remains data. Teens are obsessed with obtaining likes on their images or status updates, which they measure to “success”, their self-image or self-worth. Research has shown that creating the “perfect selfie” has been declared an illness. The danger in communicating with strangers can promote high-profile crimes such as kidnapping, murder and child pornography cases. Teens often broadcast from their bedrooms where numbers and location of addresses are exchanged. Young people can text to their hearts content as apps are free of charge, easily accessible and affordable. This adds to anti-social behaviour as they will struggle to put their mobile phones away. WhatsApp automatically connects you to all contacts in your address book on your mobile phone and encourages one to add more friends. Features of popular music mix and the embedded GIFs and emoji’s have some adult themes like alcohol and sexy images. Reckless and inappropriate conversations occur where swearing and sexting appears “okay”. Open grounds for cyber bullying to take place. Teens who often struggle with their own identity, suffer from a low self-esteem or self-confidence, can be a target for such sites. Keep communication channels open with your teen at all times. If you think that your daughter can benefit from a skills group to enhance her confidence and assertiveness with the current pressures adolescents face, or require guidance in terms of family relationships, please feel free to contact: Lara Stern BSocS (Hons) Clinical Social work Pr.
