A MESSAGE FROM OUR RABBI

Get Back! I have said in recent services that each Jewish month carries with it a distinct character and mood. I notice that the key English words that we associate with this new month, Tishrei - in fact, the central themes of this month have a common prefix: renewal, rebirth, return, repentance, and for some, recovery. In all cases, the English prefix demands a look or step back. The implication is that we once knew better, acted better, and now long for the right and ability to have a redo of the important aspects of our lives. Unlike other religious traditions, we don’t subscribe to the idea of original sin. A child is born pure and without blemishes that will inevitably come of time spent in the world; choices and experiences that will change a person’s record and character. We believe that there was a time when we simply were. We lived in balance and without shifts in ethics. We were infinitely amazed and overwhelmingly grateful. Was it in infancy or were we living that sweetly only yesterday before life challenged our ethics, our sense of wonder and our gratitude? We know that we have that capacity to reset our hearts, to refine our actions and to change the trajectory of our lives. Science and religion converge on that truth: We can change. Do you remember standing, swaying, holding onto one another during the holiday services and singing, “Hashiveinu (Turn us around!)” That was our call to God, and I would add, to our own souls. The Beatles prayed it a different way: “Get back! Get back to where you once belonged!” Renewal. Rebirth. Return. Repentance. Recovery. We can make these the guiding words of more than a Jewish month. They can be on our lips and minds every morning when we wake up to our blessings and to our capacities. L’shanah tovah! Again, I wish you a beautiful New Year. By Rabbi Ron Li-Paz

Tikkun Olam

Membership News

I was recently watching the Chabad Telethon and was moved by a comment made by Rabbi Moshe Bryski of Chabad of Agoura Hills. He stated, “The greatest of Angels cannot feed one slice of bread to a hungry person—only we can.”

This is always for VOS, as for all synagogues, the season of renewal of membership (and renewal in many other ways, but that’s another subject for another author!) Moreover, it’s a time for us to acknowledge our new and returning members who have joined our synagogue family. Following is the most current list, as of this writing, of our new and returning members, whom we welcome with open arms and hearts.

Wow, does that mean we are more powerful than the Angel in heaven? No, it refers to the fact that here on earth we not only have the ability, but the responsibility to give back and participate in Tikkun Olam, repair the world. At Valley Outreach Synagogue, we have so many opportunities to give back to the community, and not just to our congregation. We have programs that allow for feeding the hungry, sending letters and some of the comforts of home to our service men and women, buying shoes for needy school age children, offering help in setting up the mourner’s home during the memorial service so all mourners may attend the funeral, reaching out to the sick and disenfranchised through our Sunshine Committee, and the list goes on. Actually, if you have an idea to help the community that VOS can assist with, let Rabbi Li-Paz or Chaplain Nye know, and it will happen. As we enter the New Year, it is a chance to begin anew to build a better relationship with our G-d, with our families, with our synagogue, and with the community. Let us begin this New Year of 5777 with an open heart and more love and understanding about what our place in this world is and means. There will never be a better time to make this world a better place for all of us. Don’t allow prayer to be just something you hear in the synagogue. Make prayer from your heart. Believe that G-d hears our prayers and sees whether we are the best that we can be. G-d gives us the ability and power to help each other, to love each other and that is what we should be doing. Tikkun Olam, repair the world, our world. We must do it, not wait for divine intervention. May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year. Amen Jay Stein, Chairman, Religious Practices

Gladness & Joy As we embrace Rosh Hashanah and prepare for Yom Kippur, Simcha blessings continue to fill and enrich our lives. Violet and Larry Schlesinger attended a gala 80th anniversary in Long Beach on May 26 in celebration of the 1936 launching of the Queen Mary. They were extremely excited to meet and dine with Randolph Churchill (great-grandson of Winston Churchill) and Lord Watson, a member of Parliament. This affair also celebrated the making of the BBC Scottish TV documentary, "Mighty Ship at War: The Queen Mary" which the Smithsonian Channel aired on Aug 21. And yes, Larry was in the documentary which was an extensive interview as he served as a Military Police Officer on the Queen Mary in February 1944, transporting almost 20,000 troops to England in anticipation of the WWII Normandie invasion. Larry will celebrate his 95th birthday on October 11. We VOSians are celebrating with you, Larry! Mazel Tov and happy birthday! Ava Silversberg’s younger son Jordan and his wife Sari were expecting a baby on Oct. 15th - but baby Noah had a mind of his own and made his appearance on August 29th! He was born six weeks early and weighed 6lb,5oz. He was in NICU maturing and learning how to eat for almost four weeks and finally came home on September 23 weighing over 7 pounds! Ava is kvelling all over the place with Noah, her first grandchild. He is beautiful, wonderful, a true gift from God! Mazel Tov to the whole family! Thank you for sharing your Simchas! May your lives be blessed with an abundance of Simchas throughout the year! If you would like to share your Simchas with us, please send to [email protected] and be sure to write “Simchas” in the subject line. Thank you, Linda Kroll, Simchas Chairperson

Summer is over and with that came our first Sisterhood meeting at my home on September 1st. It was a lively group of women who were entertained by our own Wendy Levenson. She brought her guitar, copies of music, and instruments for all. We sang and sang and had a lot of fun. Thank you, Wendy for a fabulous evening! We also covered several items that were on the agenda. Chip Rudolph and Ethel Kaplan are planning interesting places for our Sisterhood to visit in the future.

During this Elul, the last month of the year, we were pleased to have Rabbi Ron Li-Paz as our guest . We were further honored to have Bronwen Li-Paz in attendance as well. Our Rabbi spoke of Elul as being a time of togetherness with God, family and friends. It is a time to share Jewish values, to give and ask for forgiveness and to apologize to those we have hurt. The Rabbi also explained our position as an independent reform synagogue. Rick Rice reported on his meeting with Adam Sussman of the newly formed Men’s Brotherhood. We share many mutual goals including, poker, fishing and other goals benefiting our temple’s progress.

Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure is a masterful meshing of the plots from two of the most well-known stories from the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle short stories. The audience is also presented with an interesting perspective on Holmes' two rivals; the evil Moriarty and the beautiful Irene Adler. Each of them outwits Holmes in various ways, but yet the contrast between their characters is very striking. At its heart, this is a mystery/adventure story that also incorporates elements of romance and humor involving the characters of Holmes and Watson meshed with themes that are not typically prominent in this type of production. Join us for a wonderful night of adventure. For tickets contact Sheri Albala

As we begin our rituals and preparations for the High Holidays, it becomes very clear how losses from this past year will affect the coming year. The loss of a beloved partner or friend can be very frightening and upsetting. Please know you are not alone. We have Rabbi Li-Paz and Chaplain Nye and, of course, family and friends who will reach out to help during such difficult moments. High Holidays are a time to review and renew your commitment to VOS and the promises you made to yourself to do mitzvot over the year. Did you check off all your promises? Did you sign up to become a member of the Bereavement Committee? Please consider joining our committee so that you, too, can reach out to fellow members of VOS when the need arises. Experience Tashlich with VOS at Zuma Beach in Malibu Tashlich is a long-standing Jewish practice performed on the afternoon of Rosh Hashanah. The previous year’s sins are symbolically “cast off” by throwing pieces of bread, or a similar food item, into a large body of flowing water (such as a river, lake, sea or ocean).

Please join VOS after Rosh Hashanah services on Monday, October 3rd at 4:00 p.m. at Zuma Beach. (Please car pool, if possible)

If you are coming from the east on the 101, exit the 101 at Kanan Road and turn left onto Kanan Road. If you are coming from the west on the 101, exit the 101 at Kanan Road and turn right onto Kanan Road. About half-way there, Kanan Road becomes Kanan Dume Road. Continue on Kanan Dume Road.

At Pacific Coast Highway, turn right (west) and go approximately 1.7 miles. Heathercliff Road, move into the left hand lane.

Once you pass

When you reach the traffic signal at Busch Drive (second street after Heathercliff Road), start looking to your left. About 20 feet after the signal at Busch Drive, make a left turn which will bring you to the parking area for Zuma Beach. You need to drive to the right to the entry gates for the fee parking lot. There is a per car fee of $10 to enter. After going through the pay gates, continue to the parking area near Life Guard Tower # 6, where we will meet.
