Why Buy LED Tape Lighting? It works where other lighting simply can’t LED tape lights will change the way you think about indoor lighting. These energy-efficient lights are ultrathin, flexible and compact, yet they deliver bright light. Suitable for both accent and task lighting, they can be installed anywhere you want to add drama, elegance and ambience to your interior space. The exceptionally versatile tape lights are available with warm or natural white LEDs in three light densities, or with red, green and blue (RGB) LEDs in two light densities to produce a near-endless array of colors. Straightforward to connect and install, the LED tape lights have a peel-and-stick backing for easy mounting and can be cut to length using scissors. System connections are made without soldering, using quickconnectors. Since the system uses 12 volts (after the power supply), it is safe to handle and more energy efficient than conventional lighting. All components are CSA, cETLus or cUL listed. The LEDs are rated to last 50,000 hours; five hours of use per day translates to 27 years of maintenance-free lighting.

Power supply

Choosing the wattage of a power supply is determined by the length of tape lighting being used, its LED density and how the lighting will be configured. A straight-run layout uses single or multiple strips in series powered only at one end of the LED strip. A center-feed layout powers two equal legs of tape lighting from a central position; a loop-back layout has both ends of the LED tape powered simultaneously. For array layouts, where several unequal lengths of tape are to be powered from one end, consult the power supply chart on our website. Manual dimmer

LED Dimmer Switch To let you fully control the light intensity, you may wish to add a dimmer to your LED lighting. Wired between the power supply and the lighting, this dimmer has a rotary knob to manually adjust the light intensity from 0 to 100%. It can be surface mounted using screws or installed in a standard switch box (not supplied) recessed into a wall, useful where the power supply and wiring to the LED lighting are to be hidden within a wall. The dimmer is also available with a wireless touchpad that can be surface mounted on the wall or installed in a Touchpad dimmer standard switch box for remote operation from up to 100И away. The touchpad, with increment, decrement and on/off buttons, operates using an included type 27A (12V) battery. To independently dim lighting in separate areas using separate touchpads, order a dimmer with a touchpad for each area. Alternatively, you can program a single touchpad to simultaneously dim lighting in multiple areas. For this option, order a dimmer with a touchpad and as many additional manual dimmers as you need. 00U42.01 Dimmer, Manual 00U42.03 Dimmer w/Wireless Touchpad Wireless On/Off Remote Switch While not required to operate LED lighting, this wireless switch lets you remotely turn your LED lighting on or off*. Supplied as a receiver and a remote switch transmitter. You simply plug the receiver into a regular 120V outlet and plug a 12V power supply into its receptacle. The remote switch lets you turn the power on or off from up to 50И away. The switch can be mounted to a wall to operate like a traditional designerstyle light switch, or converted to a small hand-held unit. While the switch and receiver come pre-paired to operate together, the switch can also be programmed to pair with additional receivers (using one of four channel codes) for multi-zone lighting control using a single switch or multiple switches in different locations controlling the same set of receivers. The remote operates using two included 3V CR2016 lithium batteries. 600W max. Indoor use only. Switch slides out of the wall mount for use as a 00U41.90 Wireless On/Off Switch hand-held unit.

Based on full-power brightness, the lengths shown in the chart are totals for LED tape lighting; do not include connecting wires in your calculations. Exceeding these lengths will cause LEDs farthest from the power supply to appear dimmer due to voltage drop. A power supply capable of higher current delivery will not reduce the impact of voltage drop. Power Supplies (compatible with switches below left) Used for common installations, each comes prewired with a 60Й (1.5m) AC cord with plug end for use in a standard 120V outlet. The 12V DC output is equipped with a color-coded red/black wire connected to a removable terminal block for connection to your LED tape lights. If one of the LED dimmer switches (shown below left) is used with these power supplies, it is always connected between the power supply and the LED tape lights. Dimmable Transformer В This 60-watt, 12-volt DC output transformer is used with a hardwired dimmer* to control the brightness of white LED lighting. Suitable for existing or new construction, the transformer is designed to be wired directly to your home’s 120V power supply and placed between a compatible dimmer switch and the LED lighting. The dimmer is then used to control the brightness of the lighting. For safety, it has an automatic shut-off/reset in case of lighting overload or other fault. Casing is steel. cETLus listed, it comes with a wiring guide and a 1-year warranty. Not for use with RGB lighting. 00U41.76 AC Dimmable Transformer * Transformer is compatible with the dimmer below and other electronic low-voltage (ELV) and universal CFL/LED bulb (C·L) dimmers; please consult our website for a listing. STEP 1: Select a Light Density

Below: a small sampling of colors that can be produced with the color controllers.

RGB (Color) LED Tape Light Kits While all our tape lighting strips and connectors are available separately to let you order exactly what you want, the best value is with these tape kits, since they are pre-assembled economically at the factory and come with connectors for joining additional lengths of tape. Each kit supplies 8И (2.5m) of tape light, pre-soldered with a 48Й wire lead for connection to a power supply, a splice connector for in-line stripto-strip connections, a wire-lead connector to extend two sections around corners, plus two wire support clips and installation instructions. To join multiple kits, cut the pre-soldered 48Й wire lead from any tape being linked to the first and use the included splice connector to create a continuous run of lighting. Each light strip is backed with a hightack peel-and-stick adhesive, and can be cut to length (every 4Й for the 30 LEDs/m and 2Й for 60 LEDs/m). All RGB tape lighting requires a color controller for blending the red, green and blue LEDs into a custom color. A 12V power supply with enough wattage to suit the application is also required. 00U41.51 8И (2.5m), 30 LEDs/m Kit 00U41.54 8И (2.5m), 60 LEDs/m Kit 60 LEDs/m kit shown. Each kit contains: 8И tape light with 48Й wire lead, splice, wire-lead connector plus two wire supports.

RGB LED Tape Light by the Foot If you don’t want to use a kit, the tape is available by the foot, but you will need to buy wire and connectors separately. By-the-foot lighting is an economical option when adding a short length of lighting to a kit. For example, if you need 10И of lighting, instead of buying two 8И kits, order one 8И kit plus another 2И of lighting and use a splice connector to join the light strips. 0 0U41.52 1И (30cm), 30 LEDs/m, ea. 0 0U41.55 1И (30cm), 60 LEDs/m, ea.

STEP 2: Select a Low-Voltage Power Supply Each low-voltage power supply comes pre-wired with a 60Й (1.5m) AC cord with plug end for use in a standard 120V outlet. The 12V output is equipped with a color coded red/black wire connected to a removable terminal block for connection to your LED tape lights. Choosing a power supply is determined by the length of tape lighting being used, its LED density and how the lighting will be configured. For RGB tape, a straight-run layout using single or multiple strips in series powered only at one end of the LED strip allows the longest lengths of tape to be used. Other configurations are possible. A centerfeed layout powers two equal legs of tape lighting from a central position, a loop-back layout has both ends of the LED tape powered simultaneously, and an array layout powers several unequal lengths of tape from one end. For more information on these alternative layouts, consult the power supply chart on our website. watt 43 /4Й

STEP 3: Select a Color Controller RGB Color Controllers All RGB LED tape lighting requires a color controller to blend the red, green and blue LEDs into a custom color. Two models are available. The custom color controller/light mixer allows for a near-endless range of static colors and brightness levels. A separate dial controls the intensity of each color for precise control over the color mix. It can also be set to output white light. It is an excellent choice for anyone wanting to create a specific color. The 30-color wireless controller, with remote touchpad, controls the lighting from up to 100И away. It has an on/off switch and buttons to cycle through or dim the pre-programmed static colors, which also include variations of white. Additionally, it has six preprogrammed settings, with speed control, that control dynamic color-changing effects. The touchpad, which operates using an included type 23A (12V) battery, can be surface mounted or installed in a standard switch box. You can program the touchpad to control one or more color controllers. This allows you to independently control lighting in separate areas of the same building using separate touchpads, or simultaneously operate* lighting in multiple areas using the same touchpad. 00U41.96 Custom Color Controller/Light Mixer 00U42.11 30-Color Wireless Controller

The custom color controller/light mixer allows for a near-endless range of static colors and brightness levels. Custom color controller/light mixer

30-color wireless controller with remote touchpad

* When multiple RGB controllers are operated using a wireless touchpad, note that only static colors can be controlled or synchronized. Dynamic color-changing effects will not operate in synchronicity. When mounting a tape light strip under a cabinet or shelf with no lip to hide it, create a visual barrier by mounting trim strip molding in front of the light strip.

Tape light strip

Anywhere you have a change in strip direction, you need to use a wirelead connector to prevent kinking of the LED strip.

Project Example RGB lighting strips can be used anywhere standard white light can be used. Fully dimmable to let you control its intensity, it is an excellent choice for soft accent lighting.

Need More Connectors and Wire? If you are joining multiple strips of lighting, you may need more connectors and wire than are included in the kits. White and RGB connectors are not the same; white LED tape light uses two-conductor wires and connectors, while RGB LED tape light requires special four-conductor wires and connectors.

RGB

WHITE Splice connector: used to join two light strips for a continuous run of lighting. Wire-lead connector: for running tape light around a corner, or to connect adjacent strips. You can cut the wire in half, producing two wire leads with connectors that can be joined with a length of wire, useful when extending power wires or connecting tape light in another area.

LED Connectors and Wire Splice Connector Wire-Lead Connector 48Й Wire with Connector

48Й wire with connector: used as a wire extension from the power supply to the tape light or as a jumper cable between sections of tape light. Wire support clip: a simple wire holder with an adhesive backing. 22 gauge wire: supplied in a 26.2И (8m) roll in standard ribbon for RGB only, and in-wall rated formats for white and RGB. Flat ribbon wire is for use only in applications where the wires will not be hidden inside a wall; in-wall rated wire (with a PVC jacket) is suitable for all applications. 18 gauge wire: supplied as a 26.2И (8m) roll. A good choice to reduce voltage drop when using longer runs of wire. You can generally run about twice the length of 18 gauge over 22 gauge wire. For example, if your 60 LEDs per metre tape is 12И long, the maximum wire length from the light strip to the power supply is 10И using 22 gauge and 20И using 18 gauge.

Shown cut in half.

Screw terminal block: for secure connection of wiring for white or RGB lighting, these four-pin blocks accept wires from 14 to 22 gauge. A block can be cut in half to create two 2-pin blocks. Block can be surface mounted using a brad or small screw.

Want a More Refined Installation? LED Channels and Diffusers It’s easy to create a custom light fixture with these components and our LED tape lighting. The aluminum channels are available in three profiles and can be fitted with a polymer cover to conceal the LEDs and diffuse the light output. They are particularly useful where installed lighting will be visible, such as on the underside of a shelf or in a display cabinet, or to soften lighting to eliminate reflective hotspots on a nearby surface. The channels and diffusers can be cut to length using a fine-tooth handsaw and run in sequence to create a longer fixture. To enclose the channels, end caps are available in pairs (one cap has a hole for wires). Metal mounting clips are also available separately. Selecting a channel: To select an appropriate channel style, consider the installation. The surface-mount channel is an easy retrofit to an existing construction and can be affixed to a surface using metal clips (available separately) or double-sided tape. This channel can also be friction fitted into an 11/16Й wide dado. The flush-mount channel is a good option for new construction where a low-profile, flush-mounted light is desirable. The channel friction fits in an 11/16Й wide dado; the edges of the dado are concealed with the flanges on the channel. The channel can also be surface mounted using double-sided tape or metal clips (available separately). The corner-mount channel, designed to present lighting at a 45° angle, is useful for projecting light against an adjacent surface. These channels are intended to be surface mounted only, using doublesided tape or metal clips (available separately). Selecting a diffuser: The diffusers are available with frosted (translucent) or opal (milky) surface finishes. The frosted diffuser allows good light transmission, but the LED lights are somewhat visible. The opal diffuser provides more uniform light diffusion and good LED concealment. Note that each channel component is specific to the channel type; components cannot be interchanged. For example, diffusers and end caps for flush-mount channels cannot be fitted to surface-mount channels.
