HOURS OF WORK:

Such hours as necessary to carry out your duties. This will involve a minimum of 40 hours per week and may include working outside normal office hours at evenings and weekends and on public holidays.

SALARY:

circa £40,000 per annum

LOCATION:

British Fencing Head Office, Chiswick NB: The successful candidate will be expected to spend some time at the WCP Elite Training Centre, Leon Paul, Hendon and also undertake such travel as is necessary to fulfil the duties of the job

JOB PURPOSE The Coaching Development Manager is a critical role within GB Fencing from grass roots through to the Podium. The position is twofold: 1. To create a coaching development programme that empowers and supports a network of coaches and leaders that will help grow the sport at a grass root level; 2. To lead coaching excellence at every stage of the coach pathway which is central to the delivery of a highly successful world-class fencing programme. To achieve this, the Coaching Development Manager will be required to: 1. Undertake a formal review of the current British Fencing coaching development programme, including all British Fencing led workforce training opportunities; 2. Produce a recommendation report, prioritising changes to be made to the coaching development programme, and; 3. Implement a change management plan so that British Fencing can deliver its new coaching development programme. This role will contribute to the achievement of the organisations objectives and targets, through the following:

1. Increasing the number and quality of active leaders and coaches committed to continuous improvement; 2. Sharing British Fencing’s coaching expertise and experience, through the coaching networks in Great Britain (UK Sport, Sport England); 3. Continually apply customer insight to the coaching development programme, so that coaching meets the needs of all participants across the spectrum of fencing environments; 4. Raising the profile of coaching and co-ordinating a collaborative approach to coach education, recruitment, deployment and continuous improvement with partners across the sector; 5. Operating as a member of the Development Team and World Class Performance Team to a) provide support to the Development and Performance Directors, and b) act as the interface to Sport England, UK Sport (and other agencies and stakeholders), on all aspects of coach & workforce development; 6. Organisational responsibility for Elite Coach Apprenticeship Programme (ECAP), Aspire, Coach Connect and any other identified specific Coach Development programmes and courses, and; 7. Contributing and assisting the Performance Pathway Manager and Programme & Logistics Manager to create a world leading training and support environment that significantly impacts on current coaching standards and practices. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES •

To build a programme of generic and tailored professional development opportunities for the employed GB coaches and for those additional coaches supporting the GB fencing programme



Providing expert leadership, advice and guidance on coaching development for the Performance Director and Development Director



To lead and manage resources and budgets allocated to the area of coaching development and drive a culture of continuous improvement across the whole sport



Work with the British Fencing Talent Pathway Manager to ensure that coach development strategies are aligned with and developed in tandem with the fencer pathway



Benchmark the current British Fencing coaching programme against leading organisations in the sector, to learn from and apply best practice to the benefit of fencing’s coaching programme



Ensure market intelligence informs recommendations for change, thereby participant and coach insight underpins coaching investment

Work with the Development Team to ensure that coach development strategies are aligned with and developed in tandem with the organisations evolving insight on participant needs at a grass root level



Work with the Development Director to formalise a suitable training package for existing partners operating in the ‘activity holiday’ market



Work with the Development Director and relevant partners in the education sector to formalise a suitable coach development approach that delivers the right level of quality assurance for fencing in schools and colleges



Working with key partners, to build a programme for coaches operating in home nations, regions and clubs, to ensure that expertise contained within the British Fencing WCP is shared, helping to raise the standard of coaching across Great Britain



To work with coaching leads in the home nation associations to help develop clear strategies and pathways for Coach Development across Great Britain to drive up standards



To work closely with partners to ensure that British Fencing plays an appropriate role in contributing to, a) the delivery of the UK Coaching Framework in fencing, and b) any shared learning’s (with Sport England and other relevant partners) from British Fencing’s insight led approach towards coaching development



Ensure the production and delivery of operational plans and budgets meeting annual key performance indicators

PERSON SPECIFICATION Qualifications •

Educated to degree level (essential)



Advanced Coaching qualifications in Olympic Sport (desirable)



Sport Science and Sport Medicine Degree or other sporting or educational qualification (desirable)



Programme Analysis and Review (desirable)



Change Management (desirable)

Experience •

To have experience of working with high performance coaches



Experience or working with leading organisations in public sector sport, such as Sport England, UK Sport British Universities and Colleges Sport, Youth Sport Trust, Sporting Equals etc including the preparation of plans and reports



Experience of managing a budget



Proven experience in identifying, delivering and evaluating training needs and programmes of education



Experience of using customer insight to adapt service delivery, to improve customer satisfaction



Experience of establishing, building and maintaining highly effective relationships with external groups, organisations and/or individuals



Experience of developing and implementing innovative ideas and putting them into practice



A proven ability to communicate complex information, orally and in writing, in terms that are easily understood by a range of audiences and stakeholders

Knowledge •

Excellent knowledge of coaching and learning principles



Good level of experience and knowledge of elite sport



Understanding of a range of work procedures and practices, specialist knowledge of coaching strategies, UKCC, Sports Coach UK and master-class coaching

Knowledge and understanding of the needs of elite coaches and athletes, in particular those working at the Olympic Podium Potential and Podium level preparing international level competition



Knowledge and understanding of the needs of grass root coaches and new participants, in the context of highly effective community sport programmes



A strong awareness of published policies and procedures to meet UK Sport and Sport England requirements

Skills and Abilities •

An ability to motivate and support individuals and groups, together with practical experience of managing staff and multiple stakeholders



Excellent interpersonal skills, able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people and develop good working relationships in a complex stakeholder group



Ability to review and plan strategically, and to deliver change



Ability to manage time effectively and prioritise workload to meet deadlines



A positive attitude to Information Technology in carrying out the responsibilities of the post with working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Email
