Job Purpose:

To be responsible for leading, managing and developing a team of horticulturists, trainees and volunteers. To deliver excellent quality of garden cultivation/support service management, and the maintenance, delivery and implementation of programmes of work.

Dimensions:

Responsible for the management, maintenance and development of the Fruit, Vegetable and Herb Team and their areas of responsibility. Budget management. Responsible for the performance management and development of the team in accordance with HR policies and procedures.

Accountabilities 1.

Lead, manage, develop and motivate a team of Horticulturists, Trainees and Volunteers to deliver objectives and projects in line with the RHS strategy.

2.

Operational maintenance and organisation of horticultural/support service activity within own area of responsibility.

3.

Provide assistance to the Garden Manager with the planning, development and implementation of designated areas of the garden or support service (as above).

4.

Provide assistance to the Garden Manager with the planning and management of allocated budget.

5.

Liaison with Learning and Families Manager and other Team Leaders to achieve excellence in delivery of horticultural activity/support service.

6.

Guide and deliver the practical educational programmes to trainees, members of the public and staff.

7.

Ensure excellent levels of customer care are delivered by you and your team.

8.

Collaboration with other RHS staff and committees across a range of activities.

9.

Maintenance of records and dissemination of information.

10.

Assume the role of Site Duty Manager (as may be needed, dependent on site requirement) on a rota basis where you will be accountable for co-ordinating site emergencies, taking site closure decisions and taking a lead on setting high site standards of customer care.

To adhere to current Health & Safety legislation and best practice in accordance with the Society’s Health and Safety Policy Statement.

Excellent knowledge and expertise in general horticultural or relevant support service discipline RHS Level 3 Diploma in Horticulture or equivalent, or relevant support service qualification DESIRABLE: Good general management, planning, delivery skills

Relevant experience in managing horticultural projects and programmes, or garden support services Previous people management experience with the ability to educate, train and motivate others Good verbal and written communication skills.

SKILLS - RHS MANAGEMENT Leadership Measures an individual’s ability to lead their team at the right level as defined in their job description. To engage and motivate their team, cascade the necessary messages and communications from the top, be approachable and listen, feedback the ideas and views of their team to their manager and take responsibility for the work of their team and encourage cross team working. Resources Measures an individual’s ability to manage the resources within their control again, at the right level as defined in their job description. To understand what resources they have, to plan the use of these to meet team needs and objectives, to use them effectively and efficiently, to cut down on wastage of time, effort, cost etc, to review working practices and ensure they are appropriate and effective, to manage these resources when things change and to practice budgetary control.

SKILLS – CURATORIAL COMPETENCIES ESSENTIAL: Horticultural (Level 3) Uses specialist knowledge of plant collections, NCCPG custodian. Uses knowledge that covers a wide range of tasks from different areas of horticulture. Shares knowledge with others to support horticultural standards within department. Takes responsibility for recording plant collections information within own area. Applies a broad range of horticultural skills and understanding to activities that are often complex. Technical (Level 4) Applies and uses technical knowledge to plan and implement projects which are often complex. Selects the best specialist equipment/practices to be used in department. Sets the standards required for optimum usage of equipment/practices. IT (Level 3) Computer use includes Excel and PowerPoint for standard reports and presentations. Use of Word includes mailmerge, envelopes and labels. Interrogates database to retrieve customised plant record information and directly updates standard plant information. Health and Safety (Level 3) Ensures all members of the team are aware of and adhere to Health and Safety issues. Monitors and carries out risk or COSHH assessments before undertaking complex/non routine tasks. Ensures others use correct equipment and appropriate PPE for complex/non routine tasks. Resource Management (level 3) Carries out daily checks of specialist machinery, to ensure it is in a safe and useable condition Responsible for adjustments to environmental control computer settings. Monitors timekeeping in section. Monitors tools/equipment/resources used in section to ensure availability as required. Manages budgets for routine/simple projects. Public Outreach (Level 4) Relays information on varied topics to audiences of both professionals and amateurs e.g. lectures. Plans and writes editorial for publication within own work area. Undertakes presentation on radio or television regarding departmental work.

Technical Training (Level 3) Carries out master classes and student/staff walks, setting the departmental standard for all tasks Able to relate horticultural science to its practical application.
