Some of our International and visiting Thai students with the goodies from their Easter Egg Hunt!

Message from our Director of International Students Kia ora all It is a pleasure to host such a wonderful lot of short stay students with Mr Prateep, from BCC (in Bangkok) and PRC (Chiang Mai). Their English is really good and this makes communication and integration so much easier. A special thank you to all homestay families who stepped up to host. We are truly grateful for your hospitality. We appreciate there were some teething issues and some students took longer to wean themselves off social media and gaming and learn about what is acceptable in New Zealand. Overall, most have adjusted very well and are now part of their “kiwi” families. They have enjoyed visiting Stadium Southland, the Mayoral Reception, meeting Henry at the Museum and Ice Skating. The holiday trips to Te Anau, Queenstown, Wanaka and Dunedin will be exciting times to look forward to. Thank you to all the Hargest staff who have helped in so many ways - hosting, going on holiday trips, teaching special programmes, organising homestays and general organisation. There is a lot of coordination to ensure these exchanges run smoothly. As homestays, if you have any concerns, please communicate with us as soon as you can so we can deal with issues as they arise. Nga mihi Jenny Elder

Safety Tips when Keeping Warm over Winter

Ensure your student is warm enough. Many find our homes quite cold in comparison to their centrally heated apartments in China, Korea, Japan or Germany. Our temperatures are much colder for our Thai and Vietnamese students. Recommendations: • Use an electric blanket only to warm the bed.  Switch it off before you get in, so as to avoid overheating.  • Putting clothes or other things on the bed while an electric blanket is switched on could cause the blanket to overheat and may start a fire.  Never leave an electric blanket unattended for long periods of time when it is switched on. • Never drink in bed or place a hot water bottle in a bed when an electric blanket is in use. • Most students love the security of a hottie or a wheat bag. Please provide them with either or both. • Encourage them to wear warm night attire and invest in a pair of slippers or ugg boots.

Study Centre

This is held on Tuesdays in the Senior Campus Library. Teachers are available to help until 5.00pm. Encourage your International Student to attend.

Travelling Away???

A reminder that we must have the green “Permission to Leave Invercargill” form completed (with all the details) and returned to either Ann Kingsbury or Jenny Elder at least 2 weeks prior to the date of travel! This is for all out of town and overnight trips other than with your homestay family. JHC is responsible for all International Students while they are in New Zealand. If there is any emergency you must contact Mrs Elder (021 685 734) or Mr Wood (021 555 056) as soon as the emergency is dealt with. Please put these numbers on your phone for easy reference. DO NOT make any calls to their parents. This is the school’s responsibility.
