BURLINGTON COUNTY ATHLETES HEAD TO 2016 OLYMPICS Burlington County— August 3 to August 22, 2016— Our own from Burlington County who grew up, live, or attended schools in Burlington County are headed to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; South America. Some of these great athletes you may know but yet some you may not, so let’s meet these fine tuned athletes who are headed to the 2016 Olympics representing the USA. The following information and photos were provided from many sources through the Internet.

Lauren

Schmetterling—Lauren will be competing in the 8 person women’s rowing competition, she is sitting in 4 seat. Lauren was born in 1988 in Voorhees New Jersey and grew up in Moorestown, NJ attending Moorestown High School and graduating in the class of 2006. She continued rowing at Colgate University where in her senior year, she honored as an All–American athlete. After college she tried out for the under 23 team and didn’t make it. As with any All-American athlete not to be denied she was focused on training and returning to make the team. She began working on her skills and training at the Riverside Boat Club in Boston, Massachusetts. Under the guidance of Tom and Liane Keister, she spent long hours in the single and on the erg , an indoor rowing machine. She focused on increasing her fitness,. Under the Keister’s guidance and the rest of her support at Riverside she was ready to try again. In 2012 she returned to the US Rowing training center in Princeton, New Jersey. She began her transition from solo training to team training. She was greeted and accepted as part of a team made up of the most talented female rowers in the country. Lauren, during her career as a rower has earned many medals, 7 gold medals in the eight in other competitions all over the world, was part of the record setting them for the eight in 2013 at a time of 5:54:15. She was also part of the team of 8 that won their 10th consecutive world title on Lake Aiguebelette, France at the World Rowing Championships. In 2015 she was named the Fan’s Choice National Team Athlete awardee. She says the most influential people in her life have been her parents Eric and Lorie and former Riverside Coach Tom Keister. It’s not all work and no play and Lauren enjoys crossword puzzles, downhill skiing, and taking naps. No mater what occurs and amongst all the awards and hype of the eight, one thing remains constant—training comes first. I see in this crossword puzzle #ten and across two words for Lauren Schmetterling, OLYMPIC GOLD! (Continued)

Carli Lloyd—

If you live in New Jersey maybe you’ve heard the name. I’m sure if you live in Burlington County you know the name. She is without question the premier athlete and role model for all girl athletes in the USA. Some of the words used to describe her are tenacious, dedicated, hard working, exceptional ball control, team player, mental toughness, determination, stamina, tackling ability, energetic, clutch player, powerful striker, and superior athlete. Carli was born in 1982, and raised in Delran Township. She lived there with her parents Stephen and Pamela and has a brother, Stephen and sister, Ashley. She attended high school at Delran High School and played soccer under the late Coach Rudy “The Red Baron” Klobach. In her Senior year she scored 26 goals and 8 assist captaining her team to an 18-3 record. She earned many honors as a High School player, Philadelphia Inquirer Girls High School Player of the Year in 1999 and 2000, named to the Star-Ledger All-State First team in 1999 and 2000, as well as many others. She went onto attend Rutgers University from 2001 t0 2004. She played under Coach Glenn Crooks becoming the first Rutgers women’s soccer player to earn First-Team All-Big East for four straight years becoming the schools all-time leader in points 117. In 2013 she was inducted into the Rutgers Hall of Distinguished Alumni. Carli went on to play on the National Team for USA as well as Professional Teams. Her accolades and awards just kept rolling in. Algarve Cup Most Valuable Player in 2007; US Soccer Athlete of the year in 2008; FIFA World Player of the Year 2012, 2016; CONCACAF Women's Player of the Year 2015; CONCACAF Goal of the Year 2015; FIFA Women's World Cup Golden Ball 2015 and Silver Boot 2015; FIFA Women’s World Cup All-Star team 2015; FIFA women’s World Cup Dream Team 2015; FIFA Women’s World Cup Goal of the Tournament 2015; Women’s Sport Foundation Sportswoman of the Year Team Sport Award 2015; IFFHS World’s Women Best Playmaker 2015; FIFA World Player of the Year 2015, FIFA Women’s World Cup Runner-up 2011, Champion 2015 ; Olympic Gold Medal in 2008 and 2012. In the 2008 Olympics Carli scored the winning goal for the Gold against Brazil in overtime. In the 2012 Olympics Carli got her first hat trick scoring her goals in the

game against Mexico which they won 4-0. Again she scored the winning goal in the Olympic Gold medal round against Japan in a 2-1 victory. Finally in the 2015 FIFA World Cup she scored her second hat trick in the win against Japan. She became the first woman to score a hat trick in the final, and the first player, male or female, since 1966 final by a male at Wembley. Carli’s collection of awards and gold medals has not stopped yet. She is featured in the 2016 EA Sports FIFA video game series with her team mates in FIFA 16. She was ranked by EA Sports as the #1 women’s player. She and her teammates in 2015 were the first women’s team honored in New York City with a Ticker Tape Parade. She and her teammates were given the key to the city by Mayor Bill de Balsio as well as being honored by the President of the United States at the White House. Finally she received probably the most appropriate gift of the year, a key to the Evesham Township Recreational Facility. The blue barn, as many local call it, is where she trained and drilled day after day, working to improve or rehab from the numerous injuries over the years. Under the guidance of James Galanis she has trained, trained, and trained. Nothing fancy just basic drills kicking the ball against a wall and analyzing the kick. Doing 1000 sit-ups and 500 push ups a day. She silenced her detractors and nay sayers by kicking three goals in 16 minutes, the fastest hat trick in a World Cup final, leading in the win against Japan with a score of 5-2. At the 2016 Olympics if you hear a thump, thump , thump it’s not thunder; it just Carli kicking the ball against a wall so she and her teammates can bring home the OLYMPIC GOLD for the USA.

Matt Emmons brought home the gold from the 2004 Athens Olympic Games in Men's 50m Rifle Prone, but narrowly missed the mark in both Men's 50m Rifle Three Position and Men's 10m Air Rifle. In 2008, Emmons won his second Olympic medal, taking the silver in Men's 50m Rifle Prone. He also finished in fourth place, just out of medal contention, in Men's 50m Rifle Three Position. He also won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games in Men's Three-Position Rifle. Matt first began to shoot competitively in high school after Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) firearms instructor Paul Adamowski invited him to give the sport a try. He quickly became passionate about shooting and learned that it would be an excellent way to earn a scholarship for college. Though he tried his hand all three Olympic disciplines, it was rifle that kept his attention. In 1997, after a little over a year of shooting, one of Matt’s friends talked Matt's father into allowing him to compete in an international shooting event. It was there that he was able to rise above the field and catch the eye of USA Shooting by winning both the Men's 50m Rifle Prone and Men's 50m Rifle Three Position events.
