JULY 4 HOLIDAY Because the 4th of July holiday falls on a Saturday this year, the Activities Office will be closed all day on Friday, July 3. Happy 4th! Rosemarie Paeth, 326-8007

Living in a community association is a lifestyle that comes with it a voluntary agreement to follow the Rules and Bylaws. What is a community association? Basically, within the community, there is an elaborate contract between the property owners and the Association, the Association and the property owners, and the property owners between each other. Compliance to the Rules and Bylaws is NOT voluntary. It is required by the elaborate contract on which community associations are organized. Compliance relies on self-enforcement by every resident and property owner. In a community of any size, it is virtually impossible to assure, via inspections, that every property is in compliance with every Rule and Bylaw. In summary, compliance is everyone’s responsibility. By the way, I live in a HOA and serve on my board. During my short time at Royal Highlands, it has become very evident that RH is a wonderful community, filled with wonderful people. Thanks for making me feel welcome! From my perspective, the Number One Compliance issue in our community is SPEEDING . . . by contractors, visitors, and residents. If you see a garnet and gold Honda Civic going 25 mph, that most likely will be me . . . Please don’t pass me! Until next month, have a GREAT July!

READY FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT? Bored with playing cards, watching television, or reading books? Want to meet new people?

Greetings, Royal Highlands Residents!

Frank Pelot, 326-8344 We want YOU !

No, this is not a new social club. It’s a volunteer opportunity here at the Activities Office in the Rec Center. We need more volunteers, both male and female, to work at the window . . . selling tickets, sending faxes, making copies, answering questions, etc. You don’t need to work every day or even every week, and the hours are great . . . 9 am to noon. If you’d like more info, just give me a call. You can come observe for a day to see what a volunteer does and then sign up for a day of training. Rosemarie Paeth, 326-8007

SHERIFF’S TOWN HALL MEETING

Sheriff Gary Borders

ROYAL HIGHLANDS RENTALS Do you have a home you would like to lease or rent? Why not post it on the Royal Highlands website:

Tuesday, July 7, 6:30 pm Great Hall

www.royalhighlandspoa.com

Join us for an interesting evening with Sheriff Borders and his staff in the Great Hall on Tuesday, July 7. During the meeting, Sheriff Borders will discuss several programs that we offer to the citizens of Lake County, including Animal Services, Senior Watch, Safety Net, Vial of Life, and the Lock Box program. He will introduce his Command Staff, and they will explain their positions and duties at the Sheriff’s Office. After this, Sheriff Borders will open the meeting to Questions & Answers. The Sheriff’s staff will collect prescription medications that you no longer need and want to dispose of. Just empty all the pills/tablets into a plastic bag, and bring the bag to the meeting. Please do not bring medications in the bottles! The bags will be taken to the incendiary for destruction. Here’s a safe way to dispose of unneeded drugs and ensure that they don’t accidentally fall into the wrong hands. Note: After you empty those prescription bottles [small bottles only] and have removed the labels, bring those small bottles with you to the Sheriff’s meeting. We’ll have a special collection box for the small empty bottles. The SPCA uses these bottles for medications for the animals in their care and can save money if they don’t have to purchase bottles. Aspirin bottles are also usable, but please do not bring large vitamin bottles. And remember to remove those labels! Rosemarie Paeth, 326-8007

Although many areas of the website can only be accessed by residents with a password, the information about homes for sale or lease is open to the general public. The Activities Office frequently receives inquiries about homes for rent, and it would be nice to be able to refer them to our website. At this time, only one home for rent is listed there. Rosemarie Paeth, 326-8007

FOR ALL HOMEOWNERS WITH RENTAL PROPERTIES If you are a Royal Highlands homeowner who rents a property to others, please remember:

The tenant should come to the Activities Office with their lease and vehicle registration to obtain a bar code.

If this is a long-term rental, be sure the renter knows the mailbox number and has a key.

Please provide a Royal Highlands Telephone Directory in the rental home.

Notify the Activities Office if your renter leaves early or renews the lease. It is important that we are kept informed of early departures or lease renewals in order to manage the gate system and bar code information. Rosemarie Paeth, 326-8007

Wednesday, July 1 & 15, 3:30 pm Rec Center Card Room Open Houses: July 4-5 & 18-19, 11 am-3 pm Website: www.RoyalHighlandsByOwnerResales.com Welcome to the Royal Highlands Resale by Owners Group. If you are thinking of selling your home, we invite you to attend our meetings on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at 3:30 pm in the Rec Center Card Room. Our monthly fee is still only $10 to be on the website and an initial start-up fee of $80. This includes having photos taken of your home and a place on the website. We also advertise on various websites in the Central Florida, Ocala, and Orlando areas! Other services include having a flyer made for you to have printed at our discount printer and help with advertising. If you are listed with a realtor but would like the extra exposure of hosting your own open house, please consider joining us. Remember, if you are under contract

with a realtor, you are obligated to pay their fees! We usually have open houses on the 1st and 3rd weekends of each month. If you wish to view a home at any time, please contact the individual homeowner. Be sure to check our bulletin board in the Rec Center (across from the Library), where we list more information and also post a current list of homes for sale by owners. You can also find this listing at The Monarch Golf Club, in the infor mation box at the entr ance to our community, and online. Be sure to send our website address to your friends so they can check out our homes for sale. Thanks for your help! Betty Felton, 728-3640

ROYAL 4TH OF JULY 2015 Don’t sit home on the 4th of July! We’ve got some great plans for your Royal 4th Weekend so be sure to invite your friends and bring the grandkids. You can start the 4th of July with us at 8 am at the flagpole at the Rec Center for our flag ceremony. Then, get out your lawn chairs, and pick a spot along the Parade r oute. The Parade star ts fr om the inter section of Sir Churchill / Royal St. George’s Lane, tr avels down Royal St. George’s Lane to the Rec Center , tur n lefts onto Monarch Blvd., and goes to King John Street. The parade will then make a U-turn on Monarch Blvd., back to Royal St. George’s Lane. From there, the parade will turn left toward the Great Hall, and go all the way to Glen Coe Street, which loops around, and finally back to Royal St. George’s Lane. Bring a lawn chair and watch the parade. Members of our Car Cruisers Club will display their cruisers and specialty cars in the parking lot at the Great Hall right after the parade ends. Be sure to stop by and see them up close! After the parade, visit the Bocce and Shuffleboard courts to try your hand there. Members of these Clubs will show you how to play. For those interested in Pickleball, drive up to our new Pickleball courts, located outside the front gate by the Softball field. You can watch a game or try your hand at this latest addition to Royal Highlands’ sports. This year, we’ll have some fun activities for kids of any age. Hope you’ll join us! We’re featuring water games, bean bag races, bowling, and darts [safe ones]. J ust walk over to the grassy ar ea near the Shuffleboard cour ts to enjoy the competitions. Even if you don’t enter a game, it will be lots of fun to watch all the kids play. If you’re getting too warm outside, step inside the Rec Center where you can get some pointers about shooting pool and see if you can sink a ball in the corner pocket. In the Meeting and Card Rooms, the Crafters will have lots of unique handmade items on display and for sale, too. Members of the Garden Club will be there with information about their Club. Frank Hanley will have a very interesting display of Native American beading plus displays of stone tools, knife blades, and spear and arrow points. Come see beads sewn on buckskin the way it was done 200 years ago, using traditional materials used by the Central and Western Plains Indians. Getting hungry? The Iota Beta Sorority will serve lunch in the Great Hall, beginning at 11 am. The menu features hot dogs for $2 or a full lunch with hot dog, chips, and a soft drink for $3. For dessert, the Red Hat Society is offering ice cream served in Dixie cups for $1 each. While you’re eating, you can get answers to some of your questions from Luciana Maria Luisa Nina Panini and her psychic connection, the pig [puppet]. For mor e info about Liciana, see the article on the next page [Page 9]. Since the Great Hall is right there by The Monarch Golf Course, perhaps you would like to try your hand in their putting contest between 1 and 3 pm. If you’d like to enter the contest, be sure to sign up in advance at the Pro Shop. Stay right there at the Great Hall for Bingo from 2 to 3:30 pm. Chris Horn and her committee are offering FREE Bingo cards and prizes for both adults and children. YES, kids can play, too, since this is plain, simple Bingo. Take a short break for a quick nap, change your clothes [Don’t forget your boots!], and get a bite to eat. Then, it’s back to the Great Hall at 7 pm for some line dancing with Elaine Wiland. She’ll be doing all the easy dances and always cues each dance for those who haven’t done it before. Bring along a snack, and BYOB. You can just sit and watch or get out there and dance. No partner is required! Be sure to check the schedule on the front page of this issue for all the times and places! Rosemarie Paeth, 326-8007

JOIN THE PARADE!

DOCUMENTS REVIEW COMMITTEE FORMED The organizational meeting of the Documents Review ad hoc Committee [DRC] went ver y well. Many r esidents attended the meeting, and 19 residents had signed up to serve on the committee. A request had been sent to each of the 19 residents asking for background information if he/she were interested in chairing the committee. Five candidates submitted their information. Subsequently, Mary Javor was chosen to chair the committee, based solely on her outstanding achievements in the business world with regard to tax law and bylaws implementation. All those at the organizational meeting highly endorsed Mary after I read her credentials. [Contact me if you would like me to share that info with you.] Mary chose Elaine Morgan, Susan Hoffman, Carolyn Skorich, Al Freeman, and Cheri Biggs. Betty LaFrance and Betty Felton are two of the three alternates. George Reynolds is the BoD Liaison. The DRC is tasked with: (1) Recommending RH Bylaws be brought into compliance with Florida Statues 720 and 617; and (2) Recommending items to add/delete/rescind/change to the Bylaws, to Policies & Procedures, and to Rules & Regulations. All meetings are open to all residents. Katherine Beebe, 897-6947

SUMMARY OF THE RECENT TOWN HALL MEETING The Town Hall meeting on May 12 was a huge success! Over 300 Royal Highlands residents attended. Many residents spoke during the meeting, and everyone had something nice to say about Royal Highlands and why they chose to buy here. As I heard them, the main issues residents want the Board of Directors to take action on are: (1) Security, (2) Lack of space to hold meetings and seminars, (3) Purchase the old sales office and vacant lot at the entrance to our subdivision, and (4) Update Royal Highlands’ governing documents. The entire list is recorded in the Official Minutes. As of this writing, I can tell you that we heard you! A Documents Review Committee has been established with an intense timeline to get this done by the end of 2015. A Safety & Security Committee, Technology Committee, and Property Use & Purchase Committee ar e in the pr ocess of being formed. Volunteers will be needed, and I hope you will step up to help. Our next Town Hall forum is scheduled for Wednesday, October 28, from 1 to 3 pm in the Great Hall. Please mark your calendar, and plan to come. Don’t forget to check the Royal Highlands website for current information. Katherine Beebe, RHPOA President & Precinct 1 Rep, 897-6947

GARDEN CLUB

Membership Show & Tell

Monday, July 6, 10 am in the Rec Center Meeting Room Tip of the Month: It is important that gardeners deadhead spent blooms from flowering plants, both for aesthetic reasons and for the benefit of the plant. Bloom and seed formation drain an enormous amount of energy from the plant. Seed production also signals the plant to slow down blooms since, once seeds are produced, a signal is sent to the plant that its reproduction task has been accomplished. That energy is best conserved so the plant can become stronger and produce more blooms. I deposit the cuttings at the base of the plant so that decomposed plant material will decay and add much needed nutrients to our poor soil. Go here for many more gardening tips each month: http://lake.ifas.ufl.edu/discovery-gardens/gardeningtips.shtml [Bill Bird, 787-8905]

Monday, July 6: This meeting will be something completely different for the Royal Highlands Garden Club. It will be a membership participation meeting, where members will show some of their favorite plants, flowers, handy gardening gadgets, etc. Have nothing to show? Then, bring your favorite ideas and tricks that work well for you in your garden. Have a favorite plant that does well? Share that info with fellow club members. This can be lots of fun and became one of the most favorite meetings in my garden club back in New York. It is also a good opportunity to share seeds and cuttings with fellow members. Almost anything goes. The chairs will be arranged in the round so we can interact with fellow members and see what they are talking about from our chairs. Monday, August 3: The Creative Floral Arrangement Class, conducted by Lorraine Gabler, originally scheduled for July 6, has been delayed, at her request, until our August meeting. The cost of $15 p/p includes the materials and her fee. Please bring your cash or check, made payable to RHPOA, when you sign up. If you did not sign up at our May meeting, please contact Michelle Penski [435-7657] or email her at [email protected]. If we do not have at least 25 participants for the Creative Floral Arrangement Class, the fee may be increased Garden Club Bus Trip to Ravine Garden State Park in Palatka on March 25. according to the number of participants we have. Reminders:  Agriculture Center & Discovery Gardens: Horticulture workshops ar e held on the 2nd Saturday of each month. The Gardens are open Monday thru Friday and the 2nd Saturday of each month, 9 am until 4 pm. In addition, informative workshops are held at 10 am on the 2 nd Saturday of each month.  Master Gardener Plant Clinic: Monday thru Friday, 9 am to 4 pm, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. out.] Students organize the supplies and make change. This is our 9th year helping the students, and the teachers really look forward to our donations. Needed supplies are:

It’s that time of year when students look at one more month of summer break and then head back to classes. My daughter Kim and I are asking for help with school supplies for the needy children of Minneola Charter Elementary. Every year, the need grows as the students approach the most important thing they will ever do in their lives . . . getting a good education.

   

Minneola Charter Elementary has about 1100 students, and 53% of them receive free or reduced lunches. This school population grows every year because of the quality education received there.

 

Many students will come to school that first week with either no supplies or just the bare minimum. Teachers will supply, out of their own pockets, as much as possible so anything we come up with is of great help to everyone. Kim r uns the supply store with special needs students. Teachers identify the students who are in the greatest need and give them play S.S.-GOLLF dollar s. The students then go to the store to purchase their own supplies. [This gives them a sense of ownership and is not seen as a hand-

There are, and will be, many sales for school supplies during July and August so watch the ads. Please drop off your donations in the Rec Center. Anything you can do will be very much appreciated. Thanks for all your support. Kim Nash-Dison, Vice-Principal, Minneola Charter Elementary Dona Nash, 728-8978

SAFELY PASSING GOLF CARTS Many people must think it’s wrong to drive behind a golf cart. So, they pass golf carts in very unsafe conditions. How many times have you had to slow down to avoid a collision because a driver approaching from the opposite direction passed a golf cart when they did not have safe clearance? Please stay behind the golf cart until it is safe to pass! You don’t need to cause an accident just because you are too impatient to remain behind the golf cart. Rosemarie Paeth, 326-8007

During those dog days of July, we will continue to meet every Tuesday afternoon. Even though many of our members have left for the summer, the turnout each week has been extremely satisfying, and many projects have been completed. We will be working on completing our charity quilts, which were started in June, and also the Fidget Quilts for Alzheimer’s patients. On Tuesday, July 21, a group will be traveling to Deland to visit the summer quilt display at the Stetson Mansion. If you wish to join us, please call or email me. If reservations are still open, we would be pleased to have you. As always, if you are new to our community and have an interest in quilting, come join us on Tuesday afternoons. Noreen Bradfield, 314-2370, [email protected]

BICYCLE CLUB

Monday, November 2, 4 pm Rec Center Meeting Room The next meeting of the Bicycle Club will be held on Monday, November 2. However, those of you who are here all summer can still enjoy rides every Saturday and on all even-numbered weekdays, starting at 8 am, from the Great Hall. Also, be sure to check out our website at www.rhbike.webs.com for our off-campus rides, which depart from the Great Hall at 8 am.

GO WITH THE FLOW! Cyclists who ride facing traffic are 5 to 10 times at greater risk of being hit by a motorist at a driveway or intersection. Ride on the right side of the road in a straight and predictable path. Also, if you are riding on the roads or on our numerous trails and stop for any reason, you need to pull off the trail or road. Stopping on the road or trail could cause an accident, and, besides, it is discourteous to other cyclists and motorists. You need to remember to share the road as well.

An application form can be downloaded from our website, or you may pick one up at a flying session. Administrative [non-flying] meetings are held regularly on the 2nd Saturday of each month, at 9 am in the Rec Center Meeting Room, except during the months of June, July, and August, when there are no meetings. On October 30, the Model Yacht Club will host a table at our community’s Activities Fair to display some of our boats. We hope to interest some new members. If you see the boats sailing on Royal Lake, stop by. We will gladly give you the remote control, and let you sail the boat. Fun! Fun! Fun! Some members bring electric power boats and have a good time running and racing them. There has also been discussion about having the PEAR Park Pilots flying amphibious planes to come to Royal Lake on sail days and join us. Sounds like fun! Keep those batteries charged and the sails up! Phillip Rea, 787-6694

We don’t have designated teaching times but are willing to help anyone who needs help. Our current schedule is posted on the bulletin board. We have a tournament scheduled at the end of each/most months for the game we’ve practiced on during that month. So join us, and you may see your face in one of our winner photos on the wall. We play as individuals, partners, or round robins, depending on the number of people present. Different games help us learn new skills as well as stretch our memory and eye/hand coordination. We usually work our way thru the following games: Royal 51, Golf, Double V 8-Ball, Pea Ball, 6-Ball, 7-Ball, 8-Ball, 9-Ball, and Cut Throat. We like to have fun and there is always someone willing to help or answer questions. Come make new friends and learn. Marilyn Swider, 326-8471, [email protected]

Reminder: The MMGA has a different game scheduled every Wednesday with an 8 am shotgun. A signup sheet is posted on the board outside the Men’s Room in the Pro Shop. Rules Refresher: Your ball comes to rest next to an irrigation box in the rough, which will interfere with your next shot. You correctly measure for the drop but plop the ball into the fairway . . . not the rough. Is this okay! YES, there is no distinction made between fairway and rough. [Decision 24-2b/8]
