important dates coming in 2017 Senior Pastor Aaron Rayburn

As we put an “amen” to 2016, here are some very important dates and events to remember: Remember to sign up for grow Discipleship classes as soon as possible as they begin January 8 (Sundays at 5:30 p.m.). The theme for 2017 (spring and fall) is “Things We Struggle With.” We are offering seminars on anxiety, suffering, finances, and etc. These seminars offer excellent opportunities to invite unbelievers and those who are undiscipled. The grow semester will start Sunday, January 8 and conclude Sunday, April 2. Starting January 15 we will be offering 2 worship services and 1 Sunday School hour: First Service: 8:45 - 9:45 a.m. Small Group Sunday School: 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Second Service: 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. The genre of the first service will be the same as our current worship services. The second service will not be as blended as the first. It will lean toward a more casual and creative worship service. We will start the new David Platt DVD series Secret Church: The Global Gospel In a World of Religions Wednesday, January 18 (6:30 p.m.). If you would like a study guide booklet - please sign up in the main hallway or contact Judy Ellison (244-2975, [email protected]) in the church office. These books are only $5. Here is a short description: A multiplicity of religions exists in the world, all claiming to hold the truth (or at least some truth) about who we are, how we got here, what we’re doing, and where we’re going. Billions of people believe in Christianity, while others embrace Islam. Some are Hindu and others are Buddhist. Amidst it all, many are atheist, or at the very least agnostic. So how are we to think and what are we to do in this massive marketplace of religious ideas? Pray for our revival services with Rick Coram Sunday, April 30 through Wednesday, May 3! Let’s pray and show up with our hearts ready to receive the Word! Thank you for your faithfulness to Jesus and His church! 2016 was a great year! Let’s pray that 2017 will find us walking more closely with our Father! Love you very much! Deo Volente! Pastor Aaron P.S. Yep, Lord willing, we will start community groups on Wednesday, June 21!

Commitment

Family Ministries Pastor Travis Cross Commitment. What does that word bring to your mind? As we start a new year many people have “resolutions” that they make. They try to stay committed to them, but most often by the end of January they have already fallen away from the commitment they made. To me commitment means sticking it out to the end of whatever I have committed to. There seems to be a great lack in commitment these days. Many people do not take their commitments serious and they fall away from them very easily. I want to challenge everyone to be committed to our church and its ministries. Ask the Lord to help you stay committed to being in church. And here is a BIG challenge: Ask the Lord to help you be committed to being ON TIME for services! We need our volunteers to be on time and in place BEFORE an activity is scheduled to begin! Please help us out by being on time this year! We are getting ready to start a new schedule on Sunday mornings beginning on January 15. Our first worship service will be 8:45-9:45 a.m., Sunday School from 10:00-11:00 a.m., and second service from 11:15 a.m. 12:15 p.m. We need you to commit to being on time to these services, and if you serve during one of those times we need you to be in place before the starting time - PLEASE! Sunday evening activities will change times January 8 and will run from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Please be on time for these activities as well! Thank you to everyone who serves in our Family Ministries area! I am looking forward to our second semester! AWANA will resume on Sunday, January 8 and Good News Club will resume on Tuesday, January 17. Thank you for your love and prayers during my recent surgeries. Praise the Lord for all of you and your prayers! Thank you also for the way you have shown love to me and my family during Christmas. From me and my family we pray that you all will have a Blessed New Year! Happy 2017! Pastor Travis, Karen, Wynn, and Graham

I challenge you!

Missions, Evangelism and Outreach Pastor Eric Wooten December 12 I arrived home from a trip to Asia, where we visited two of our IMB missionaries in Vietnam and then went to spend time in Myanmar at our orphanage. Dick Stroup, who now has been on this trip three times, along with Larry Kendall and Lamar Haltiwanger made up our team of four. It was a joy to travel with these men. God used us each day doing different things with different people, and I was so blessed to work alongside of them. My highlight was to be able to baptize 14 young Asian followers on our last Sunday there. Wow - God is good all the time, and all the time God is good! The New Year means new commitments. I challenge you to seek God through PRAYER, FASTING, AND HIS WORD about where He wants you to “go and make disciples.” Love you all! Pastor Eric

Myanmar Trip Report and Church conference January 11 Pastor Eric Wooten, Lamar Haltiwanger, Larry Kendall and Dick Stroup will speak about their Myanmar Mission Trip Wednesday night, January 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. We will also have a Called Church Conference afterwards to present 2017 Deacons for a vote and to present the final 2017 Registry.

Guest Speakers January 1 and January 8 Sunday, January 1 we are blessed to have Jeff Heath and Randy Creamer, Director of Disaster Relief and Men’s Ministry for the South Carolina Baptist Convention, speaking during the morning worship service. Sunday, January 8 we look forward to hearing Dr. Michael Duduit, founding Dean of the College of Christian Studies and the Clamp Divinity School at Anderson University. He also serves as Professor of Christian Ministry and has written several books on ministry.

There will be bins in the main hallway and at the Preschool entrance just waiting for your donations. Drop off jewelry, (working) watches, scarves, handbags and wallets anytime until February 1. Also... do you know of a boutique or jewelry store that might be interested in donating? Let us know! For those that don’t know, Party with a Purpose is a night for us to love on the women of Shepherd’s Gate (home for homeless women), and they get to go shopping for FREE. If you would like to volunteer, we have 3 volunteer options for the Accessories Room (and many more options in other areas): • Bin checking. • Setting up the day of the event (a group at 9:00 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m.). • Volunteering to help the women shop on the evening of February 3. If you’re interested in volunteering or for more information/questions, contact Jeanette Maxey at 864-349-6896 or [email protected].

Great Movements only need 10 percent

Student Ministries Pastor John Freeman Happy New Year! Here is an excerpt from a challenging article by Greg Stier. I pray it will encourage you as we start 2017. If you haven’t heard it today, Jesus loves you! “Scientists at (RPI) Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have found that when just 10 percent of the population holds an unshakable belief, their belief will always be adopted by the majority of the society” (Science Daily July 26, 2011). Take a look at history from recent to distant and you’ll see that it wasn’t the 90% that changed the culture around them. Instead, it was the fully committed 10% who changed everything. How could the combined preaching power of two extraordinary evangelistic extremists named George Whitefield and John Wesley inspire a movement that would turn America and England upside down with the gospel? How could a tiny handful of mostly Jewish believers take the gospel from Jerusalem to Rome in less than thirty years without Twitter, e-mail, cell phones, www.theapostlejohn.com, or planes, trains, and automobiles? The answer to these questions is “the radicalized 10%.” This statistic has amazingly powerful implications for the way we do ministry. Too often, we are taught as ministry leaders to reach the masses at all costs. But this is counterintuitive to the way that Jesus did his ministry. Yes, he ministered to the masses, but he “radicalized” a small group that he nicknamed apostles and, after he ascended into Heaven, they radicalized the rest. Isn’t it interesting that of the one hundred and twenty in the upper room, there were twelve apostles? That’s 10%. I remember experiencing the power of this principle as a young church planter. Our goal as a very young church planting team was to get our handful of leaders fully on board with the cause brewing in our hearts. We trained them, equipped them, met with them, strategized with them, and prayed with them until the twitchy revolution that was boiling in our hearts spilled over into their souls. As a result, we were able to eventually see our church explode spiritually and numerically. We made a lot of stupid mistakes in the formative years, but passion goes a long, long way in the arduous process of starting and leading a ministry. This passion cannot be taught but must be caught. It was when the 10% in our church caught on fire with that divine blaze that the rest of the congregation caught on fire, too. (continued in the next column)

How About You?

Guest Writer Barry Brown Now that we’ve gone through an incredibly busy Christmas season filled with fun, food and lots of people and activity, sometimes the contrast between the holiday season and the New Year can make it seem like things may actually slow down a little. In a lot of ways that can be a very good thing. Between all that I end up eating through the weeks leading up to Christmas and a lot of the events that are crammed into that timeframe, it’s probably good to be able to kick back a little and rest with the intentions of cutting back on both calories and calendar entries. But I wonder how grateful we really are when it comes to all the things that the Lord blesses us with. When we take the time to rest and relax, do we focus on God’s goodness to us - or does it magnify the gnawing emptiness in our hearts? When I was shopping during December I noticed the many people that were in parking lots holding signs describing their plight and asking for donations. The number of people seemed to multiply this year! I honestly hate seeing them coming toward me in these instances - partly because I really feel sorry for them... and quite honestly partly because I get mad thinking of how many might be faking and just panhandling. After watching “A Christmas Carol” for probably the twentieth time on TV, it made me wonder - am I really one of the agents of change Jesus wants to use to help those around me, or do I just try to convince myself that I do what I’m supposed to? Am I really being someone God cheerfully uses, or am I going through the motions and not living up to my potential? Yes, we are to be wise as serpents and gentle as doves, but more often than not God gives us more chances to show love, mercy and compassion - not harshness and irritation. I don’t want to be a Scrooge this year. I want to be someone that God can pour His Holy Spirit into so I can be Jesus to the world. I don’t want to be judgmental and rebuking - I want to be genuinely loving and caring. I want to wake up every day looking forward to seeing how God can use me and who God may have lined up for me to encourage and appreciate. How about you? (continued from the previous column)

If this principle worked when two untrained friends in their early twenties planted a church, it is true for you as well. It applies whether you are leading a church, youth group, or Sunday school class. The 10% starts with you.

“Through it all I’ve learned to trust in Jesus. I’ve learned to trust in God. Through it all I’ve learned to depend upon His word.” Andrae Crouch As we look back on 2016, we should thank God for another year and for all the blessings we received through His love, mercy, and grace. As the song lyrics state, we learn to trust in God to get us through the difficult times as well as the good times. As 2017 approaches, we can trust God to again watch over us as Proverbs 3 states to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart….. and He will make your paths straight.” Thanks to those that helped pack the fruit bags for the ERBC homebounds and then delivered a fruit bag or plant to each homebound. The January monthly meeting will be a lunch on Monday, January 16 at 12:00 noon in the Family Life Center. The meeting will include a devotional, program, and catered lunch at $5 per person. Please sign up on the sign-up sheet located in the main church hallway and pay the fee to Pat Billings in the church office by Sunday, January 8. Bus transportation will be available for the monthly meetings and all events. Please contact Pat Billings in the church office at 864-244-2975, ext. 125 one day prior to arrange transportation. Lack of transportation should not prevent you from attending.

The ERBC Finance Team has approved a Building Fund line item for contributions and donations to be used for current and future remodeling and building projects. When giving to the Building Fund, please write Building Fund on your contribution envelope.
