From the Counselor Debi Scacco

This is hardest newsletter article for me to write. It is saying Goodbye. For the next school year, I am transferring to Lea Hill Elementary. This is very bitter sweet for me. I am looking forward to a new opportunity, but I will so miss my dear teaching partners, students and families. I have so enjoyed my role as counselor with Ilalko students and families. You each mean a lot to me. As I tell our students when someone moves, we remember the person in our mind and heart so they never truly leave us. I will take with me many memories and care of the students at Ilalko. I appreciate the time I have been able to teach and counsel the students and families and what I have learned from you. Ms. Scacco Ilalko School Counselor

Staff Appreciation Nita Johnson & Carrie Emmons

Staff Appreciation finished the year with a Taco Bar Lunch for our teachers and staff in May. The Taco Bar lunch was the fifth of the events we sponsored this year (the others were a Breakfast in September, an Italian Dinner in November, a Soup/Salad Lunch in January, & a Potato Bar in March). None of these events would have been possible without the generous contributions of the numerous parents who made dishes or donated food items. We were entirely blown away with the quality of the items and the dedication of the parents who participated this year. You truly made a difference to the teachers and staff! Thank you for helping this committee accomplish their goal of letting the teachers know they are appreciated and supported by the parent community. Have a great summer!

Scholastic Book Fair May 29-June 8 Maurene Stapel

Spring Scholastic Book Fair is right around the corner. On May 29th, the Ilalko Library will magically be transformed into a bookstore with a myriad of choices for summer reading. Students will be able to shop during their library class times through the end of the fair on June 8th. There are several ways to families to s hop together during the fair. You are invited to shop weekdays before and after school with your children during the two-week event and take a break from the fun Carnival activities to visit the Book Fair during the evening of June 8th. We will be offering a new online shopping opportunity to extend our fair to parents, grandparents, etc., who like to shop early, shop for gifts, shop from a distant location, shop from an expanded selection, or just avoid the hustle and bustle of the fair and shop from their computers. Check the school website for more information. This online shopping adventure will take place May 25 – June 11. These orders will be shipped free to the school. We look forward to a great Spring Book Fair. Continue to urge students to reach their rich Reading and AR goals so they qualify for a free $5.00 book from the fair courtesy of PTA. Email a librarian if you desire additional information regarding the fair([email protected] or [email protected])

Earn cash for Ilalko, all summer long! As you prepare for summer picnics, reunions and celebrations, think Box Tops, Labels 4 Education and Tyson A+. There are so many products that will help you earn cash for our school. Do you shop online? Go to BoxTop Marketplace first and with one easy step you can earn cash for Ilalko. There are over 175 retailers you can shop and earn eBoxTops. (E.g. Target, Expedia, Macy’s, Walmart, Sam’s club, Travelocity and The Scholastic Book Store just to name a few)

As many of you know, the past four years we’ve been extremely lucky to win funds from the Supermall’s Earning for Learning event (which school’s can win up to $10,00.00). Each year it gets more difficult to win, with it’s increasing participation from other schools. This past year we won 3rd place (winning $2,500.00) out of 296 schools that participated, thanks to all our Ilalko families and staff. We are asking our Ilalko families to look out for this event happening about mid August (the event usually starts August 15 to October 5th), maybe even waiting to do your back to school shopping until this event starts. You can look for dates and details at the SuperMall’s website : http://www.supermall.com. Thank you for all your support! Ilalko Husky Herald

Summer Reading Olympics Maria Edwards

Attention Summer Readers!!! Summer Break is around the corner and I know it's very EXCITING!!! Lots of camping, beaches, parks to go to, going on vacation trips, and especially spending time with your family. As you will be doing all these FUN things, don't forget to take 15-30 minutes in a day to take a book and READ, or have your parents read to you. It's very IMPORTANT to keep reading during the summer so you don't forget what you have learned during the school year. Look for information and forms coming home regarding the Summer Reading Olympics program. Remember, RECORD the minutes you read or read to for each day on the form and return it in the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year.. If you lose your reading sheet during summer break, you can also access it through our Ilalko Website. Here's the MEDAL breakdown:

Students who read 1500 minutes over the summer will receive a Gold Medal. (Average 30 min/5 days a week)

Students who read 1000 minutes over the summer will receive a Silver Medal. (Average 20 min/5 days a week)

Students who read 500 minutes over the summer will receive a Bronze Medal. (Average 15 min/5 days a week) Have FUN this summer and HAPPY READING!!!

Summer Math Olympics Maria Edwards

Ilalko has a Summer Math Program that is similar to our Summer Reading Olympics. So, don't forget to take at least 20 minutes in a day during your summer break to practice some math facts. It's so IMPORTANT to retain what you have learned during the school year to carry over to the 2012-2013 school year. Remember to record only 500 minutes fun Math Facts and be rewarded a MEDAL for just practicing..... Here's some Math Facts for you: Can you figure out how many days would it take if you practice 20 minutes of math facts per day to reach a total of 500 minutes? Look for information to come home via Kid Mail before the end of the school year. Volume 12, Issue 10
