Working as volunteers in the Hudson community and the Hudson schools has been a joyful experience for the past four years. In March 2009, we received an email from Michelle Obama asking all to make a difference by volunteering in their community. Thus, the origin of this booklet. The students are a great inspiration and it has been quite humbling. Working on this booklet for two years, we have become familiar with all the wonderful programs offered to our kids in the community. We hope you, as parents, will put this booklet to good use. It will open up worlds to your children, offer new experiences, new relationships, new skills, new friends while having a lot of fun. We have read that students who spend a portion of their summer vacation participating in organized activities will have greater success in school the following year. We are participants in Lisa Dolan’s wonderful “Hudson Reads” program with 100 other volunteers. And at last year’s Book Festival, we were honored to meet and listen to Dr. Walter Dean Myers, who now serves as the United States Ambassador of Young People’s Literature. Dr. Myers said, “I am living proof of how a young person’s life can be dramatically changed by exposure to the all the arts, music, literature and drama. He spoke about his childhood, going from extremely rough times, to being accepted into a new family who offered him the joy of reading, which transformed his life. It is our hope that Dr. Myers, who traveled to our Book Festival from California, will return to Hudson once again. We met our partner in this effort, Ohrine Stewart, while Dan was videotaping a bi-monthly Common Council meeting. Immediately, we realized we shared the same philosophy of giving to our community. Ohrine has served as an Alderman for the 4th Ward in Hudson for several years and is an outstanding member of our community. Our goal in creating this booklet has always been to make it affordable for all kids. Some scholarships are available.

Have a great summer! Oh hrine SStewart tewart and and Mary Mar y & Dan Udell Ohrine

Ohrine & Mary We would like to express our deep gratitude to former Mayor Rick Scalera and current Mayor William Hallenbeck and the City of Hudson for their encouragement and support. Our heartfelt thanks to Ellen Henderson of ‘Parents in Partnership’ for giving hope and love to many students and their families for so many years. And to our editor, Dan Udell, for his many hours of design and computer graphics production, which were a labor of love. Also to Michael "Loki" Anthony for his wonderful drawing for our cover, which we use each year. And special thanks to all the principals, teachers, coaches and participating organizations who spend so many hours in creating exciting programs for our youth, not to mention Mark Brenneman, principal of the M.C. Smith Intermediate School for distributing this booklet. It has been wonderful working with Maria Suttmeier, our Superiintendent of Schools, and wish her well in leading our school system to a successful future. Lastly, but certainly not least, a special thanks to The Galvan Foundation Charitable Trust for underwriting the printing of this booklet. Without their support, of course, there would be no booklet. Many, many thanks to them for believing in what we are trying to accomplish with our young people. Dear Parents, Summer is upon us. As we look for ways to keep our children busy, please consider the power of reading. Get your child to the local library for a free library card. A great selection of books will be available to them to meet their interest and help to while away the hours. The greatest gift you can give to your child is your time. Listen to them read. Read with them. Discuss the books you are sharing. Educators frequently speak about “Summer Loss.” As parents, we can battle academic loss by seeing to it that our children read for 30 minutes each day. We will be building their skills, a love of books, and creating a path to a lifetime of learning.

Yours truly, Lisa Dolan MCSIS Literacy Coach

Hello Summer! Tis the season for summer planning and preparation! Luckly, Hudson has all sorts of exciting activities for children to get involved in. The “Hudson Is A Summer Festival” booklet is a great resource for parents who want to encourage learning throughout July and August. Learning does not have to end when school lets out. In fact, children learn most when they are actively engaged in art, music, dance, theater, sports, gardening, science, literacy, and other types of enriching, hands-on activities. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” Summer time can be the optimal time for learning something new by exploring your options. Please use this booklet to learn about the many options right here in our community and get involved!
