Message for November 3, 4, 7, 2012 Series: ‘The Family in God’s Hands’ “God provides for our families” 

From $900,000 down to $500,000. That was the change in the purchase price of the Campus Lutheran Chapel on the MNSU campus. The Campus Lutheran Chapel is now Hosanna Highland Campus and Community Church. Rather than Hosanna Lutheran Church incurring further debt we are asking disciples of Hosanna and alumni of the chapel to prayerfully consider a one time financial gift. We are trusting God to raise the full $500,000. Ask God to stir our hearts.

For those interested in becoming members and wanting to know more about the Lutheran faith, we will be having a New Disciple Class on Saturday, November 10 at 9:00 am in the fellowship hall. Child care will be available.

I.CARE-GIVING MINISTRIES GriefShare—(Thank you note from a GriefShare recipient) I found that attending GriefShare at Hosanna after the death of my daughter Heather was very beneficial for me. It felt good to be in the presence of others who were also dealing with the death of a loved one as we had a common bond. Jackie and Doug were excellent factilitators and I made some good friends after taking the course. I think taking GriefShare is a MUST after experiencing the death of a loved one. Claudia Johnson

Stephens Ministry—(Thank you note from a Stephens Minister recipient.) Stephens Ministry has been a blessing to me. I have a major depressive disorder. It has a lot of hills and valleys. When I am in these valleys my Stephen Ministry person has been there for me with a spiritual side to my care. This is care that I would not have with my traditional health care. God has used these people in my life to give me support and I want to thank them. Sandara Fakler

REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK Martin Luther – Faith Alone! October 27, 28 & 31, 2012 REST ~ Martin’s parents were strict – as a young child Martin was once beaten by his mother for taking a nut. Martin’s father planned that Martin should become a lawyer and sent him to school at age 4, where his teachers demanded perfection as well. The teaching of the church at the time was that people earned their salvation, so if you wanted to get to heaven you needed to please God through good works. There was no concept of God’s love and grace – only His wrath and judgment. Martin’s parents, teachers, and even God demanded perfection. Martin gave his all but just couldn’t measure up. He was tormented that his best efforts weren’t good enough to receive salvation and he was consumed with terror of dying and ending up in hell. READ & REFLECT ~ DAY 1. Through a series of events Martin sold his law books, joined a monastery, & began teaching at a university. In preparing for his lessons he poured over the Bible. One day he stumbled over some verses that began to open his understanding of the true Gospel message. Read Romans 1:17 and Habakkuk 2:4. Martin realized it isn’t about his righteousness but God’s that we receive by faith. Imagine the freedom Martin experienced as he moved from Law to Gospel in his spiritual understanding! DAY 2 ~The church in Martin’s day taught that Jesus and the saints had done more good works than had been necessary so those ‘extra’ good works were stored up in a heavenly vault, so to speak. People could purchase indulgences, pieces of paper with an official seal, which sort of bought those extra good works, which then could be applied toward themselves or toward their loved ones who had already died and were waiting in purgatory to be released into heaven. Martin realized that this practice had no Biblical support. Read Romans 3:21-24 and Galatians 2:16 as if you were Martin reading them for the first time. DAY 3 ~ Read Ephesians 2: 8-9. The church had lost the biblical understanding of salvation. Apart from Jesus, the law of God crushes us. Martin began to see that God is loving and gracious, not vengeful. He discovered in Scripture that we are saved by grace through faith, not through works. Finally Martin received God’s peace as he began to understand the good news of the gospel through Jesus. Martin wanted everyone to understand these same truths and live under grace instead of law. His passionate attempt to reform the church was all about the importance of centering preaching & worship around Jesus. It isn’t about what we do for God but about what He has done & continues to do for us because of His love & grace. DAY 4 ~ Consider reading daily through the Small Catechism as a review. One of Martin Luther’s accomplishments was translating the Bible from Latin into the common German language so that every family could purchase their own Bible and read it together. They were no longer at the mercy of corrupt teaching from the church. Martin wrote the Large and Small Catechisms, categorizing foundational Biblical truths, using Scripture to support each area of teaching. Churches and families today still rely on these tools in teaching adults, youth and children basic spiritual understanding. Thank You, God for the gift of Your Word!! DAY 5 ~ If you have a Lutheran hymnal, look for hymns written by Martin Luther. “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” is one. Read through the words of this great hymn. Consider watching the Martin Luther movie. Excellent! Aren’t you proud to be a Lutheran? I know I am!

QUEST ~ Good & Gracious God, thank You for Your love and grace. Thank You for Jesus who paid the price for our sins, thank You for righteousness through Jesus and for the assurance of eternal life, because of His worthiness, not ours. In His precious name, Amen.
