Artist of the Month:

CELIA CRUZ

A BIG Thank You! The instructors and staff of the Sabor Dance School would like to extend their warmest thanks and appreciation to all those who attended our Grand Openening Weekend celebration last month. Thanks to all those who provided refreshments, supplies, decorations and manpower that helped made the weekend a success. Big hugs to Mariana Parma and Jason Colacino, visiting international instructors, for their riveting performances and inspiring workshops. Last but not least, a huge thanks to Sabor's major sponsor, Aardvark Communications Ltd., for their continued support and commitment to our vision through the years. As Sabor Dance School marks it's fifth anniversary this year, we'd like to acknowledge all those individuals, groups, and companies that have passed through our doors and into our hearts, as they are part of our path that "does not only lead to gold, but is paved with it."

With her passing in 2003 at age 81, Celia Cruz was affectionatey and undisputably known by many as "The Queen of Salsa"; and so, in honour of Mother's Day, we recognize this fiery sonera as one of the most succesful Cuban performers of the twentieth century. Born in Havanna, Cuba, on October 21, 1925, Cruz was taken by her aunt to cabarets to sing along with her cousin. In the 1940's, she began singing for local radio programs. She studied at Havanna's Conservatory of Music from 1947 to 1950, abandoning her family's wishes for her to be a Spanish language teacher. Cruz's first recordings were made in 1948 in Venezuela, but her first major breakthough

came in 1950, when she was hired by La Sonora Matancera, a Cuban orchestra, as lead singer. For 15 years the band travelled all over Latin America, and Cruz's stardom was born. The band left Cuba for the United States in 1965, shortly after the beginning of much political unrest. Life in America wasn't easy at first, although the mix of rhythms known as "salsa" (that she had helped to create) was already popular. Her career gained momentum with associations with numerous salsa and mambo giants like Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Larry Harlow, Louie Ramirez, Johnny Pacheco, and eventually ended up in the famed Fania All Stars. Through sold-out worldwide concert tours, television shows, commercials and flims, and over 70 albums, Cruz won 3 Grammys, 4 Latin Grammys, and numerous other awards. In July 2003, Cruz died of a cancerous brain tumour, to the dismay of her armies of fans. She lay in state in Miami as 200,000 of her fans paid their last respects. She will be forever known in the hearts of salsa and AfroCuban lovers worldwide for her electrifiying performances, outlandish costumes, powerful voice, and improvisational talent.
