Haskayne Founders’ Circle 2015-2016 Annual Report

The Haskayne Founders’ Circle has raised over $4,460,000 since its inception in 2011. Together, the Haskayne Founders’ Circle has raised over $4,460,000 since its inception in 2011. In five short years, these funds have helped Haskayne to support students on their educational journeys, to attract leading scholars, to maintain its winning legacy for business competitions and to shape a new generation of entrepreneurs. This group has come together as champions for the school, creating a momentum for business education in Calgary. The endowments created by this group have helped to build the vision of the Haskayne School of Business and have eased the burden of stormy economic times. We are grateful for your confidence and the strong giving that we have continued to see over the past year. Together, we are creating a firm financial footing for Canada’s next top-tier business school. In April 2016, the University of Calgary officially launched its most ambitious fundraising campaign, Energize: The Campaign for Eyes High. The campaign already has the support of more than 20,000 donors from around the world, including the Haskayne Founders’ Circle, and looks forward to your continued support to fuel our shared vision. I am honoured to be a Haskayne Founders’ Circle member myself, with a pledge for five years at $10,000 per year. I am pleased to announce an expansion of the Haskayne Founders’ Circle at the Haskayne School of Business in 2016-17 with the introduction of the Haskayne Ambassadors program. Aimed at the next generation of great philanthropists, Ambassadors can begin their commitment to business education with a $5,000 annual gift. I look forward to seeing what we can achieve as we engage with alumni and supporters more than ever. Together, we will shape business leaders to change the world.

Haskayne School of Business

By coming together, the Haskayne Founders’ Circle has created a force to further business education in Calgary.

“The best way to create the future that we want to see, is to come together to build it. This is why I am an advocate for personal philanthropy. By coming together, the Haskayne Founders’ Circle has created a force to further business education in Calgary. In five short years, so much has been achieved. The next years promise to be transformational, with the bold goals of the Energize campaign collectively inspiring further commitment from fellow Haskayne Founders’ Circle members and engaging the next generation of philanthropists.” Richard (Dick) Haskayne, OC, AOE, FCA Member, Haskayne Founders’ Circle

Business education in Calgary was changed in 2002, when Dick Haskayne provided a transformational gift and the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Management was named the Haskayne School of Business. This gift has now grown to be one of the University of Calgary’s largest endowments, providing stable funding to advance research and attract top scholars and students. Dick Haskayne provided the essential seed funding for the Global Energy Executive MBA program, which was the first program of its kind when it launched in 2012 and now has inspired other programs around the world. He is a proud member of the Haskayne Founders’ Circle, continuing to join with others in support of Haskayne’s vision of becoming Canada’s next top-tier business school.

Motivating. Life changing. Sustaining. Humbling. Although each story is different, these are the words often seen when students express gratitude for their student awards. “This scholarship changed my life. I am an international student from China, and had to adapt to a new culture, new language and new networks. In my second year of my MBA program, I had a baby girl. I received my scholarship at the same time as the arrival of my daughter. The scholarship was just what I needed because I could worry less about my economic needs. This scholarship is helping me to be who I want to be and to take me where I want to go.” - Lancong Mu MBA Global Energy Management and Sustainability

“I am humbled and thankful for the people who reached out and supported someone they did not know. I can never express my thanks enough. To know there are people out there supporting you keeps you going on those days that you need to stay until midnight to get what is needed done. It gives you confidence that you can make a difference.” - Austin Frank BComm student, finance

Empowering students through student awards Supporting students has been a top priority for Haskayne Founders’ Circle members. Some choose to establish their own awards, allowing them to select criteria and name the award, often honouring a loved one. Other Haskayne Founders’ Circle members have supported the endowed funds we have in place which will provide funding in perpetuity for Haskayne Founders’ Circle Scholarships – currently one undergraduate and one graduate award. As of summer 2016, the total for the Haskayne Founders’ Circle endowment funds is over $138,000, thanks to your generous contributions.

Helping students to win in competition, their careers and community This winning legacy is due in part to the excellent teaching of innovative thinking by leaders like Dr. Bob Schulz, a legendary coach and professor of strategy and global management. One of the first priority Haskayne Founders’ Circle funds, the Dr. Bob Schulz Business Competition Succession Fund was established to provide financial support to hire and mentor a faculty member to work alongside Dr. Bob. With the fund in place, the school continues the search for the right candidate to carry on this tradition. Support for competitions has been a priority for Haskayne Founders’ Circle members, most recently through the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Calgary has a reputation as Canada’s most entrepreneurial city, and our Haskayne Founders’ Circle members are ensuring that Haskayne continues to foster this environment with gifts in support of the Energy New Venture Competition. Open to entrepreneurs, researchers, students and seedstage companies from around the country, this competition is a forum to advance leading energy concepts.

Training ground for finance professionals The N. Murray Edwards Trading and Finance Lab opened in 2011, and it has been a catalyst for business education at the university. With access to trading information systems such as Thomson Reuters, Bloomberg and Rotman Interactive Trader, students in finance classes and researchers have made amazing strides in the past five years. Since 2012, teams from UCalgary have been competing in the Rotman International Trading Competition, placing better each year. The launch of the lab was also the stimulus for the creation of the BP Canada Trading Competition, an annual event which introduces students university-wide to commodities sales and trading. It isn’t unusual to see Calgary Portfolio Management Trust (CPMT) students working in the lab at all hours. These students manage a substantial real-money equity portfolio and earn course credit as they build their skills in research, spreadsheet modeling, database management, portfolio tracking, teamwork, public relations and investment strategy. Exposure to real-world portfolios is one of the best learning experiences – and now we’ve extended the experience beyond the lab to ‘Days of Discovery.’ These are intimate trips to key financial centres such as Toronto and New York City to visit successful Haskayne alumni in those finance hubs.

A necessity for top-tier business schools In the past five years, we’ve created a state-of-the-art financial training centre at the Haskayne School of Business thanks to the investments made by Haskayne Founders’ Circle members. CPMT alumni have funded a named trading station and business leaders have helped to offset travel costs for the ‘Day of Discovery’ trips. Others have invested in ensuring that, as a major Canadian financial centre, Calgary has a training ground for future professionals.

Eager to explore new ideas Eager to explore new ideas, Carly Drake’s educational career has taken her to three different institutions - from the east coast to Calgary. What stands out about her Calgary experience? The incredible support she has received, including mentorship from her supervisor and the PhD Summer Research grant.

This funding also means I can travel to share my work at leading events in my field, including the Macromarketing Conference

Haskayne offers a Summer Research Project/Research Development course to enhance the research skills and academic preparedness of our PhD candidates. In 2015-16, funds from the Haskayne Strategic Plan Fund provided $5,000 to the top two students in this course, with $1,000 to the remaining five students. Carly, who is pursuing her PhD in marketing, was one of the top two with her project, which examines the complex relationship with products and how consumers identify with them. “The influence of gender identity on evaluations of products designed for the stereotypical man and woman,” is just beginning to unravel some of the surprising associations consumers have with the flood of products marketed by gender. “I have been able to focus on collecting and analyzing additional data to improve my summer research project for publication. This funding also means I can travel to share my work at leading events in my field, including the Macromarketing Conference to be held this summer in Dublin, Ireland.”

Recognized force in management research PhD student support is vital to a strong research program – to help attract the brightest students, to encourage rising stars and to assist our faculty in leading and mentoring those who are doing research to build a better future. Next year, we plan to expand the PhD student support from the Haskayne Founders’ Circle with the addition of four $15,000 entrance scholarships, helping to build our overall research power. 9

Haskayne Hour is bridging the gap between rigorous academic research and real world business problems. Ken King and Jyoti Gondek teamed up for Haskayne Hour in January 2016

The format is straightforward: we pair our faculty researchers with top Calgary business leaders to discuss a topic from different perspectives. Focused on delivering and discussing new research and its application to industry, Haskayne Hour leaves attendees with applicable, new knowledge and better business practice. With the support of the Haskayne Founders’ Circle, the 2015-16 Haskayne Hour season presented five sessions: • Inside the crisis bubble: Keys to survival Professor Anne Kleffner and Gianna Manes, president and CEO of Enmax Corp., examined how companies should plan for – and deal with – crises as they arrive.

• The Alberta Healthcare system: On the incremental road to mediocrity? Former Alberta Health Services President Chris Eagle and Jack Mintz, the president’s fellow of the School of Public Policy, looked at unique ways to improve the healthcare system.

• Effective governance: More than just checking the box Ian A. Bourne, chairman of Ballard Power, and Loren Falkenberg, associate dean (research), delved into effective board governance and the role of boards in modern society.

• What are you going to do about it? Calgary business legend Jim Gray and Haskayne Dean Jim Dewald looked at finding new opportunities in tough times.

• Adventures in city building Ken King, president and CEO of the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation, and Jyoti Gondek, director of the Westman Centre for Real Estate Studies, explored how professional sports teams are critical to building world-class cities.

Energize: The Campaign for Eyes High is your catalyst to spark meaningful change in the world. Because great cities need great universities. And great universities are built on great philanthropy.

Fueling transformational change – Energize: The Campaign for Eyes High Since launching our Eyes High strategic vision in 2011, our campus community has undertaken transformative changes to be among the nation’s top-five research universities, grounded in innovative teaching and learning, and fully engaging our communities as we move forward. Leading universities require significant investment in people, infrastructure and programming and are typically built on centuries of support. In true Calgary fashion, we intend to fasttrack this timeline with an ambitious campaign goal, $1.3 billion with Haskayne’s campaign goal equaling $120 million. To date, Haskayne has already received gifts and commitments in excess of $44 million. Together, our combined energy, passion and leadership will achieve the greatest impact for Calgarians, Albertans and beyond, energizing student experiences to unleash potential; research outcomes to benefit society; and community connections to strengthen our ties. Together, let’s energize the next generation.
