LEADERSHIP

Happy fall! Over the summer months we took the opportunity to go through our clubhouse and perform our annual deep-cleaning, necessary repairs, and preventative maintenance. The big news this summer was the renovation of our 39 sleeping rooms. Among many other changes, we’ve added new paint, lighting, window treatments, and bed linens, that have significantly enhanced the overnight experience at The Penn Club. The project began in early July, and I’m happy to say that we are right on schedule, and the completed rooms are beautiful. This has been the first major endeavor under my leadership since I started at the Club in January, and has truly proved to be a team effort.

We’ve also purchased a digital signage system for our lobby to alert you of announcements and happenings at the Club. September marks a new month of exciting programs, networking, and renewed reflections on the many facets of your club life. Another new development that we are excited to announce is our buffet-style Wednesday lunch and Friday dinner in the Main Dining Room. For those of you who love to dine in the Main Dining Room, we encourage you to turn up often at these buffet lunches and dinners. I’m eager to welcome you to your homeaway-from-home as we once again enter another exciting chapter in the life of the Club.

A special thank you to our Chief Engineer, Jose Acosta— the man behind the scenes, who worked tirelessly on the renovation project, and keeps this building in such terrific shape.

the highly regarded Professor Peter S. Fader—the Frances and Pei-Yuan Chia Professor of Marketing at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Fader’s expertise centers on the analysis of behavioral data to understand and forecast customer shopping and purchasing activities. In this lecture he will explore the concept of customer centricity (i.e., customer acquisition, retention, and development). The evening will begin with a brief review of Professor Fader’s recent book, Customer Centricity: Focus on the Right Customers for Strategic Advantage, followed by a deep dive into the profitability question: given the risks and costs of becoming customer centric, how can it be more profitable than the more traditional product-centric approach? Professor Fader will carefully examine the tactical underlying “building blocks” of customer centricity, and will point out subtle but important insights into their interplay. In addition, he will highlight a number of actionable suggestions to help managers make the most effective and efficient use of these “building blocks”. Professor Fader’s work has been published in a number of leading journals in marketing, statistics, and the management sciences. He has won many awards for his teaching and research accomplishments. $20 per member and $25 per guest for reservations made by Tuesday, October 21st. $25 per member and $30 per guest for late reservations. This five-star platinum club has remained an integral part of the Columbus community since its inception in 1912. Named on the National Register of Historic Places, the ACC is the premier Club in Columbus and has been visited by notable persons such as President George Bush, Senator John McCain, Katie Couric, and Chelsea Clinton. The Club devotes an impressive 40,000 square feet to its athletic facility which includes: cardiovascular and strength training equipment, an indoor pool, a jogging track, a whirlpool, and basketball, squash, and handball. After a workout members can relax in the spa comprised of two private massage rooms and a space for esthetics. And, the dining is exceptional. There are three restaurants located in the six-story building, the more casual Carmichael’s, the deli-style Buckeye Room, and the white tablecloth Grill Room. For reservations, call 614.221.3344

The idea for The Genesee Valley Club was conceived in 1885. Since then, it has stayed committed to providing its members an inviting and rewarding membership experience through its social, business and athletic activities. There are several options for dining—both casual and upscale—with the capability for private functions such as weddings. The Club’s athletic facility is second to none featuring an Olympic-sized swimming pool, an indoor tennis court, a double squash court, and a fitness center. Formerly a club for just men, membership is now available by invitation to both men and women of affability, good character and reputation who are deemed acceptable on their individual merits. As my time with TFA comes to a close, I have been preparing to move to Brazil on a Fulbright Scholarship. I have been able to chat with a few folks who have worked in Brazil or who have been awarded a Fulbright. Their insights have been invaluable. How has being a Penn Club member benefitted your life, personally? The Penn Club is a great place to meet your friends before going out for the night. The Club’s accommodations have made traveling to NYC infinitely more enjoyable. Do you have any advice for new Penn Club members on how to best utilize the Club? Don’t hesitate to reach out to fellow members!

Everyone is here for similar reasons and you should take advantage of all that your membership has to offer. What’s Next? I will be working in Switzerland this summer before heading to Brazil on a Fulbright Scholarship. When I return from Brazil, I am looking into joining the military, applying for admission to Penn’s Lauder Program, or pursuing a career in International Sales/Business.
