A short while back, we announced that the Penn Club of New York had been designated a historic landmark by the New York City Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission. At that time, we indicated that a plaque would soon be affixed to our building heralding our designation. Due to some production issues, the delivery of the plaque was delayed. I am now pleased to report that our plaque is now in production, and will soon grace our Penn Club property. Here is a mock-up of how the plaque will read:

through the verbiage that will appear on our plaque, I am sure that, just like me, you will be struck by our rich and storied past. When our building joined the other legends of 44th Street (i.e. the Algonquin Hotel, the Harvard Club, the New York Yacht Club, et. al.), it took its place in the history books of the world’s greatest city. Whenever you enter our Clubhouse, I hope you will share the same sense of excitement and pride that I feel each time I arrive at 30 West 44th Street. Last month, I referred to the obligation that our members have to introduce new members into the Penn Club. Along with our outstanding facilities and services, and our worldwide the reputation for quality and excellence, our status as a New York City Landmark is one more treasure that you can share with prospective members. November stands out as a month that is filled with excitement and exuberance, capped off by the Thanksgiving holiday. As we gather together to give thanks for all that we have, I do hope you will join with me in expressing our appreciation for this remarkable Club, with all that it does to contribute to the richness of our lives. My staff and I are truly pleased to be a part of your Penn Club experience. We look forward to welcoming you often to the Penn Club of New York, your home-away-from-home in New York. —Peter M. Book Group Luncheon Stoner | by John Williams Monday, November 14th, 12:00 p.m. Williams’ remarkable 1965 novel offers a window into early 20th century higher education with rich characterizations and seamless prose. Sent by his hard-scrabble farmer father to the University of Missouri to study agriculture, William Stoner is sidetracked by an obsessive love of literature and stimulated by a curmudgeonly old professor, Archer Sloane. Sloane helps Stoner avoid service in WWI, and Stoner eventually becomes an assistant professor. He then meets and marries a St. Louis beauty, Edith, who quickly subjugates her contemplative, passive husband. As decades pass, Stoner entrenches himself deep into the life of the mind, developing into a master teacher but never finding solace in the outside world. Stoner’s single joy is Grace, their daughter, whom Edith appropriates as a weapon in her very personal war against Stoner’s quest for inner peace. $49 plus tax and service charge per member and $54 plus tax and service charge per guest by Monday, November 7th at noon. $54 plus tax and service charge per member and $59 plus tax and service charge per guest for late reservations. There is an attendance minimum for this program to take place; early RSVPs are encouraged. No walk-ins. This program includes book discussion and full buffet luncheon with coffee/ tea and dessert.

Reciprocal Clubs Penn Club members have access to about 150 reciprocal clubs worldwide. Two such examples are the reciprocal clubs below.

Oxford & Cambridge Club — London, England

Rand Club — Johannesburg, South Africa

The clubhouse opened 1838 and was designed by Sir Robert Smirke, a leading architect. The Club’s facilities include over 40 bedrooms, an elegant Coffee Room (the traditional name for the principal dining room), two bars, two squash courts, and a maintained library of over 25,000 books. All in all, the Club is well-appointed to accommodate your leisure or business interests in a sophisticated setting with a unique charm. Visit the wine cellar with over 44,000 bottles of wines from the Old and New worlds and enjoy tea service served in the Drawing Room and Libraries. For guests with a competitive edge, play billiards, golf, or chess in the basement level. For reservations, please call 020.7930.5151 or e-mail [email protected].

The Rand Club was founded in October 1887. The Club’s colorful and often dramatic history is closely linked with the development of the world’s greatest goldfield and with the emergence of modern South Africa. The Rand Club was different from many of the great clubs established abroad in the second half of the 19th century because of the turbulent social, political and financial background of Johannesburg. The fact is that the Rand Club originated at the center of what became the greatest gold field the world has ever seen, filled with a cosmopolitan and colorful population, people of all nationalities, all drawn to the Transvaal by the glamour of gold and the dreams of fortune. Find your own gem in the library, which has over 10,000 volumes ranging from rare irreplaceable treasures to an updated repertoire. Please note the dress code. Short or long sleeved lounge shirt with or without a tie. No sandals, jeans, tracksuits, or golf shirts worn by men. Women, please dress smart casual. For reservations, please call 011.870.4260 or e-mail [email protected]. For a Letter of Introduction to any of our reciprocal clubs, please contact Barbara Nevels at 212.403.6620 or e-mail [email protected].

All programs require written reservations. Please mail, fax (212.403.6621), e-mail ([email protected]), or register on the Web site (www.pennclub.org) to reserve. E-mail [email protected] only for questions about events.

Stone Crab Week |

Robert Burns Supper |

Monday, November 7th to Thursday, November 10th. Let’s get cracking! Sorry for being crabby! In a pinch? For the week of Monday, November 7th to Thursday, November 10th, the Main Dining Room features a special stone crab menu for lunch and dinner. ❖ Seafood Chowder ❖ Cole Slaw Salad ❖ Stone Crabs with Fresh Spinach and Hash Brown Potatoes ❖ Key Lime Pie ❖ A Glass of House Wine

Friday, January 27th. Reception: 6:00 p.m. Dinner: 7:00 p.m.  The Penn Club will honor the spirit of Scottish poet Robert Burns at a traditional celebration of Burns’ birthday. Not for the fainthearted — but certainly not to be missed — the evening will include the parade of the Haggis, accompanied by reading of Burns’ poem “Address to a Haggis”—a mainstay of many Burns dinners. For the uninitiated, Haggis is a Scottish pudding comprised of organ meat, oatmeal and onions, traditionally cooked in a sheep’s stomach, which is ceremonially sliced open with a sword at Burns dinners. It is said to be an acquired taste. Fortunately, the rest of the evening will include a Scottish-inspired menu that would have caused Burns himself to wax poetic. Rest assured that the Penn Club will have enough fine Scotch whiskey on hand for you to invoke your own poetic impulses. Appetizer ❖ Scottish Smoked Salmon ❖ Celeriac and Apple Salad and Micro Greens Soup ❖ Cock a Leekie Soup Entrée ❖ Roast Tenderloin of Beef ❖ Braised Local Kale with Smoked Bacon Dessert ❖ Scottish Strawberry Trifle

$57.00 for lunch and $67.00 for dinner plus tax and service charge. Reserve your preferred seating time. For reservations call Tony Kontos at 212.403.6628 or e-mail [email protected] or RSVP online.
