NON-FICTION Hamed Abdel-Samad

Mohamed – Eine Abrechnung Muhammad - A Reckoning

Droemer, October 2015, 224 pages

Muhammad’s biography was written 200 years after his death – with political intention: Muslim princes were seeking to secure their positions and oppose Jesus with one of their own legitimised ruling redeemer figures. However, the ambivalent image of a figure, radically changing and suffering from psychic issues, has been maintained. Here the mild, there the violent Muhammad. In his biographical sketch, Hamed Abdel-Samad traces the fateful consequences that have grown from these traditions to this day – and why radical Islamists cite the ‘Prophet’ with the same right as secular and integrated Muslims.

The author Hamed Abdel-Samad was born in 1972 near Cairo and studied English, French, Japanese and Politics. He worked for USESCO, at the Institute for Islamic Culture at the University of Erfurt and at the Institute for Jewish History and Culture at the University of Munich. Was das HABEN mit dem SEIN macht What HAVING does to BEING Pattloch, October 2015, 320 pages

How different we humans are. Some go on consumption binges – they buy cupboards full, delight in owning material goods and draw self-affirmation from it. Others on the other hand could not care less about owning things – they are searching for a meaning in life and orientated towards unusual experiences that will help them along. The social psychologist Jens Förster shows very clearly under which influences our needs fall, why we follow our goals in life and whether they are actually suited to making us happy. He sounds out our sensitivities in today’s affluent society and on this basis develops a completely new theory on the relationship between Being and Having.

The author: Jens Förster, born in 1965, studied Psychology, Philosophy and German Literature. From 2008 onwards, he was a Professor for Psychology at the University of Amsterdam and at the same time, Director of the Kurt-Lewin Institute. Mantras

O.W. Barth, September 2015, 304 pages

What they mean, how to implement them, why they help

For centuries people have used power words, formulae or holy syllables in order to delve into their inner feelings and to resonate with the divine. Meditation using mantras helps to free oneself from the many disruptive influences to our awareness. This path builds upon the fact that the universe and all that lives in it, consists of sound vibrations. Mantras are ‘mind power encased in sound’. This mind power is used intensively in all cultures. Christine Stecher maintains a neutral perspective and does not only place the focus on the birthplace of all mantra practice: India. In fact, in the lexical part, she is able to present an overview that reflects the richness of the mantra world in all spiritual traditions. Due to the wealth of background information and the clear, practical instructions, the mantras become a helpful accompaniment in daily life.

The author: Christine Stecher works as a freelance editor and non-fiction author covering subjects such as health, holistic healing and spirituality. She first encountered mantras some twenty years ago through the Indian wisdom teachers Amma and Gurumayi. This awakened her interest for the Holy Mother Mary and the Christian tradition’s power formulae. As a practitioner of Kundalini yoga, she obtained a lot of experience with the energising effect of mantras.

It is a war for precious resources that are exploited aplenty in this bitterly poor country, resources that are necessary for every digital device on this planet. Martin, a young journalist from Berlin, travels to Congo for his first major research assignment. Shortly after his arrival he is taken hostage by the militia of a local warlord. To his surprise a businesswoman from Ruanda ransoms him – but not without a price. The inexperienced journalist falls into the ruthless hands of Russian oligarchs, Chinese investors and German arms dealers. Too late he realizes that he is only a bargaining chip in a geopolitical game of powers in which the distribution of raw materials for the 21st century is negotiated – and that his first big research assignment could be his last. "Gripping and highly relevant – and closer to reality than one would like." Sebastian Fitzek "A hot topic! This is the political thriller of the year." Andreas Eschbach
