WELCOME ADDRESS

COMMITTEES

The European Concrete Paving Association EUPAVE and the Czech Research Institute of Binding Materials Prague, in collaboration with the World Road Association PIARC, are pleased to welcome you to the 12th International Symposium on Concrete Roads, which is held in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic.

International Technical Programme Committee (ITPC) Chairman Alena Kohoutková, Czech Republic

The motto of this Symposium is: „Innovative solutions – Benefiting society“ • More than 100 interesting technical presentations in the field of concrete surfaces! • Three unique concrete technical visits directly in Prague and its surroundings! • Evening social event in one of the well-known and extraordinary art nouveau historical buildings in the whole Europe – Brevnov Monastery! • Magic one-hundred towers Prague is attracting you! Do not miss this unforgettable chance and visit Prague! The innovations not only refer to new developments of materials and concrete mixes but also to the shift from traditional motorways and trunk roads to infrastructure for other transport modes: rail, tram, bus, bicycles and pedestrians. The use of concrete in public spaces is becoming more and more popular, both in traditional and contemporary styles. Modern long life pavements are characterized by low environmental impact, low life-cycle cost and durable high-quality surfaces. Light coloured surfaces and rigid structures contribute to tackling of global warming through the positive aspects of albedo and reduced fuel consumption. These turn concrete roads into invaluable assets in terms of sustainability and a benefit for society. With your support and contribution, this four-yearly Symposium will result again in a successful top event, gathering experts from industry and government, engineers, infrastructure managers, researchers and other interested participants. All this takes place in the historic surroundings of magical Prague, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Visiting Prague, you will be impressed by this city of monuments and a wide range of architectural styles across generations, human mentality and beliefs. Since 1992, the historic core of the city has been listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In addition, Prague is a city full of life and a romantic delight by night. Welcome in Prague! TECHNICAL VISITS All mentioned technical visits are free of charge for the Symposium participants. The number of attendees will be limited. Prague Ring Motorway Date: September 25, 2014 Time: 13:30 from the Clarion Hotel Meeting point: 13:15 at the lobby /reception of the hotel The outcomes of an analysis of contributions of the ring road around Prague in the northern and southern parts of the city are very optimistic in terms of economy in time of its users. After the completion of this strategically important road travelling time around Prague will be reduced by tenths of minutes. It will also significantly reduce the load of traffic inside Prague – some of the roads in Prague reach the highest traffic volumes in the entire Czech Republic. The new motorway will benefit all drivers – and not just from Prague and around. The new section enables a smooth traffic flow and connects the motorway network between the country‘s western and eastern parts. Source: © Roads and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic

Prague Collectors (underground engineering networks) Date: September 25, 2014 Time: 13:00 from the Clarion Hotel Meeting point: 12:45 at the lobby / reception of the hotel The joint-stock company Kolektory Praha administrates and operates the collectors in the City of Prague. Collectors are underground passageways in which engineering networks are laid. The majority of the networks essential for the day-to-day processes of the city – waterlines, canalization, hot-water lines, gas lines, energy, telephone and optical cables – are found in collectors. At the present time, there are nearly ninety kilometers of collectors under the streets of Prague. The basic tasks of Kolektory Praha include: the administration, operation and maintenance of collectors; uninterrupted dispatching service and monitoring; twenty-four hour emergency services ensuring the solution of extraordinary operational situations, system failures and breakdowns in the collector network. The network itself was funded by, and is the property of, the City of Prague. The first excavated collectors were built in Prague‘s satellite housing estates back in the 1970s. In some sections, the diameter of the underground collectors bigger than that of Prague Metro tunnels. Source: © 2013 Kolektory Praha, a. s.

Prague Metro Line A Extension Date: September 25, 2014 Time: 13:30 from the Clarion Hotel Meeting point: 13:15 at the lobby / reception of the hotel The new section of Prague metro from Dejvická station to Motol station will be finished in 2014. It contains, among other structures, four new stations: Červený Vrch, Veleslavín, Petřiny and Motol. The name of the two tunnelling machines (Tonda and Adéla) were selected earlier by young patients from the Clinic of Paediatric Surgery, the Faculty Hospital in Motol. Their lengths exceed 100 metres, the diameter of the front shield is 6 metres and the weight of each of the machine amounts nearly to 900 tonnes. The two machines bring the TBM – EPB technology (Tunnel Boring Machine – Earth Pressure Balance) first time to the Czech Republic. Owing to its environmentally friendly character, this technology is suitable for tunnelling in conurbations, as proved by examples from the world (Rome, Istanbul, Sao Paulo, Madrid etc.). The works procedure differs from classical tunnelling methods by means of blasting or excavators and roadheaders, with the excavated opening being continually supported and subsequently provided with the final lining. This technology is based on disintegrating the ground at the tunnel face by a rotating cutterhead (fitted with four gauge disc cutters and ripper teeth, which can be replaced by disc cutters depending on the ground type). The muck subsequently passes to the extraction chamber, from which it is transported by a screw conveyor to conveyor belts.
