RATHKEALE COMMUNITY COUNCIL CHILDREN’S CORNER RCCCC All About Acid Rain for Kids, What Causes Acid Rain and What The Effects Are

If it is raining we grab an umbrella, a raincoat and maybe some boots and are protected from the falling drops of water. Rain looks clear and harmless as it falls from the sky, but is it really more dangerous than it looks? Acid rain is a problem for the environment and in many areas of the world the rain is more like vinegar instead of water. This is because the raindrops have pollutants in them and these chemicals create acids that can harm the Earth. Acid rain eats away at the paint and metal on buildings and cars. It also is destroying many of the world’s most beautiful relics like the Parthenon temple in Greece and even the Taj Mahal in India. Some of the forests have had trees killed because of the acid rain that falls. On top of some mountains the trees have stopped growing. There are even lakes and ponds that no longer have fish swimming about because the water contains too much pollution and acids.

forest trees and they become sick and get diseases. Many of the trees have lost their leaves and some have gone completely bald, stripped of leaves and bark. Germany is now busy trying to save the Black Forest. There are discussions about limiting how fast cars can go and people want to find other ways to decrease pollution. Even the neighbouring countries have agreed to limit pollution so that they too can help in this fight. The only way we can fight threats to the environment is by working together to save our planet. Even kids can help by being thrifty with natural resources, not littering and conserving energy whenever possible. Last Weeks Puzzle: What is so fragile that when you say its name, you break it? Answer; Silence. This Weeks Puzzle: What is the beginning of eternity, The end of time and space, The beginning of every end and the end of every place. The little bird told me that this week Corde is 8, Tom 12, Claire 11, Aine 9 and Aisling is 8.

The pollution and smokes from one country create acid rains in other countries because of the winds that spread the chemicals in the atmosphere. Normal rainfall has a little acid, but scientists have been taking samples from the land, plants and water here on Earth for years. This is how they can track the increase in the amount of acid in rain today. There is a large body of water in the Adirondack Mountains of New York known as Woods Lake. The fish had all died because of the acid rain that had “acidified” the water. Scientists have been able to dump lots of lime into the lake by using helicopters. Now that the water is better the lake has been restocked and the fish are growing.

Monday 29th April The Black Forest in Germany is another place that has been attacked by acid rain. People believe that the nearby authobahns (motorways) are chiefly to blame. The cars on these roads go very fast and create a lot of pollution. The winds then blow the smoky chemicals into the Black Forest where they collect in the clouds and fall to Earth in drops of rain. What the acid rain does is prevent the large evergreen trees from getting any nutrients. This is weakening the

Rathkeale & District Historical Society Reported by Patrick Coleman The poet John Betjamin remains surprisingly popular here in Ireland particularly in light of the fact that he served in Dublin during the 2nd. World War as both a diplomat and as a British spy. He must have been a most unusual spy for I seem to recall reading somewhere that after Churchill would have one of his occasional outbursts about Irish neutrality, Betjamin and one of his colleagues would arrange to place a letter in the London Times defending the Irish stance. On the occasion of his centenary of his birth I attended commemoration held in the Unitarian Church in Dublin, Stephen's Green. Both Poetry Ireland who organised the event and I must admit myself were surprised at the turn out. It was originally intended to hold the event in the Damer Hall (which is in the basement of the Church, and is where a number of Brendan Behan's plays were first staged) but given the crowds that turned up the venue was changed to the church itself. Even at that extra seating had to be arranged and many of the crowd were left standing outside. The event was arranged on the suggestion of Betjamin's daughter Candida Lycett-Green, who was born in Dublin in these years had suggested that such an event should be staged to commemorate her father. His position in Dublin was known to members of the IRA who planned to assassinate him. Diarmuid Brennan, the IRA army council head of civilian intelligence intervened saying that 'a man who could give so much pleasure with his pen couldn't be much of a secret agent' (See http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2000/apr/22/books.booksnew s). Some years ago on a visit to Newport, Co. Tipperary, the local historian Patrick Ryan began reading from one of Betjamin's poems about Ireland (it remained with Cornwall one of his favourite places). The poem 'The Small Towns of Ireland' seems to catch the essence of part of Ireland that too many of our poets either ignored or were highly critical of. I hope over the coming weeks to use this poem to investigate parts of the history of Rathkeale.

Junior Hurling – West league (Round-2) The Bog Garden was the venue last Tuesday night when St Marys hosted Templeglantine in the 2nd round of the West Junior Hurling League. Having beaten Croagh/Kilfinny in the opening round, we were intent on maintaining our winning start. The evening was a fine sunny one and perfect for hurling. Sean Harnett (Drom/Broadford) was the referee. Templeglantine got off to the better start, clipping over two points inside the first 2 minutes before Evan Lenihan fired a breaking ball to the net on 4 minutes to settle the home side. Two further Glantine points put them back ahead before Darren Jones raised a white flag for St Marys from a placed ball to level matters. Emmet Walsh flicked a high ball to the net to push us ahead and points from Darren and Mark Sullivan pushed us further ahead after 20 minutes. A brace of Glantine points sandwiched a pointed free from Darren Jones to complete the first half scoring. Half time score 2-04 to 0-06 in our favour. Gary Enright (for Tim O'Connor) and Conor Lyons (for Shane Hourigan) were introduced at half time for St Marys. The half was barely started when Glantine gave themselves a tonic, when our defence failed to deal with the ball following an excellent save from Sean O'Shea from a close-in free, resulting in the inrushing forwards scrambling the ball to the net. A further point Glantine on 5 minutes levelled matters before Lenihan scored a nice point for St Marys. Another tonic arrived for Glantine on 13 minutes when a 20 meter free was adjudged to have crossed the goal-line and gone into the net despite our goalkeeper’s (Willie Coffey) protestations that it had come in under the side netting. Following a consultation between the ref and the umpires the goal was awarded. St Marys replied with a free from Jones on 17 minutes which left us trailing by the minimum. A red card was shown to the Glantine full-back for an off the ball incident which swung things in our favour again. St Marys introduced some fresh legs when Adrian Stackpoole replaced John Enright and Brian Duggan replaced Evan Lenihan, but on 18 minutes, Templeglantine got another point to put themselves two ahead. However that was to be their last score. St Marys dominated the remainder of the game and a gem of a point from Marty Roche was followed by another from Darren Jones to level the game. Emmet Walsh struck for his second goal on 27 minutes before he was replaced by Liam Walsh and Roche completed the scoring on 28 Minutes with another good effort between the uprights. Final Score St Marys 3-09, Templeglantine 2-08 Team & Scorers: Willie Coffey, Martin Roche(0-2), Patrick Enright, Paul White, Patrick Wilmoth, Sean O’Shea, Timmy O’Connor, Mark O’Sullivan (0-1), Darren Jones (0-5 3f) Padraig Jones, Johnny Enright, Jason Jones, Evan Lenihan(1-1), Shane Hourigan, Emmet Walsh(2-0). BOXING Reported by Gavin Healy

LONG IS MASTER OF IRELAND ONCE AGAIN Cormac Long added the all Ireland cadet title to his tally of medals to bring this his 7th National title. What an achievement by the big lad from Rooskagh who now has booked his ticket to box for Ireland in the European championships which will be held in Russia in June .Cormac was there two years ago where he boxed the Russian champion and was less experienced at the time but this time he has that 2 extra years behind him which he said is going to make all the difference. He had 3 tough fights to get to the final last Sunday where he met Gary Maughan who he also met in the national final only a few weeks ago so he knew he was going to be another tough fight. Things weren't going his way even though he was leading after the first round but because of injury over the last couple of months his sharpness wasn't a hundred per cent or his fitness but his experience was there lucky enough and was getting through the rounds but it was in the last round when he finally got behind his jab as advised by his corner team that he started to pull away to a score of 13/7 at the final bell and so was his ticket to Russia. The committee want to say a massive well done to Cormac on his achievements and to his dad Henry who plays a big part in his career. Last weekend we had a total of 8 boxers in action in Kerry where we won a fantastic 6 fights with wins from Edward O'Brien, Jordan Ahern, Terry and Frankie O'Brien, Jimmy O'Neill and Jamie Harty and if the other two lads had listened to the advice of the corner they would also have been winners. The corner men's job it to see the faults in the opponent and tell there boxer so he can execute this in the next round and hopefully go on to win the fight but at times the boxer does his or her own thing which sometimes works but not enough so lessons learned from last weekend. This Friday see's our three girls Georgina O'Sullivan, Claire Kiely and Nell Fox head to Dublin looking for all Ireland gold so hopefully we can bring some more medals back to the club which so far this year we are one of the strongest in the country.
