S CHLOSS R EINHARTSHAUSEN THE RHEINGAU REGION Wine Estate Schloss Reinhartshausen and its vineyards are situated in the heart of the Rheingau region, a beautiful cultural landscape alongside the Rhine; castles, monasteries and wine estates are surrounded by vineyards along the river bank and majestically overlook the Rhine and far beyond.

It is here that the vines blossom – first and foremost the Riesling – which made the Rheingau worldfamous. Its climatic and geological particularities provide the vines with ideal growing conditions. This was already recognised by the Romans who cultivated wine in the region from the 1st to the 3rd century, followed by monasteries and monks, aristocrats and wine-growers. They all cultivated wine and laid the foundations to the reputation world-wide of the Rheingauer wines. A Wine that makes history History, Art, Cuisine and Wine – in Schloss Reinhartshausen these wonderful attributes of the Rheingau come together under one roof. Where in the 12th century it was the ancestral seat of the knights, a castle was later built in which over resided several noble houses over centuries. A distinctive influence on the characteristics of Schloss Reinhartshausen is credited to Princess Marianne of Prussia, a daughter of the first Dutch King, Wilhelm I., who took ownership of the Estate in 1855. This in her time unusually liberated lady changed Reinhartshausen into a cultural meeting place. Part of her collection of over 600 paintings and furniture can still today be admired at the castle. It is here that the former wife of Prince Albrecht of Prussia discovered her love for wine growing and she relentlessly encouraged its cultivation on her own Estate. The vintage of the oldest bottle of wine still amongst our treasures in the cellars dates back to her time. Marianne of Prussia was passionate about wines of high quality and the tradition of the Rheingau region, a legacy for which she is remembered today with gratitude.

At the end of the last century, entrepreneur Willi Leibbrand fully restored the estate and hotel and transformed it into an exclusive place to stay. Today, the Partners “Freunde von Reinhartshausen” continue their efforts to manage Hotel and Wine Estate in the spirit of history: highest standards of quality for most enjoyment.

THE WINE ESTATE Today, with vineyards spreading over more than 80 ha, Schloss Reinhartshausen is the largest Wine Estate in private ownership in the Rheingau. Its 15 vineyards count amongst the most renowned of the region: Marcobrunn, Nussbrunnen and Wisselbrunnen. The Schlossberg as well as the Island of Mariannenaue in the River Rhine are in sole ownership. Wine here is a memorable experience – from a happy every day wine to a wine of the finest and rarest quality for very special moments in life.

In our cellarage, modern techniques mingle with traditional wine-making. The high-quality grapes, handpicked from our vineyards, are with modern equipment carefully crushed and gently pressed. This procedure follows the development in the cellars in traditional “Rheingauer Stückfässern”. During the period of maturation the wines develop their individual blend and character typical for their grape variety and location. The result of a carefully coordinated process will be pure, fruity and fine wines that meet highest expectations.

FROM THE ISLAND UNSPOILED NATURE IN THE GLASS An Island in the River Rhine! The mighty River formed the Island of Mariannenaue with a mixture of sand and gravel on limestone and has created a unique climate on the four kilometre long strip of land: mild, even, drawn slightly towards Mediterranean climate. 400 year old trees line the shores like a gnarled fence. Wild boar and deer feel just as much at home there as grey geese, herons, cormorants and the rare “Schwarzmilane”.

In this pristine environment Riesling, White Burgundy, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc too find year after year exceptional growing conditions for early ripening. The Island epitomises the wine, its nature emerges from the wine. Floral notes complement the aroma; white blossom, fragrant citrus tones and orange blossom. They are young, refreshing originals which provide offer almost playfully an inspiring pleasure.

THE BEST FOUNDATIONS: ESTATE WINE EVERY DAY’S PLEASURE The wine lives in the Rheingau. It determines the picturesque landscape along the River Rhine; the vines grow from its shores up the mountain ridge and bring the various localities together into one community. It is part of everyday life of people who care for the plants throughout the year, harvest their fruit – and produce wine from it. The Estate Wine is the wine that mirrors best the personality of the Wine Estate, year after year, day after day, glass after glass. A conscientious selection from different vineyards evaluates the Terroir of the sunny south facing slopes. In the wine cellar the ripened grapes are carefully processed into a young, refreshing and lively wine which opens up pleasure at first sight. Elated, joyful, stimulating – this is how the character of the Estate Wine of Schloss Reinhartshausen presents itself to its consumer after the first taste. It always makes people feel keen to have a second glass and it is recommended for everyday pleasure as a discreet companion but always true to its taste.

THE MAGIC OF TERROIR FINE WINES AS CULINARY COMPANIONS

It is its origin which provides each wine its individual character. The Terroir! This expression is the combination of soil and climate of a vineyard, the quintessence that characterises the Rieslings of Schloss Reinhartshausen: Wisselbrunnen with a spicy note, Nussbrunnen with juicy fullness, Hohenrain with exceptional concentration. Moreover, the best vineyards are used to produce first growths to emphasise the elegance of the Schlossberg, the depth of the Marcobrunn and the strength of the Siegelsberg.

None of the flavours resembles the other. But each one finds a suitable partner amongst delicious meals. The wines of Schloss Reinhartshausen are charismatic companions which enrich a whole variety of tastes from the regional to the creative international cuisine. Whether in classic harmony or as an attractive counterpoint – they create a happy relationship between wine and food.

“EDELSÜSSE” (LUSCIOUS) RARITIES WINE FOR SPECIAL MOMENTS IN LIFE “Edelsüsse” (luscious) wines are like small wonders of nature which only come about in a few wine regions in the world. Where botrytis cinerea can settle in, a necrotrophic fungus which removes water from the grapes leaving behind the finest concentration of solids such as sugar, fruit acids and minerals. These small berries are very carefully selected and hand-picked in Schloss Reinhartshausen and tiny quantities of juice are gently squeezed out and then slowly and gently fermented.

It is in this way that the unique Auslesen and Trockenbeerenauslesen are produced, which have been fundamental to the fame of German wines in the past – and are in present times still a rarity which cannot be reproduced anywhere else in the world. The “edelsüssen” specialities of Schloss Reinhartshausen are intensive wines for very special occasions in life. Moments which one has to enjoy consciously and would like to remember for a life time.

V INTAGE R EPORT 2010 Like many other wineries the harvest 2010 in Schloss Reinhartshausen was clearly below the regular yield with just 40hl/ha. Cool nights in mild September prevented the continuous reduction of acidity. The start of the harvest was therefore delayed, waiting for the increase of the must weights. With precipitation setting in, end of September, the selective harvest started to counter the commencing botrytis. While beginning, most weights measured were at Kabinett level, quickly rising with the dry and sunny days in October, constantly achieving late (Spätlese) and selected (Auslese) harvest levels at the end of the harvest. The ice wine harvest on December, 8th in the vineyards Schlossberg and Hohenrain completed the session successfully. The question for comparable vintages often arises, however it can’t be answered. Even the senior and experienced vintners and cellar masters do not recall a vintage, which showed such a high increase of must weights while the acidity stayed evenly high. Towards the end of his working life our cellar master Matthias Craß, could therefore take advantage of his extraordinary professional knowledge and reduce the level of acidity in the wines while maintaining this year’s characteristic. The wines are zesty and fresh, with a great spiciness and fruitiness, and show the entire possible range: from the light Kabinett style to the high-class Auslese. V INTAGE R EPORT 2011 E A R LI E ST H A RV E S T

TI M E SIN C E

R E C O RD S !

Winter 2009/10 has been long and rich in snow and got followed by an extremely dry and warm spring. That led to a swift sprout of the vines in April and May. Unfortunately some of our burgundy vines and also vines on the island Mariannenaue got hit by a cold spell with frost in midmay. In spite of that we got a very early blossom (May 24th/25th) – 3 weeks prior to the long-time medium. A rained out summer did provide vines with the urgently needed water. By the beginning of September we did start the harvest of our burgundy grape varieties (Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) with great must weights between 85 and 91° Oechsle. The first Riesling has been picked at our vineyard site “Honigberg” at September 13th with 85° Oechsle. A couple of days later we did start to hand-pick our Pinot Blanc, Silvaner and Riesling at our island Mariannenaue. At this early time all the grapes did have reached already Kabinett level. All in all this has been the earliest harvest in the Rheingau in general since records! Caused by the humid and damp weather at the end of August and beginning of September the rot did start to spread out in the vineyards, especially in the vineyard sites around Erbach and Hattenheim. That did force us to cut off some rotten grapes and also to do a selective harvest. In order to delay harvest in our premium sites we also needed to cut off some leaves to provide good ventilation between the vines. Those expenses got rewarded through spectacular weather conditions (sunny and dry) during autumn so that we could continue a relaxed harvest. Unfortunately all this did lead again to a low crop yield (less than 50hl/ha) but with outstanding qualities (through all quality levels), like no other vintage before. This is certainly the result of a strictly selective harvest in combination with a more gentle way of grape processing, the acquisition of additional presses and the use of traditional methods of must clarification. For the grapes of our Fist Growth and noble sweet wines we did also start again to use traditional small basket presses. That leads to a very clear and pure must and great wines. The wines are pronounced fruity and are already drinkable at this early time of the year. The wellstructured acidity is very good adjusted to the wine body and lends them elegance. While our basic wines have been prepared for getting bottled in December, our premium wines will still mature on the yeast until spring. A large pay of Trockenbeerenauslesen with a must weight up to 260° Oechsle prepare special pleasure. They bring back memories of the big vintage 1911 in which the 2011 do join!

RESTAURANT WINE Issues 139 & 140 USA STAR LISTINGS SCHLOSS REINHARTSHAUSEN – Erstes Gewächs 2008 EDITION MARIANNE, ERBACHER ***** MARCOBRUNN QUALITATSWEIN 2009 ERBACH SCHLOSSBERG ***** QUALITATSWEIN Reinhartshausen, the largest privately owned estate in the Rheingau (200 acres of vineyards), is also one of its most underrated. Wines here have improved significantly in recent years, as these two Erste Gewächs demonstrate. Both are from top-rated vineyards. The 2008 Marcobrunn - named for Princess Marianne of Prussia, one-time owner of the estate – is medium bodied and intensely flavored; an exceptional dry Riesling with intense, complex character (peach skin, honey, caramel, apricot, black tea, rosehips, pineapple). It is concentrated and long on the palate, with a persistent finish. Shows modest botrytis character. First rate. 0.9% R.S. AP #028. The 2009 Schlossberg is supple, full bodied, ripely flavored, and dry with fine flavors, good balance, and a very long, persistent finish tasting of white peach, cherimoya, lily of the valley, passion fruit, and apple blossom. Very fine quality. 0.51% R.S. AP #039. [2013-2015]

SCHLOSS REINHARTSHAUSEN 2007 ERBACHER MARCOBRUNN TROCKENBEERENAUSLESE ***** An extraordinary TBA, and one of the very finest we’ve ever tasted (out of hundreds, going back three decades). 2010 Malcolm Gluck on wine Weingut Schloss Reinhartshausen 2007 Schlossberg Riesling grand cru. £25.80. 18 points. Finely textured (waxy), showing peach and citrus, with an echo of something exotic. It is like silk (with minute embroidery).

Weingut Schloss Reinhartshausen 2011 Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen Riesling trocken £12.,90, *** recommended, Weingut Schloss Reinhartshausen 2009 Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen Riesling trocken £12.,90, *** recommended, light, dry, taut wine- good now but really needs six months to a year to express itself. Confident, well-made and long.
