EMBO promotes excellence in life sciences in Europe by recognizing and fostering talented scientists. Since 1964, leading scientists are elected annually to become EMBO Members based on proven excellence in research. Members number more than 1700 today. 79 scientists from the EMBO membership have received the Nobel Prize. EMBO funding, training and networking activities attract thousands of scientists every year, promoting collaboration in all areas of life science research. Four peer-reviewed journals span a broad spectrum of the life sciences and reflect how research is shaping the world.
The European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC), founded in 1969, is the intergovernmental funding body for EMBO comprising 27 member states including most of the European Union and some of the neighbouring countries.
Both EMBO and EMBC are driven by a common commitment to research at the European level. Their joint activities are characterized by quality and encouragement of co-operation within the scientific community.

preface
2014 was an eventful year for EMBO as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of our organization. EMBO was officially founded on 12 July 1964. It has since helped to establish a community of outstanding scientists who have made significant contributions to advance the life sciences in Europe and other parts of the world. Our 50th anniversary year Maria Leptin included activities and events EMBO Director that featured some of EMBO’s many achievements. One of the highlights was a science and policy meeting held in Heidelberg in July as part of the celebrations. The meeting included talks from Robert-Jan Smits, Director-General of Research and Innovation at the European Commission, invited scientific speakers, and a panel discussion featuring the opinions of science ministers from Europe. In 2014, 106 scientists were welcomed to the EMBO membership in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the life sciences. The 106 new members included 50 scientists who have made exceptional contributions to neuroscience, ecology and evolution, disciplines that were selected as part of the strategic expansion of the EMBO membership for the anniversary year. A special membership meeting in October was the ideal opportunity to welcome all recently elected members to the organization. The EMBO Membership currently includes more than 1700 life scientists in the international community. 27 young scientists were selected as EMBO Young Investigators in 2014. The scientists join a network of 342

Young Investigators who represent some of the best group leaders contributing to European research. The programme received 202 applications in 2014. Thirteen per cent of the candidates who applied were selected and the new investigators originated from 11 countries. EMBO also supports scientists who wish to set up laboratories in countries looking to improve their research capacity. In 2014, eight researchers received Installation Grants for this purpose. The grants are helping the scientists to relocate and set up laboratories in the Czech Republic, Poland, Portugal and Turkey. 72 researchers have been funded by EMBO Installation Grants since the start of the programme in 2006. 247 Long-Term Fellowships and 284 Short-Term Fellowships were awarded in 2014. EMBO Long-Term Fellowships provide financial support for postdoctoral research in leading laboratories in Europe and around the world. Short-Term Fellowships, which support three-month visits to laboratories in Europe and elsewhere in the world, allow young scientists to gain experience in some of the latest scientific technologies. Our Courses & Workshops continue to be popular amongst the scientific community. In 2014, 96 EMBO Courses & Workshops were held and attracted more than 11,000 participants. The events took place in 23 different countries. EMBO’s Laboratory Management Courses, which provide training for postdoctoral researchers and group leaders, are in strong demand. 19 courses were held in 2014 and we continue to look for ways to expand their reach. As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, EMBO played a major role in organizing The FEBS-EMBO Conference 2014* in Paris, France, on 30 August to 4 September. The meeting, which was organized with FEBS and the French Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, brought together many leading researchers to discuss the latest scientific findings in
EMBO facts & figures 2014 | www.embo.org
the life sciences. More than 2500 participants attended the event. On the opening day, William Whelan, the first Secretary General of FEBS, revealed the early history and development of FEBS. Gottfried Schatz, former Secretary General of EMBO, described how the activities of EMBO had grown over the years. The meeting also included opening lectures from Catherine Dulac from Harvard University and Svante Pääbo from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. Dulac’s talk focused on how the mouse brain is geared for social interaction. Pääbo’s lecture addressed the origins and evolution of humans. Later in the year, we had a further confirmation of the value of our efforts to widen our membership when we witnessed the award of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to no less than three EMBO Members active in neuroscience. The 2014 recipients were Professor John O’Keefe, Director of the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre in Neural Circuits and Behaviour at University College London, Edvard Moser, Director of the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience and Centre for Neural Computation at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and May-Britt Moser, Director of the Centre for Neural Computation at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The prize was awarded for work that elucidated how the brains of larger organisms create maps of the space surrounding them and how these organisms can navigate their way through a complex environment. The EMBO Science Policy Programme has made further progress to advance science policies that will help to strengthen the global research community. A European Science Foundation-funded workshop on the use of non-anonymized human genome sequence was held at the end of the year and the official report on the workshop was published recently.1In collaboration with Thomas Lemberger, Deputy Head of
EMBO facts & figures 2014 | www.embo.org
Scientific Publications, a grant was received from the Brocher Foundation to support a workshop on the genomics of cognition in December 2015. Work continues to help develop the next version of Epigeum, an online training course for research ethics. Few organizations have solutions in place to help improve how scientists are trained in ethics. Epigeum has been well received by the scientific community and has the potential for wider development and use. In July 2014, EMBO’s SourceData project received a threeyear, € 420,000 grant from the Robert Bosch Foundation to support its work to improve access to the data in published scientific articles. Efficient access to primary research data could significantly speed up science. The SourceData team is developing tools to make the data in scientific publications easier to find and to allow scientists to use the data to their full potential. In November, the EMBC approved the Indicative Scheme for 2015-2019, a 2.5% increase versus the approved budget for 2014. I would like to thank all members of the EMBC for their renewed commitment to the activities of EMBO. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to the success of EMBO in our anniversary year and I look forward to many more achievements in the years to come. Sincerely
