Special Studies Monograph Series The Special Studies Monographs published by the International Cuban Philatelic Society (ICPS) is dedicated to special studies of specific areas of Cuban philately to supplement the content of its Journal of Cuban Philately. The intent of these monographs is to provide a venue for longer studies of specific areas of Cuban philately that would otherwise overwhelm a single issue of the journal or would have to be split across several issues, detracting from the continuity of their presentation. These monographs will also serve as an escape valve for the publication of accumulations of articles on the same area of Cuban philately that would otherwise prevent the regular journal from presenting a diversity of topics to satisfy the varied interests of ICPS members. Serie de Monografías de Estudios Especiales Las Monografías de Estudios Especiales de la Sociedad Filatélica Cubana Internacional (SFCI) está dedicada a presentar estudios de áreas específicas de la filatelia cubana para suplementar el contenido de su Revista de Filatelia Cubana. El objeto de estas monografías es proveer un vehiculo para estudios más extensos sobre temas determinados de la filatelia cubana que acapararían por sí solos un número de la revista o tendrían que publicarse en secciones a través de varios números, en detrimento a la continuidad de su presentación. Discovery of an Early U.S. Manzanillo Military Postal Station Postmark.  While preparing this monograph, I noticed a cover in Alfred Kugel's exhibit "American Intervention in the Caribbean 1898‐ 1934" with a postal marking identified as being an early or preliminary Havana U.S. Military Postal Station No.10  postmark,  dated November 13, 1898. This cover is shown in Figure 1 and in the front  page of this monograph. What caught my  attention about the cover was that it had a printed corner card from "J. Muñiz y Ca." in Manzanillo, Oriente Province, instead  of a Havana address. Later, while looking at Jack Thompson's collection "Cuba's Struggle for Political and Philatelic  Independence (1868‐1914)", I came across a second cover with the same postal marking also identified as being an early  postmark from the U.S. Military Postal Station No.10 in Havana, this time dated November 17, 1898.  What was remarkable  about this second cover was that it also had a Manzanillo corner card from the hardware store of Miguel Muñiz, S. en C., also  from Manzanillo (see Figure 2). This remarkable coincidence of return addresses in Manzanillo started me questioning  whether the postmarks on these covers were really from the U.S. Military Postal Station No.10 at Havana. It seemed more  plausible that the postmarks on these covers were really early postmarks from the U.S. Military Postal Station No.6 at  Manzanillo. Confirmation of this suspicion came when I looked at the collection "U.S. Military Postal Stations in Cuba" of Dr.  Yamil H. Kourí, Jr., where I found another example of the same cancellation on a piece also dated November 17, 1898, and  also being ascribed as being an early postmark from the Havana military station. However, in the text describing the  postmark I noticed the following statement: "The first major [U.S.] forces arrived on November 26 [at Havana]". That  statement confirmed my suspicion that these cancellations were NOT early Havana military postal station postmarks but  rather early Manzanillo postmarks. They couldn't be from Havana if the U.S. troops had not even arrived in Havana until  November 26 !!!  On the other hand, U.S. troops arrived in Manzanillo early in October and Philip E. Baker in   (see bibliography) places the opening of the Manzanillo military postal station on October 5, although the official date  reported in  and  for its opening was December 1. As you can gather from the tables of opening and  closing dates of the U.S. Military Postal Stations in Cuba on pages 36 and 37, there is great variability in the reported dates  and much research still to be done to try to establish them with more certainty.   

Descubrimiento de una marca postal preliminar  de la Estación Postal Militar Americana de Manzanillo.  Mientras preparaba esta monografía, me llamó la atención un sobre en la colección de Alfred Kugel "Intervención Americana  en el Caribe 1898‐1934" con una marca postal identificada como marca preliminar de la Estación Postal Militar Americana  No.10 de La Habana, con fecha del 13 de noviembre de 1898. Mostramos ese sobre en la Figura 1  y en la portada de esta  monografía. Lo que me llamó la atención del sobre fue que lleva el remitente impreso "J. Muñiz y Ca." de Manzanillo, en la  Provincia de Oriente, en vez de una dirección de La Habana. Más adelante, revisando la colección de Jack Thompson, "La  Lucha de Cuba por su Independencia Política y Filatélica (1868‐1914)", encontré otro sobre con la misma marca postal  también identificada como una marca postal preliminar de la misma Estación Postal Militar Americana No.10 de La Habana,  esta vez con fecha del 17 de noviembre de 1898. Lo interesante de este segundo sobre es que también lleva el remitente de  la "Ferretería y Locería de Miguel Muñiz, S. en C." de Manzanillo. Esta coincidencia tan particular de remitentes de Manzanillo  me llevó a dudar de que las marcas postales en estos sobres fuesen en realidad de la Estación Postal Militar Americana No.10  de La Habana. Lo lógico sería que fuesen marcas postales preliminares de la Estación Postal Militar Americana No.6 de  Manzanillo. Confirmé esta sospecha revisando la colección de "Estaciones Postales Militares Americanas en Cuba" del Dr.  Yamil H. Kourí, Jr., donde encontré otro ejemplo de la misma marca postal en un fragmento también fechado el 17 de  noviembre de 1898, cuyo origen nuevamente se le asignaba a estación militar de La Habana. Sin embargo, también noté que  en el texto describiendo esta última marca postal, se indicaba que las tropas americanas no entraron en La Habana sino hasta  el 26 de noviembre. Esa información confirmó mi sospecha de que dichas marcas postales NO eran marcas preliminares de la  estación militar de La Habana, sino marcas postales preliminares de la estación militar de Manzanillo.  ¡¡¡No podían ser de La  Habana si las tropas americanas no habían entrado en la ciudad sino hasta el 26 de noviembre!!! Por otro lado, las tropas  americanas llegaron a Manzanillo a principios de octubre y Philip E. Baker en  (ver bibliografía) pone la fecha de  apertura de la estación postal militar de Manzanillo el 5 de octubre, aunque la fecha oficial reportada en  y   es el 1 de diciembre. Como se puede ver en las tablas de apertura y cierre de las estaciones postales americanas  en Cuba en las páginas 36 y 37, hay gran variabilidad en las fechas reportadas y será necesaria mucha más investigación para  poder establecerlas con más exactitud.

Classification of the Postal Markings of the United States Military Postal Stations in Cuba Clasificación de las Marcas Postales de las Estaciones Postales Militares Americanas en Cuba In order to better understand the postal markings of the United States Military Postal Stations in Cuba, I decided to try to classify them into easily identifiable categories according to their most salient characteristics. Following is the classification that resulted from examining an archive of some of the more salient collections of these postal markings that have been assembled. Some of the postal markings are extremely rare and for some of the military military postal stations no surviving postal markings have been found (Daiquirí (as official postal station No.2), Colón, Santo Domingo, and Unión de Reyes). After presenting the classification, illustrations of each of the postal markings listed in the classification are shown. Para tener una vision mejor de las marcas postales de las Estaciones Postales Militares Americanas en Cuba, decidí tratar de clasificarlas de acuerdo a los razgos más sobresalientes de cada marca postal. A continuación presentamos la clasificación que desarrollé basada en un inventario de las marcas postales en algunas de las mejores colecciones de estas marcas que se han formado. Algunas de estas marcas postales son extremadamente raras y las de algunas estaciones postales no se han encontrado hasta la fecha (Daiquirí (como estación postal oficial Núm.2), Colón, Santo Domingo, y Unión de Reyes). No items are known to have survived to date from Military Postal Station No.2 officially established at Daiquirí on 1 December 1898. The only ilustration of a postal marking from this military postal station comes from the study "Cuban Postmarks" by Antonio Barreras published in Revista de Filatelia Cubana early in the 20th Century. It is a facsimile of a 4-line receipt marking shown as Figure #253 on page 39 of the March 1903 issue of that journal that we reproduce here. No se conoce ninguna pieza que haya sobrevivido hasta la fecha de la Estación Postal Militar No.2 establecida oficialmente en Daiquirí el 1 de diciembre de 1898. La única ilustración que conocemos de esta estación proviene del estudio de Antonio Barreras "Marcas Postales de Cuba" publicado en la Revista de Filatelia Cubana a principios del siglo XX. Se trata de un facsimil de una marca de recibo de cuatro líneas mostrado en la Figura #253 que se encuentra en la página 39 del número la revista de marzo de 1903 y que ilustramos aquí.
