SPRING 2013

Gift to Remember Kassie

After touring the Family House and its seven available guest rooms, the Hagan family and friends lovingly selected Room 310 to underwrite as the permanent legacy to their beloved family member and friend Kassie Hagan DiGiorgio Vannoy.

Maureen was referring to the family’s first encounter with transplantation in 1999 when Chris Hagan, Kassie’s brother, received a life-saving heart transplant. Prior to receiving his transplant, Chris was told he would be on the waiting list for

Kassie grew up in a large and loving family in West Chester, Pennsylvania. As she celebrated her 43rd birthday surrounded by family and friends, she suffered a massive brain hemorrhage and was rushed to the hospital. During this crisis, her family reflected on her generous and giving personality, and her wishes to be an organ donor. On Sunday, October 30, 2005, after learning Kassie had no hope of survival, the family fully supported her decision to become an organ donor and hoped that Kassie’s gifts would give other families the gift of life for their loved ones. The Hagan Family was no stranger to Gift of Life. Kassie’s sister, Maureen Doran, the eldest of the ten children explains “Our family has been blessed to be on the giving side of organ donation as well as the receiving side.”

The Hagan family and friends present a check in the amount of $25,000 to Gift of Life Family House to underwrite a guest room in memory of Kassie Hagan DiGiorgio Vannoy.

a heart as the result of being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. “Most of the siblings live in West Chester, a suburb of Philadelphia, and had to commute regularly to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania – not only our brother the patient, but our entire family as well. We would frequently carpool and we soon recognized how fortunate we were to have transplant hospitals practically in our own backyard.” Today, Chris is healthy and enjoying his life with his wife Maureen in Downingtown, PA. He is a loving father to two children and three stepchildren. The Hagans organized a fundraiser to keep their sister Kassie’s memory alive and celebrate the “gift of life” on October 26, 2012, which would have been Kassie’s 50th birthday. “Kassie was a unique individual – so full of life – and in addition to a large family, she had many friends all asking if the family was going to do anything to share Kassie’s love of life and pay tribute to her. continued on Family House page 2

A GIFT TO REMEMBER, continued from Family House page 1

Kassie would have turned 50 if she were still with us. We thought a fundraising event would be the perfect opportunity. So we organized a golf outing and dinner expecting to raise about $10,000 but instead, we raised $25,000! Enough to underwrite a guest room in Kassie’s memory.”

Gift of Life Family House is providing to those in need and we are honored that we can be a part of keeping its doors open for the many families going through the transplant process.” The event was attended and supported by a very special guest – retired Air Force Col. Darnell Waun, the recipient of Kassie’s liver. Before his transplant, Darnell was battling an autoimmune disease called primary sclerosing cholangitis and was placed on the waiting list for a new liver in 2005. Darnell was on the list for 7 months when he received the call that a liver was available, Kassie’s liver, which was successfully transplanted at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital on October 31, 2005.

The family named the event, “Kassie’s Gift of Life Memorial Golf Outing.” The Hagan siblings, their 27 children, and hundreds of their family members and friends attended “Kassie’s Gift of Life Memorial Golf Outing”, hosted at the Paxon Hollow Country Club, in Media, PA. Participants enjoyed golf in the morning. They dined, danced, and tried their luck winning beautiful raffle baskets in the auction. Philadelphia-based comedian and radio personality, Joe Conklin, “The Man of a Thousand Voices” and Hagan family friend, donated his talents and performed during dinner. The event’s proceeds benefited Gift of Life Family House, a “home away from home” located in Philadelphia that provides lodging, meals and supportive services transplant patients and their families in need.

The Hagan and the Waun families exchanged anonymous letters on Christmas Eve, two months after Darnell’s surgery. On the second anniversary of Darnell’s transplant, the two families met face-to–face for the first time. After their initial meeting the families met several more times, and have become close friends.

“There are many great charities out there, but where would the money we raise do the most?” asked Maureen, “It didn’t take long for our entire family, including Kassie’s two children, to select Gift of Life Family House. There are so many patients and families living hours (and states) away from our great Philadelphia transplant hospitals, and our family, continuing to celebrate the gift of life our brother Chris received, believed that Gift of Life Family House was the best place to donate the funds we raised in Kassie’s memory. We have seen first-hand the wonderful facility and good works

TOP 10 Transplant Caregiver Tips Caregiver tips are provided by transplant caregivers who previously stayed at the Family House during their transplant process. If you have questions about any of these tips or need additional support please email [email protected].

1. Be patient. The transplant process is like a rollercoaster and sometimes

it might feel like you will never get off. Try to take one day at a time and do the best you can. 2. Talk about it. Get support from other caregivers in a casual setting or a support group!! You can also talk to a social worker or another professional privately. 3. Use your faith and pray. 4. Educate yourself. Always ask the doctors, nurses, and social workers questions if you don’t understand. Read about transplant on websites like www.UNOS.org or www.TransplantLiving.org. 5. Keep a journal (personal or medical). The medical terminology, treatment plans and medication lists can seem very overwhelming. Journaling helps keep you and the patient on track, ask questions and write down the answers. You may feel less stressed and more confident in what is expected. 6. Find all the resources you can!! Talk to a social worker about available resources for travel, lodging, finances, emotional or physical health, etc. 7. Self-care!! If you don’t take time for yourself, you may compromise your ability to take care of the patient. 8. Let people help you and ask for help. Many friends and family want to help but don’t know how – let them know what you need and be specific. 9. Try to stay calm. Try relaxation exercises like deep breathing or yoga. 10. Find a way to keep laughing and make room for lightheartedness.

HOME COOK HEROES

Without the help of the Home Cook Heroes volunteers our families would not be able to enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal every night, or eat a warm breakfast before starting the day. The Home Cook Heroes volunteers do not just bring food to the Family House; they bring warmth and kindness that all guests appreciate. Seeing a group of friendly smiles serving dinner as our guests return to the Family House from the hospitals helps to boost their morale and positivity. The Family House is so grateful for all of the time and energy our volunteers commit to the Home Cook

Heroes program. The volunteers’ compassion and eagerness to help allows the Home Cook Heroes program to grow, and also provides our guests with the comfort in knowing that so many people care about them. 2012 was an amazing year for Home Cook Heroes, and the Family House is excited to see what the rest of 2013 will bring! Thank you to all the Home Cook Heroes volunteers who generously donate their time to serve meals to our transplant patients and families who call Gift of Life Family House “home.”

Family House

Meet the Orellana Family We are Tatiana and Steve Orellana from Englewood, NJ. We have been in Philadelphia since October 4, 2012 when our daughter, Leiya Elise, was transferred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for further management of her pulmonary hypertension that was diagnosed shortly before her hospital admission. After arriving at CHOP Leiya was also diagnosed with pulmonary vein stenosis and was listed for a double lung transplant on December 5, 2012.

very pleasant, and often we feel like we are a part of a bigger family that understands what we are going through. This is what makes staying at the Family House extra special. We feel welcomed here. It is also very comforting to be around others who may be feeling what we are feeling and can relate to the fear and frustration of having a loved one who is sick or hospitalized. It is, indirectly, a form of support, which we didn’t expect to find when we came. We thought it would be a place where we could stay while our daughter was hospitalized. However, the Family House has proven to be a lot more than just “accommodations.” The sense of unity and caring the house provides is more important to us than just a comfortable bed to sleep in! And here – at the Family House – we get it all.

We arrived at Gift of Life Family House soon after Leiya was listed and we are very grateful to have the opportunity to stay here as it has become our everyday retreat from the hospital. The house is inviting with very comfortable accommodations. We are very happy to be able to get a good night’s rest in the midst of all the hospital chaos that we endure every day from having Leiya admitted in the ICU.

The Family House staff and volunteers are amazing at what they do. They make a big difference in how we feel after coming back from a grueling day at the hospital. To all the lovely people who make me smile amongst all this pain, we thank you always, and we are happy to be a part of such a wonderful community!

Besides the fact that the Family House is such a clean and comfortable environment, the staff and volunteers make our stay 7
