District Professional Learning Opportunities 2015-16 Overview This document provides both teachers and school-based leadership a listing of the current and upcoming professional learning opportunities being provided through the Division of Teaching and Learning. These opportunities will be grounded in the established best practices listed below for effective professional learning. The categories included are (1) District-Level Professional Learning; (2) School-Based Administrator Professional Learning /Meetings; (3) Curriculum Coaching Professional Learning; (4) General Teacher Professional Learning; (5) Reading Professional Learning; (6) Mathematics Professional Learning; (7) Science Professional Learning; (8) Advanced Placement Professional Learning; (9) Learning Support Professional Learning; (10) Technology Professional Learning; (11) Fine Arts Professional Learning; and (12) Workforce Education Professional Learning.

Supporting Research Effective professional development has long been linked to increases in student achievement and teacher quality with sustained and intensive professional development being more likely to have an impact on enhanced teacher knowledge and skills, and ultimately student achievement than shorter professional development activities (Hanushek, Kain, & Rivkin, 1998; National Center for Education Statistics, 2000; Garet et al., 2001; Yoon et al, 2007; Center for Public Education, 2013). Research suggests that effective professional learning is guided by the following principles: 1. The duration of professional learning must be significant and ongoing to allow time for teachers to learn a new strategy and have time to incorporate implementation. 2. There must be support for a teacher during the implementation stage that addresses the specific challenges of changing classroom practice. 3. Teachers’ initial exposure to a concept should not be passive, but rather should engage teachers through varied approaches so they can participate actively in making sense of a new practice. 4. Modeling has been found to be a highly effective way to introduce a new concept and help teachers understand a new practice. 5. The content presented to teachers shouldn’t be generic, but instead grounded in the teacher’s discipline (middle and high school teachers) or grade-level (for elementary school teachers).
