Key Stage 2 – Tudor Court Leet Activity Day Your group can learn about this historic system of landlord rule (and how it still applies in the village of Hutton-le-Hole) by attending a make-shift court. Designed to allow the local lord to rule over his tenants and serfs, the Court Leet enabled him to make and enforce many local ‘laws’. There would be fines and taxes to pay as well as the opportunity to resolve any ongoing disputes. Hutton-le-Hole fell under the rule of Spaunton Court Leet and still does today! Morning session In the morning, pupils will be divided into ‘family groups’ and given jobs common to Tudor life. Undertaking some relevant tasks within the museum’s grounds this might include building cruck frames, grinding corn or making reed candles.

Afternoon session During the afternoon, your whole group will gather together in the Manor House for the Court Leet. Each ‘family’ will be paid for their labour before paying back their tithes and rent – and possibly facing any necessary punishments for breaking the law! Teaching staff are not exempt from fines either…
