Principal’s Welcome Why come to College? For most people it’s about gaining the skills they need for the job they want. It is also about learning in a different way, playing to your strengths so you can achieve your potential and putting you in the driving seat of your learning. We will help you develop your skills in real work environments with staff who have worked in, or still work in, the business or sector you wish to enter. We have industry standard facilities and equipment so that you can develop the skills required for the job you want. At College you will not be sat in a classroom being talked at, but you will undertake projects with community groups, charities, employers and the College itself, or helping to run our real working environments. These activities will help you to build up a CV which will impress. You also gain further insight into your chosen area through visits (at home and abroad), by hearing from inspirational guest speakers and by undertaking work placements and voluntary activities linked to your ambitions. We hope you will also take full advantage of everything that is on offer at College such as getting involved in sporting activities and attending shows and gigs. You can also take advantage of our real working environments as a customer at special student rates; these include a restaurant, cafés, a theatre, a fitness suite, shops, a dance studio, chill-out areas and an urban spa. We have an active Student Union and there is always something going on at our Campuses to make learning with us an exciting experience. West Cheshire College achieved 14 outstanding grades in its 2010 Ofsted inspection. Our mission, ‘access to opportunity’, shows that we value all our learners equally and that we believe everyone should be supported to achieve their full potential. We are proud to have won national awards for practical teaching and practical learning and inclusion. We pride ourselves in doing things differently - are you ready to do something different too? Alena Johnson Alena has showcased her fashion collections across the globe in Paris, London and China. She said: “Because I’m from the Czech Republic I didn’t have the right qualifications to get into university. So I opted to study at West Cheshire College first. I really enjoyed my time there and my tutor was amazing.” Alena went on to achieve a first-class honours degree in fashion design at Liverpool John Moores University. Alena adds: “I finished my degree in 2011. In June that year I exhibited my collection at Graduate Fashion Week in London and then had a stand at the Liverpool Design Show. I also entered a competition and was chosen as one of 10 designers to exhibit my collection at the Who’s Next Prêt-à-Porter trade show in Paris. “As a result of the show, I gained a customer from Kuwait who commissioned me to design a €30k exclusive collection for her.

Job: Fashion Designer College Course: Art and Design (Fashion)

“I have also just returned from China. I won the opportunity to be one of only five designers from Europe to exhibit my clothes over there, which was a great experience too.” Alena’s advice to people looking to break into the fashion industry would be to simply work hard. She said: “Anybody wanting to become a fashion designer needs to work hard as the industry is really competitive. But the hard work really pays off as I am now doing something I love.”

I love watching films and I was really interested in learning more about how films are produced. I went to sixth form before coming to study here but I didn’t really like it. I much prefer coming to the College as the tutors are great. They give you lots of independence and treat you like an adult. The course is really enjoyable. We do a lot of practical work. At the moment we are creating corporate videos as well as music videos – it’s diverse and a lot of fun. My favourite thing about the course is that it’s all coursework and there are no exams. This definitely suits my style of learning better. There are lots of different groups of people at College and I’ve made a lot of friends here. Course: Music Practice BTEC Extended Diploma Career Goal: I would love to be a full time musician Likes: The usual going out with friends and having a good time, dance and fashion Dislikes: I’ve never really been academic, subjects like maths and science are not my strong point

Music is something I’ve always enjoyed. I never studied music at GCSE but when I looked at the courses available at College, it really appealed to me. I love singing and I like the fact that the course is very practical. We do a lot of rehearsing and I get the chance to sing all the time. As well as the practical side, we also study the culture of music and the history and theory of different music genres such as blues and reggae. We also get the chance to meet people from the industry. Pete Waterman visited the College and I had the chance to meet him and ask questions, which was great. Everybody at the College is really helpful and the recording studio facilities at the Campus are fantastic it’s just like a real studio.

When he was at gigs, he developed an interest in lighting and staging and decided to pursue a career in technical theatre instead. Dale studied at the College for two years and left in June 2011. He said: “When I first left College I was freelancing for a company in Warrington which was set up by a former College student.

“I then got a job as a Community Theatre Technician at Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse Theatres where I teach young people. I really enjoy working with young people and working in technical theatre - so to combine the two is an ideal job for me.” Dale believes going to the College helped him get a job. He said: “The tutors were really helpful and they have a lot of contacts in the industry. They helped me secure placements, which gave me great experience.”

I like the whole College experience as everybody here is really nice and the building is very modern with a really nice feel to it. The tutors are friendly and we regularly have one-to-one meetings with them when we talk about the course. We can also discuss any problems and they have provided me with helpful advice on my next step. When I finish I’m going on to start a four-year business studies degree course at Manchester Metropolitan University which includes a placement year working in industry.

Course: Fashion Retail ABC Diploma Career Goal: To be a Visual Merchandiser Likes: I volunteer every week with the Girl Guides and I like spending time with my friends Dislikes: Bad mannered people I’ve already secured a job as a Visual Merchandiser at the new Marks & Spencer store in McArthurGlen’s Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet. When I started the course my career goal was to work my way up in retail and become a General Manager. During the course I found out more about the role of a Visual Merchandiser and it made me rethink my career ambitions. Visual merchandising is crucial for a store - the way a store is presented and displayed makes a huge difference. We’ve learned loads of practical skills that we need for the workplace - such as how to dress a mannequin and how to put colours and different styles together. My favourite part is that we regularly go into shops and put the window displays together. We’ve had experience dressing windows at Designer Kidz and Tripp at Cheshire Oaks and also at the College shop.

Course: Travel and Tourism OCR National Extended Diploma Career Goal: To become an Air Stewardess for Virgin Atlantic Likes: Travelling and going on holiday Dislikes: The bad weather and the rain

I chose to do the course as I love travelling. The course is a mix of both practical and theory work. We cover a range of topics including hospitality, the cruise industry, working as a holiday representative, UK visitor attractions and events. I love the fact that the College has a mock aircraft cabin - it is amazing and has the same facilities as a real plane. We have held different events and presentations on the plane such as showing prospective students around during the open evening. For the events we dress in our travel and tourism uniform, which is really nice and brings a professional feel to the event. The tutors are lovely and have been so helpful. They treat you with respect and like an adult, which is totally different to the way we were treated at school. I have been on a trip to Barcelona with the College which was a great experience. We went sightseeing and visited Spanish restaurants to experience the culture - I learned a lot about the city from the trip.

Camille Santos Camille landed her dream job as a Children’s Representative for Thomas Cook in Turkey after studying two different courses at College. Camille said: “I did a cabin crew and resort representative course at the College. When I finished I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I liked working with children so I enrolled on a childcare course.” Camille’s favourite thing about the College was getting a lot of hands-on experience. She said: “On the travel and tourism course we spent a week in Tenerife shadowing Thomas Cook Reps. I got an insight into their job roles and also gained experience dealing with customers and helping to run activities. “Whilst I was on the childcare course I worked in a local primary school. So I had experience of working both in the travel industry and with children. This really benefitted me when applying for my job. Thomas Cook was really impressed with my experience.

Job: Children’s Rep, Thomas Cook

“I now work in a five star hotel in Turkey running kids’ clubs for Thomas Cook guests. Working in the luxury hotel is really nice and I enjoy doing my job. There is a lot of career progression with Thomas Cook so I’m hoping to have a management role in the future.”

College Course: Travel and Tourism / Childcare

Camille adds: “People think the travel industry is hard to get into. But if you work hard, get the right qualifications and get some experience then getting a job isn’t that difficult. Anyone who wants to do it should - the world is your oyster!”

I’ve always wanted to follow in my mum’s footsteps of working with children with special needs. I decided to come to College as it’s a totally different learning style compared to school. You have a lot more freedom and the emphasis is very much on independent learning. The course includes lots of different placements so you get hands-on experience of working in nurseries and schools. I have just completed a placement at Dee Banks School which caters for children with a wide range of special needs and learning difficulties. I learned so much and the experience has really helped build my confidence. I currently work as a Carer for a young girl who has special needs. It means that I’m able to put the things I learn through my course into practice.

I was always undecided about what I wanted to do as a career. When my mum retrained as a Social Worker I started to develop a real interest in the subject myself. I left school half way through Year 10 to be home educated as I was being bullied. I decided to come to College as I didn’t want to go to the sixth form at my old school. I have had a much better experience coming to College and it was definitely the right move. One of my favourite things about the College is the fantastic facilities. In our area we have a SimMan (which we call Stanley!) - he’s basically a realistic patient which bleeds, sweats, he can have a fit or a heart attack. It means we’re able to put ourselves in realistic patient scenarios which will help us to deal with the real thing in the future.

I came over to England from Poland in 2008. I joined West Cheshire College to study English and Vocational Studies before starting the two-year sports course. The course covers a variety of topics such as sports psychology and sports coaching. Sports coaching is definitely my favourite part of the course – we get to plan and deliver coaching sessions which is great. To get more experience in coaching, I volunteer as a football coach for several local junior football teams. I have also shadowed the coaches at Vauxhall Motors Football Club to see how they coach their players. I love football, but was never very good at playing it. That’s’ why I decided to focus on coaching. I have been accepted to do a degree in sports coaching and development at John Moores University. Jack Titlow Jack recently finished College and has already secured a job as a bricklayer. Jack said: “I work on a bricklaying site with J Hollingsworth Ltd and my long-term career goal is to become a Project Manager. “My day-to-day role includes laying bricks to create the base of buildings. I’ve already worked on a variety of school extension projects on different sites across the North West.” Jack adds: “The building site is a great environment to work and I get on well with everybody. The other people on the site have a lot more experience but I’m not too intimidated. Everyone helps me out and gives me tips and advice. “Working on a building site is hard work and there are a lot of early mornings. Some days you do finish early so the working day is balanced.

Job: Bricklayer

“It is very rewarding job. It’s a great feeling when you see a finished building and know you have helped create it.

College Course: Construction

“The good thing about my job is that it keeps you fit. The only disadvantage about the job is that you have to stop when it starts raining.”

Gardening or working on a car with my stepdad Dislikes: B ad weather and the rain - I much prefer being in the sun! I’m not the type of person who wants to sit behind a desk and just do theory. I like making things and getting stuck in. You learn so much more from doing that. Engineering is something I have always had an interest in. I decided to come to College as my brother came here. He really benefitted from the real-life training that a vocational course such as this offers. A lot of the course in the first year was practical so I quickly developed my skills. The College arranged for us to visit Unilever’s Ellesmere Port plant so we could get experience of the workplace. I’ve also learned about the business side of engineering – for instance employment law and also the importance of health and safety, including what Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) you need to wear. My favourite thing about the College is the people. I have all my mates here and the tutors are really helpful - they treat you like an adult and respect you.
