Developing Unconventional Oil (DUO) Conference and Exhibition 2011 Show Report The shift to oil has become a stampede, and more than 2,000 attendees at the 2nd annual Developing Unconventional Oil (DUO) Conference & Exhibition packed talks on oil-prone reservoirs. The May event was held in Denver, in the heart of the Rocky Mountain region. Speakers outlined major well successes, ramped up drilling programs and infrastructure challenges in the rapidly expanding Bakken play in North Dakota and Montana. Private-company executives introduced the Mississippi Lime play of Oklahoma and Kansas, one of the newest on the radar screen, to the audience. The complexities of the developing Niobrara play in Colorado and Wyoming and the Monterey in California were discussed in detail. The evolving technologies to complete horizontal wells in tight oil reservoirs were featured in a panel discussion. Methods and strategies that work in gas shales do not necessarily work the same way in oil shales, and attendees were eager to hear the latest thoughts from experts in the field. “There are more issues with understanding permeability and multi-phase flow with the liquids-rich unconventionals,” said Bob Shelley, director of engineering and competitive analysis at StrataGen Engineering. Globally, the potential of oil-prone unconventional reservoirs is tremendous. Still, Paul Favret, chief executive of Source Energy Partners, noted that “development will require patience, persistence and politics.” As the industry continues to grow its knowledge of how to extract oil from these challenging plays throughout North America and abroad, old producing regions are being rejuvenated and new areas are being uncovered.
