FELLOWSHIPS AND AWARDS: De Jonge Akademie (KNAW): From 2005 to 2010, I was among the first group of young scientists to be awarded a five-year membership in the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen/KNAW). With this measure, the KNAW aims at providing outstanding young researchers a platform for an exchange of ideas and collaboration at the cutting edge of scientific developments. Rosalind Franklin Fellowship: In 2007, I was awarded a Rosalind Franklin Fellowship (RFF), a tenure-track research position, by the University of Groningen. The aim of the RFF program is to attract oustanding female researchers, thus increasing the representation of women among the university’s top-level scientists.

In 2010, my application for a VICI-grant on “The age effect in bilingual development: an investigation of grammatical gender in second language acquisition and first language attrition” was honoured by the Dutch National Science Foundation (NWO). The grant (NWO-grant 016.104.602) is for a five-year period and comprises the sum of € 1.5 m.

NWO/Aspasia:

Based on my successful VICI application and subsequent promotion to full professor in 2010, the Faculty of Arts received an Aspasia award (k€ 100) by NWO.

NWO/Vrije Competitie (NWO-grant PR-09-68). Also in 2010, a four-year grant on “International adoption and language development: a perspective from Kindertransport survivors” was awarded to me by NWO for the period of 2011 to 2014 (k€ 600). NWO/DFG:

In 2006, I developed an application for a large-scale investigation into the development of multilingual proficiency (total budget in excess of 1 million EUR), in collaboration with Prof. Kees de Bot (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen) and Prof. Claudia Maria Riehl (Universität zu Köln). The Dutch part of the application was awarded (NWO-grant 36070-250, 2007-2011, k€ 500), the German part was invited for resubmission by the DFG.

NWO/VENI:

From 2004 to 2008, I held an NWO-VENI grant on “Methodological issues in L1 attrition research” (NWO-grant 275-70-005), the total budged comprised k€ 120.

DfG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft): In 1999, I was awarded a Sachbeihilfe (material support) grant (DfG-grant Ste 290/12-1, co-applicant Prof. Dieter Stein) for my PhD project “Interferenzen von English als L2 auf Deutsch als L1 bei deutsch-jüdischen Emigrantinnen und Emigranten unter Berücksichtigung von Lebensweg und Verfolgungsgeschichte”. DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Auslandsdienst): In 1997, I was awarded a Ph.D.-grant for one year’s study (1997-1998) at the University of California at Berkeley (sponsored by Wallace Chafe). I turned down this grant, since Prof. Dieter Stein offered me a position as organizer of the XIIIth International Conference on Historical Linguistics, HeinrichHeine-Universität Düsseldorf, Aug. 1997 and editor of the conference volume.

In 2008, I was awarded a threeyear program (NWO-grant IG-08-01, € 25,000) for the international researcher’s network Interdisciplinary perspectives on multilingual development. The aim of this network is to strengthen links and collaboration between scientists from several European countries, with the aim of developing an application for a common PhD training scheme, with funding from either Erasmus Mundus or a Marie Curie Initial Training Network. 11 BRIEF SUMMARY OF RESEARCH OVER LAST FIVE YEARS Main focus of research: Bilingual development across the lifespan One of the most controversial issues in current research on bilingual development is whether there is an independent contribution of age of acquisition to ultimate attainment. Younger learners typically have a higher probability of becoming native-like in a second language across linguistic levels than those who are older when learning begins. Theories which assume that language learning is maturationally constrained hold that, due to neurocognitive changes which occur around puberty, the language learning ability changes around this age, and that languages learned thereafter differ in their underlying mental representation from those learned before. Approaches which do not allow for a language-specific maturational process assume that the lower levels of proficiency typically obtained by older learners are due to progressive entrenchment of the L1 in conjunction with changes in the sociolinguistic situation. My research proceeds from the assumption that the difficulty in resolving this question can, at least in part, be ascribed to the overwhelming bias on the increase of knowledge and on crosslinguistic traffic from the L1 to the L2. Developments which concern loss, deterioration or reduced accessibility of knowledge and traffic from the L2 to the L1 are much less well-studied and understood, and usually treated as a somewhat marginal issue. I argue that changes to the first language system are part and parcel of the development of bilingual knowledge and processing. As such, they can help provide additional insight into controversial issues, such as questions about the existence of maturational constraints in L2 learning, and potentially help resolve these matters: L1 attriters have acquired their first language in the same way as the monolingual populations used as a baseline for comparison in investigations of L2 speakers. Among both attriters and L2 learners, overall linguistic behaviour has been observed to differ from that of native speakers, and a higher optionality in the application of target rules has been found. However, while for L2 speakers the reasons for this variable performance (underlying representational deficit or problems in online integration of linguistic knowledge) are highly controversial, there are clear indications that no representational deficit obtains for L1 attriters. Should L1 attriters differ from monolinguals in the same way as L2 users do, that would therefore provide compelling evidence for a bilingualism effect and against theories which assume L2 acquisition to be maturationally constrained, and therefore hold L2 knowledge to be fundamentally different from L1 knowledge. Investigations of bilingualism which include both L1 attriters and L2 learners can therefore provide significant added value over the more traditional comparisons of L2ers and monolinguals alone, as they can help identify those areas where deviances are due to crosslinguistic interference and online problems, and distinguish them from areas where the L2 learners may, indeed, have a representational deficit. In this manner, L1 attrition can provide an invaluable added perspective on questions of whether bilingualism is constrained by maturational effects during the first decade of human life, and whether there is a qualitative difference between languages learned during and after this period. Current research objectives:

Applying online, neurocognitive methods (which have begun to be used in investigations of bilingualism) to the study of language attrition (VICI project) Conducting more principled comparisons between L2 learners and L1 attriters across a range of tasks and measures (VICI project, Vrije Competitie project) Investigating processing of attrited language systems (VICI project) Exploring how the overall cognitive effects of bilingualism, which are increasingly being investgated (e.g. the work by Ellen Bialystok on ageing delays among bilinguals, or the executive control advantages found for bilinguals in many studies) are modulated in the process of attrition (collaboration Internationalisering Geesteswetenschappen, European research grant application currently being developed)

Providing support for young scientists engaged in L1 attrition research. After the organisation of the first International conference on first language attrition in 2002, I set up agraduate network with some 15-20 young researchers from a variety of European countries (for a list of group members and their projects, see http://www.let.rug.nl/languageattrition/dissertations). My aim was to provide these young scientists with - a coherent and standardised set of tools for investigating language attrition (this led to the writing of a textbook, published in 2011 with Cambridge University Press, and a resource website for language attrition, www.let.rug.nl/languageattrition) - a forum where they could present and discuss their research on a regular basis, to address problems or issues that they had encountered and to gain practice and confidence at giving such presentations - a series of panels at international conferences, where the graduate students had the opportunity to present their research to an international audience - the opportunity to publish their research (I negotiated the inclusion of a section of research reports in the 2005 special volume of the International Journal of Bilingualism°on language attrition and suggested and advised some of the group members in putting together a special volume of IJB, which will appear in 2012) International networking (organizing conferences (2002, 2005), establishing a network within NWO's programme for the Internationalisation of the Humanities (2008)) Making L1 attrition studies visible in the context of research on bilingual development (organising panels/symposia at conferences such as ISB (2007 & 2009), EuroSLA (2007), AILA (2008))

A second function that I was charged with during my time on this committee was to liaise between the VU and the Hogeschool Windesheim in terms of devising instroomprogramma's for HBO graduates wishing to take a degree at the VU.
