Hooked Wire Cork Retrievers The “retrievers” on the following pages have wires with hooks. There are quite a few patents for cork retrievers. Take a look at this story in the Daily Screw: http://www.bullworks.net/daily/2007retr.htm One of the more revealing patents is William Conner’s 1908 U. S. Patent No. 893,055 for a “Cork-Extractor.” Conner details his cork extracting method using the three hooked wires on his invention. It is interesting to note his concluding remark: “While the implement is principally designed for extracting corks it is obvious that the same may be used with equally good results for cleaning the interior of bottles, jars, large chimneys [referring to oil lamps] and the like by inserting a strip of cotton, sponge or other soft material between the fingers of the spring arms.”
