Edward Thomason patented one of the most successful corkscrew designs in history. British Patent No. 2,617 was granted to him on May 7, 1802 for his " New Invented Material Article in the Making of CorkScrews". The first drawing in the patent depicted an open frame corkscrew and included the term Ne Plus Ultra which was his motto and is translated as "None Better". There are a number of variations of corkscrews derived from the patent as well as examples produced by a host of manufacturers who were licensed to make the "Thomason". The A-1 Double Lever is Neville Heeley's British Patent Number 6006 of April 23, 1888. Several examples appear on the following pages. In addition to variations in finishes, worms, and marks, there is this:

The short hinge machined in one piece is the earliest version of the Heeley and the two piece is the later production.

EC48 An unusual variant of Robert Jones & Son 1840 patent. It has the spikes but instead of a threaded construction, there is a spring inside the barrel exerting constant pulling pressure as the worm is turned into the cork. Not marked. $3900

EC49 English handle with interchangeable tools. Marked EDWARD PRESTON & SONS and trademark EP. The thumb screw on the end secures the worm on one and the chisel on the other. For both: $1200

IC51 Corkscrew and opener set in a velvet lined fitted box. The corkscrew is hallmarked for Mappin & Webb. The company was founded in 1810 in Sheffield, England and the factory was closed in 1971. $250

TT171 5.25” combination corkscrew and Codd bottle opener with spout. Marked CONEY'S PATENT on shaft/tube. This is Matt Perkins British Patent 10,794 of August 2, 1884. Perkins also patented his "An improved combined aerated water bottle opener and corkscrew" in Germany (no. 31,073) and France (No. 165,078) in 1884. Small chips in handle as seen in photographs above and below. Marks: CONEY'S PATENT. $100

RD131 A gift for high-speed passengers on British Airways Concorde. The roundlet is in a presentation box with this notice: “We would like you to accept this silver-plated corkscrew with our compliments. Elegantly designed by Links of London, this truly portable corkscrew fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. To assemble, unscrew the centre of the cartridge. Pull out spiral, flip down and screw back arm to form a handle. We hope this will be pleasant and useful reminder of your flight on board Concorde, the flagship of British Airways Fleet – and the ultimate in air travel.” Stamped “Concorde.” $195
