1. About Affinity Sutton With over 58,000 homes and a 100-year history, Affinity Sutton is a business for social purpose and one of the largest housing associations in England. Today over 161,000 people call an Affinity Sutton home ‘their home’. They aim to provide great customer service to residents, as well as support for those in need. They manage and maintain homes to a good standard by investing and improving them and are committed to helping tackle the shortage of affordable homes through their new build programme.

2. About Groundwork Groundwork is the environmental charity with a green heart. We have worked for over 35 years to provide training and create jobs, reduce energy use and waste, re-connect people with nature and transform whole neighbourhoods. Step by step we’ll go on changing places and changing lives until everywhere is green and vibrant, every community is strong enough to shape its own destiny and everyone can reach their potential. We operate as a Federation of Trusts who work locally across the UK. All our work is underpinned by our values. We are environmentally aware and focused on communities in need. We are collaborative, show integrity, and strive for quality in everything we do. Our decisions, actions and operations are underpinned by a sustainable development policy which sets out how we contribute to creating a strong and just society living within environmental limits.

3. Programme Summary Affinity Sutton has operated a Community Grants Programme since 2010 and in late 2014 Groundwork was appointed to manage the programme. The programme provides grants of between £1,000 and £5,000 to charities, community organisations and voluntary groups for projects which primarily benefit Affinity Sutton residents. It operates across 5 areas of England:     

London South West East South North

All projects funded through the programme must also contribute towards at least one of the following outcomes:   

The project engages Affinity Sutton residents in positive activities; or The project offers support services to Affinity Sutton residents; or The project improves the environment and community space for Affinity Sutton residents

Groundwork UK’s role is to offer advice to potential applicants, manage submitted applications and assess and monitor projects each step of the way from when an applicant submits their application to project completion. Affinity Sutton ‘Resident Panels’, made up of local residents, make the final decision on which projects receive funding through a process that is supported by the Neighbourhood Investment Team at Affinity Sutton. Groundwork UK also has a team of enablers, who are local experts in community development. The enablers work with groups who have been successful in receiving a grant to help them to deliver their projects, build local relationships and also identify other sources of funding or ways of working to help their projects become more sustainable. The Resident Panels can also request that an enabler work with a group where they think the project idea is great and needed locally, but they have not awarded a Affinity Sutton Community Grants Programme Annual Report – July 2016

grant because they feel the project needs further development. The enabler then helps the group look at their project idea and make suggestions on how they can make a stronger application to the programme.

The Headlines

5. Case study 1 - Hyde Park Source Luke Tilley from Leeds was delighted when he received over £1,000 to help build communal gardens for families living on the Killingbeck Estate. Luke is a member of Hyde Park Source, an organisation that works with children and their parents in and around Leeds to improve outdoor community spaces. After hearing about the funding, Luke worked together with the Killingbeck Residents’ Association to decide what would be most beneficial to their community. They soon decided on communal gardens, knowing they would be something that all residents could get involved with. The Killingbeck Estate is in a deprived area and before the funding was granted, there were very few safe places for recreation and anti-social behaviour was a problem in the neglected gardens. The lack of safe outdoor space meant that there were few opportunities to meet other families living on the estate. Working with Luke, the residents have used the funding to design and create new communal gardens throughout the estate, including a community orchard on a disused allotment site. The funding went towards tools and training for the residents to continue looking after the gardens and has provided a space where children can work with their parents and grandparents to learn how to use the gardening tools. The outdoor space continues to be well used by the residents and is a focal point for the local community, particularly families that live on the estate. The improvements to the outdoor space are significant and positively appreciated by the residents Residents have also been given the opportunity to learn new techniques such as creating pathways using wood chippings from overgrown plants that were then showcased at a Affinity Sutton Community Grants Programme Annual Report – July 2016

community event organised by the local children. Healthy eating has also been a key focus and residents have been given the opportunity to grow organic food in the community orchard and learn how to cook healthy meals and make smoothies and jams. The project has been a big success for local residents who have noticed a significant change to the area since the gardens were built. The outdoor space continues to be well used by the residents and is a focal point for the local community, particularly families that live on the estate. Local resident and mother of two, Amanda said, “Since the communal gardens have been built, my children and I come to most of the sessions and take part in the activities. Not only do my kids now want to be outside playing with the other kids, but it’s also allowed me to get to know my neighbours better.” Speaking about the project, Luke said, “We wanted to design a beautiful, productive and low maintenance garden that would help bring the community together and involve local volunteers. Since the project launched we have been able to provide free children’s activities, free childcare and a space for non-working parents to do activities with other adults and their children. We were really pleased when the Affinity Sutton CEO and Head of Investment came to see our gardens and see how the money has been spent as it was great for residents to meet them and show them the hard work we have been doing.” Going forward, the group are continuing to improve and maintain the communal gardens and have formed a community orchard group to ensure the good work keeps going.

“The project is right at the heart of the estate. It has not only inspired a sense of community and pride but has also resulted in smiles all round!” Luke concluded.

6. Case study 2 - Lewisham Arthouse Lewisham Arthouse received a grant of £2,500 to deliver a project called Making Works to hold weekly hands-on practical arts workshops for children and young people. The workshops took place over summer 2015 on an area of unused greenspace on the Leybridge Estate in Lewisham and over 50 children attended the sessions. The group ran similar workshops the previous year and received a positive response from the children who came along and their parents, so decided to run these again on a larger scale to involve more participants. The innovative workshops used reclaimed materials and reused these each week, delivering an important message to the community about sustainability. Children worked individually on drawings and the design of their structures, as well as in teams, constructing and decorating different wooden structures every week. They helped to disassemble the structures at the end of each session as well as tidy up the materials, learning important life skills along the way. The sessions were designed to develop children's confidence in using power tools, problem-solving skills and creative thinking, as well as their ability to work in teams in a fun and engaging way.

The group told us, “The project exceeded our expectations. It dealt effectively with issues of inclusion and diversity. It also successfully built confidence and improved skills, especially in the shyer participants. We found that the children gained more confidence and were able to embark on more ambitious projects compared to the previous year. Affinity Sutton Community Grants Programme Annual Report – July 2016

Page 6

GROUNDWORK CHANGING PLACES CHANGING LIVES

“There was a real sense of community in our session with neighbours joining every week. We are now known and trusted in the grounds of Leybridge Estate and we brought joy on Wednesday afternoons.” One of the outcomes of the project was that it helped the residents value the green space available to them. It provided space for them to interact with other families and children on the Estate. This project has enabled the community to cohesively support each other in the long term as a result of the funding received. Residents who were not involved could see the growing art pieces from their houses and came out to find out what was happening. The activities helped to improve neighbourhood and community links. “One 7 year old came to all of the sessions, and brought friends with her, she was really shy last year but this year she was confident and happy to build and help to tidy at the end,” one volunteer commented. “She was a real asset to us and showed other children how to build things and use the tools and undertook any task given to her.” The project created a real interest in the local community to reclaim the generally unused space for community use and the group are continuing to work with the community to develop further activities on the site.

They are also looking at how they can replicate the Making Works project in other areas identified as socially deprived.

7. Case study 3 - Mancunian Way Nick Buckley from Manchester was thrilled when he received £3000 to continue the award-winning Gorton Young Ambassadors Programme to engage with more young people in the local area. Nick is the founder of ‘Mancunian Way’ which is a charity that works with young people in Greater Manchester to reduce anti-social behaviour. After hearing about the funding, Nick worked together with the current group of young ambassadors to decide what would benefit their community the most. They soon decided to build on the existing work they do in the area and offer more activities for young people to get involved in. They came up with ideas for activities to help build their confidence and self-esteem, while also preparing them to make informed choices about jobs and careers. They were also keen to recruit a new cohort of young ambassadors to reach out to more young people. Before the funding was granted there were very few activities for young people in the area due to the recent closure of a youth club. In order to prevent anti-social behaviour becoming a problem, Nick knew that there was a real need for this programme. Working in partnership with Cedar Mount Academy, the group secured new facilities at the school for young people to use. They also enlisted the support of high-profile organisations such as Hilton, Virgin Trains and Key 103 Radio to provide new skills, career advice and practical work experience. Another key focus of the project has been to help other people in the community. The young ambassadors created a film to educate other young people that actions have consequences. They also organised a Christmas collection to help homeless people in Manchester city centre. The project has been a resounding success reaching out to 50 young people. Over the past year ten new Ambassadors have been recruited to the programme, and one of the older Ambassadors has now secured his first full-time job, with thirteen young people also securing qualifications.

Page 8

Speaking about the project, Nick said “We felt it was important to continue the Gorton Young Ambassadors Programme to work with more young people in the area. The partnership with Cedar Mount Academy has allowed us to engage with young people on a daily basis. “We hope to continue this project into its fourth year as many young people in the area still face barriers to achievement and have low aspirations. Our work supports them to have dreams for the future and understand how to achieve these dreams.”

8. Case Study 4 – Handcross Rosemary Club Helen Arnold from Handcross in West Sussex was awarded a grant of £1,000 to run a programme of events and outings for elderly and less mobile residents in the village where she lived. Helen is the chairman of Handcross Rosemary Club who support their members to meet up and visit locations that are not easily accessible. After hearing about the funding, Helen worked together with the members to decide on a programme of events that would be most beneficial to the community. They soon decided to offer monthly entertainment at their parish hall as well as provide a coach for outings to local places. Before the funding was granted, there were very few opportunities for elderly and less mobile residents to get together. Most members of the club live alone and cannot drive which means getting out and meeting other people can be difficult.

Affinity Sutton Community Grants Programme Annual Report – July 2016

Page 9

GROUNDWORK CHANGING PLACES CHANGING LIVES

The club has used the funding to provide a varied programme of monthly entertainment and speakers. They have also organised several outings throughout the year whereby residents are collected by coach to visit places in the local area, such as Heaven Farm and Highley Manor. One resident spent her childhood near Heaven Farm but had been unable to visit for many years and said the following about the project, “I loved seeing Heaven Farm and the countryside around there – I haven’t been back in nearly 60 years. It was such a happy time for me!” Speaking about the project, Helen said, “It has been really successful in supporting elderly members of the community to get out and meet other people. Many of our members live alone and they will often eat their meals alone. We always provide them with a full homemade tea that they can enjoy in the company of the others. “What is so rewarding is seeing their great enjoyment and getting them to places they would not have dreamed of seeing. Reaching out to older people and those living alone is such an important lifeline for them.

As well as the enjoyment of the residents, their wellbeing is also very important to Helen: “Seeing the members of a regular basis allows us to ensure they are receiving the support they need. I was able to seek help for a vulnerable member of the community when they needed it.” The club has gained new members over the year and Helen is already deciding on a programme of events for next year.

9. Case Study 6 - Sk8side James Issott, the Bid Writer for Sk8side, received a grant of £5,000 to engage young people in positive activities. Some of these included the provision of counsellors to help young people with mental health issues and a youth employment support worker to help them back into work. Sk8side is an organisation that runs a free youth centre to help support Young People in the Ashford area. The key aims of the organisation are to offer activities, information, advice and support on all young peoples’ issues, ranging from sexual health and drug awareness through to housing and employment. The area of Ashford where Sk8side is based is very deprived, with high levels of youth unemployment, mental health problems and housing issues. Many young people have used Sk8side to try and make positive changes in their lives as well as for help through crisis. The grant would enable the organisation to continue to provide these services to young people in need. James applied for a grant to help cover staffing and volunteer costs of the people who work at Sk8side and provide services for the young people. Part of the grant was also for the purchase of equipment that could be used for games, media and stationary to help keep the young people entertained. The grant has also helped to run the ESP initiative (Extra Support Programme) which has enabled Sk8side to target 10 young people and provide them with 121 support and mentoring. Members of the ESP have further needs around anti-social behaviour and criminal activity as well as housing and substance misuse, and most have shown signs of progression. Anti-social behaviour has also decreased in the local skate park and more young members have taken up skateboarding due to the teaching at Sk8side.

Affinity Sutton Community Grants Programme Annual Report – July 2016

Page 11

GROUNDWORK CHANGING PLACES CHANGING LIVES

Sk8side worked closely with a number of individuals and offered services to many young people including offering information and advice on sexual health, drug awareness, careers advice and more. There was also a targeted programme on the topic of mental health and self-harm that was targeted at 22 young people. The centre also ran a summer activities program that engaged 80 young people in positive activities during the school holidays. Sk8side have also worked with the local council to promote creative arts and skateboarding young people. The youth centre also worked with a local artist to paint skate ramps and signs around the skate park. Over 50 young people were then involved with the annual skate park competition. Sk8side hopes to continue to run its activities and services until at least September 2016. The group will be looking for further funding during this time to help develop the organisation.

10.

Enabler Support

Enabler support was offered to all projects on the basis of recommendations made by Groundwork UK or the resident panels. 22 projects received Enabler support to varying degrees ranging from remote telephone discussions regarding the approved project and recommendations suggested at the Resident Panel meeting, or face to face meetings to offer specific support. 109 hours of Enabler support has been delivered ranging from support with funding bids, further engagement with residents with the local community, to support the organisations to become more sustainable and further support Affinity Sutton residents. Hyde Park Source, Zest, Mottingham Residents for change and Lewisham Arthouse projects all received Enabler support, specifically relating to funding bids.
