MISSION The mission of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Kansas City is to promote the practice of tzedakah (righteousness, charity) and the pursuit of tikkun olam (repairing the world) by serving as the central resource and advocate for planned giving and endowments in the Kansas City Jewish community. We accomplish this by: Building financial resources to promote sustainable Jewish communal organizations and programs; Engaging, educating and inspiring multiple generations of givers throughout the Jewish community; and Providing creative philanthropic planning expertise to individuals and families to assist them in achieving their charitable goals.

VISION The vision of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Kansas City is to foster, sustain and ensure a strong and vibrant Jewish community for today and for generations to come.

COLLABORATION/FOUNDATION While “collaboration” has stood at the heart of the Jewish Community Foundation’s work for longer than 50 years, the term was a true byword for our activities during the past year. Our affiliation with the Jewish Heritage Foundation marks what is by many measures one of the largest and most important partnerships ever in Kansas City Jewish philanthropy. Structured as a supporting foundation within the JCF, the Heritage Foundation’s reorganization is emblematic of our mission – helping Kansas City Jewish community donors, agencies and synagogues make the most of their proud and sacred charitable objectives. Important as this $35 million partnership is for the JCF and the Jewish community, the Heritage affiliation hardly represents our only collaborative accomplishment in 2012. In the pages that follow you will get a taste of the Foundation’s many achievements last year, including partnership in a strengthened Jewish Funders Council, a collaboration with the Gerson family private foundation to honor the memory of family patriarch Peter Gerson, J-Lead support for the community Mitzvah Garden, regional recognition for the success of the Bushman Community Endowment program, and a matching initiative that resulted in the most rapid growth in the number of new donor advised funds in the Foundation’s history. Looking ahead, we are committed to building on what was achieved in 2012 with an eye toward weaving the JCF even more deeply into the charitable work in our community while identifying ways to create a stronger and more vibrant Kansas City Jewish community. We are grateful for the hard work of our staff, officers and trustees and are profoundly appreciative of the trust placed in the Foundation by the Kansas City Jewish community.

Jewish Heritage Foundation Joins JCF In September 2012, the Jewish Heritage Foundation became a supporting organization of the Jewish Community Foundation. “Partnering with the Jewish Community Foundation gives us the opportunity to significantly increase our support of the community and further our mission,” said former Jewish Heritage Foundation President Merilyn Berenbom. “The affiliation helps maximize our potential, which will result in valuable positive dividends in our community.” JCF Immediate Past President Ron Goldsmith added that,“The partnership between the Jewish Community Foundation and Jewish Heritage Foundation enhances the core competencies of both organizations and promotes a creative collaborative environment that will enhance grant-making in the Kansas City Jewish community. Donor Advised Fund Match Since the Foundation opened its first Donor Advised Fund in the 1980s, hundreds have been established by donors of varying ages, financial means and with widely diverse giving interests. In an effort to make Donor Advised Funds even more accessible, in March of 2012 JCF lowered the minimum for establishing a fund from $10,000 to $5,000 ($2,500 for those 35 years old and younger). As a further incentive, the Foundation allocated $25,000 to match one grant to the new fundholders’s favorite Jewish charity for all new Donor Advised Funds opened. The new Donor Advised Fund promotion was a great success. Thirty four new Donor Advised Funds were opened in 2012. As a result of the match, a collaboration between JCF and our donors, an additional $48,000 has been granted to the Jewish community. “The JCF Donor Advised Fund is a win/win for all participants and recipients,” said Saul Gitomer, a new fundholder. “The matching grant was a definite bonus to persuade me to open a Donor Advised Fund. Where else in today’s financial markets can one benefit from an immediate 10% return on their investment! Furthermore, this return passes directly on to benefit worthwhile charitable causes of my choosing!” Because of the success of the program, the Foundation has extended the Donor Advised Fund match for 2013.

JCF Partners with Private Foundation to Create Scholarship Fund Gerson Scholarship

“Our family created the Peter Gerson Educational Scholarship Fund to provide higher educational scholarships to Gerson Company employees and their families. The idea of offering scholarships to employees provided a meaningful way to honor my Dad’s memory for several reasons. My Dad believed and was living proof that, through hard work and education, one can better one’s life. He also was deeply committed to and felt responsible for the welfare of his employees. “Although our family has its own private foundation, the Jewish Community Foundation offered the perfect vehicle to easily create, execute and administer all aspects of the scholarship fund.With our input, the Foundation established the fund parameters and guidelines; received and acknowledged donations; and importantly, enabled scholarships to be awarded soley on merit as the Foundation created an independent committee to read the grant applications and award the scholarships. My Dad would have been so pleased to know that the first round of scholarships were granted this spring. Working Together to Strengthen Our Community In 2012, the Jewish Community Foundation partnered with the Jewish Heritage Foundation, the Jewish Federation and the Menorah Legacy Foundation to create the Funders Council Fund. Each funder contributed $25,000; JCF’s contribution was made possible by a grant from the Community Legacy Fund. Combined, the funders hoped this resource would provide seed money for innovative, collaborative programs to help create a community committed to Jewish learning and living. Three programs received funding. They were: The Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy to conduct a feasibility study for a collaborative program in which the school could help the congregations by teaching Hebrew language skills and literacy for Bar and Bat Mitzvah preparation. The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah for its Machane Jehudah project, a 2 week summer camp that serves as an alternative to traditional Sunday school. Camp is open to members of all synagogues. The Jewish Student Union for its Scholars Class, a 12 week series for high school juniors and seniors to learn about Jewish values as they relate to the personal challenges which teens encounter.

What is B’nai Tzedek? The B’nai Tzedek program encourages Bar and Bat Mitzvah students to become involved in tzedakah by establishing a fund for Jewish charitable giving. Opening a B’nai Tzedek fund gives teens a chance to play a part in improving their community and the world. To establish a B’nai Tzedek fund, teens donate $125 and the Jewish Community Foundation adds $375, resulting in a fund with a $500 balance. Once a year, fundholders can grant 10% of their fund to any Jewish charity in Kansas City or in Israel. At the annual B’nai Tzedek Shuk, teens meet representatives from community organizations and learn about how their charitable contribution can make a difference. In 2012, B’nai Tzedek fundholders granted a total of $19,513. More than $136,000 has been granted since the program’s inception in 2001.

J-LEAD Volunteers at the Mitzvah Garden In September, J-LEAD members and their families gathered at the Mitzvah Garden at The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah to help harvest fall vegetables and work to improve the garden’s soil quality. “We are amazed by all the wonderful work being done in the Mitzvah Garden,” said Angie Smith. “As a J-LEAD member, I am thrilled to contribute.” The Mitzvah Garden is a community garden project that donates nearly 3,000 lbs. of produce yearly to various community food pantries. The Mitzvah Garden was one of seven recipents of J-LEAD funding in 2012. J-LEAD (Jewish Leadership Education Action and Development) brings together donors in their 20s, 30s and 40s to learn about community needs and to pool resources to support Jewish programming. Members join J-LEAD by contributing $500 annually to the common granting pool. J-LEAD members granted a total of $28,500 in 2012.

JCF Wins Excellence in Fundraising Award The Jewish Community Foundation was honored to receive the Association of Fundraising Professionals Mid-America Chapter 2012 Excellence in Fundraising Award. The presentation on November 1 at the World War I Museum was part of the National Philanthropy Day celebration. The award honors nonprofit organizations that have increased fundraising results with creative initiatives. JCF was recognized in particular for its leadership in the area of planned giving and the impact it has had on area nonprofits through the Bushman Community Endowment program (BCE). Since 2007, BCE has provided comprehensive educational seminars, one-on-one consulting, marketing materials and up to $56,000 in incentive grants to each of thirteen Jewish agencies and synagogues. As a result, the Kansas City Jewish community has new commitments of an estimated $35 million in future permanent endowment gifts. Thank you for helping make this program such a success and ensuring the continued vibrancy of our community.

In loving memory of Gail Littman z”l Gail Littman, Vice President and Director of Endowments of the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego, was not only a friend and colleague but a mentor to our Foundation. It was under her tutelage that the Bushman Community Endowment program was developed and implemented, inspiring more than 350 members of our Jewish community to Create a Jewish Legacy in excess of $35 million.
