To Fair!eld Union Students, Parents and Community: I would like to take this opportunity to express what a privilege it is to be the next Superintendent of the Fairfield Union Local School District. It will be my honor and responsibility to carry on the outstanding tradition of excellence within the Fairfield Union community. Together, I know we will be able to achieve the vision we all have for our schools and students. My family has been overwhelmed by the generosity and kindness of everyone at Fairfield Union. My wonderful wife, Natalie, and I have been blessed with two amazing daughters, and we are excited for this new chapter in our lives. Sydney (7th grade) and Morgan (2nd grade) will proudly be students at Fairfield Union this coming school year. As a family, we are extremely proud to call Fairfield Union home. As a first generation college graduate, I know the value of hard work and an education. My parents and family made grand sacrifices for me to realize my dreams, and I view it as my obligation to pay it forward to my kids and students. Success is ultimately reliant on hard work, dedication, and a desire to be your best. The faculty and staff at Fairfield Union will work diligently to help continue to instill these values in all of our students. As the next Superintendent of Fairfield Union, I vow to work with the same passion and dedication for every child in this school district as I do for my own daughters. Serving the children of this school district is not just a job—it is a way of life for every staff member in this school district. We welcome this responsibility, and we will not fail in providing the best possible education for our children. The excitement and energy surrounding our tremendous school district is palpable every day. There is work to be done, and I am eager to continue building upon the foundation established before me. I will leave you with a final thought which will be our creed as long as I am Superintendent at Fairfield Union: “Every day, in every way, excellence is a way of life!” Go Falcons!

SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS

Fair!eld Union Land Lab Revitalization

All Day Every Day Kindergarten

During the 2014-15 school year, Fairfield Union, in partnership with the Fairfield County ESC, was awarded a Straight A Fund Grant to improve and expand our outdoor learning environments. A team of teachers are working with professionals in the area of outdoor education to revitalize the areas we already have and to build additional areas for educational purposes. Coupled with that grant opportunity, several local individuals and organizations partnered with the district to work on various projects around the high school and middle school site. These individuals and partners have made significant contributions and volunteered their time and expertise to restore and improve our site for future Falcons. The following projects have been completed: • Restoration of our historic covered bridge • Dredging of existing pond and repair to the earthen dam • Construction of a new perimeter running and nature trail • Eradication of invasive species around the pond and bridge area The following are current projects: • Construction of a shelter house to be used as an outdoor learning classroom • Construction of a dock to allow for greater pond access • Continued maintenance of trails, ponds and covered bridge, . as well as the surrounding area. In addition to the projects listed above, there are several smaller scale projects planned, including installation of birdhouses throughout the site, trail cameras, and various other methods to increase outdoor learning. Our goal is to revitalize and restore the outdoor learning environments we currently have and develop additional site enhancements to encourage outdoor learning opportunities for our next generation of Fairfield Union learners. To accomplish this, we need the community’s assistance. Our goal is to raise $30,000 to fund the construction of our new shelter house and various other projects around the Land Lab. If you are interested in being part of this project or would like to make a donation, additional information is available on our school website under the “Outdoor Learning Environments” link or you can contact Liz Henwood at 740-536-7249 or [email protected].

Fairfield Union is pleased to announce that kindergarten students will attend all day every day beginning in the 2016-17 school year. Registration and screening was conducted in the spring. Please contact Bremen or Pleasantville Elementary School if your child is not yet registered and has not completed the screening process. Kindergarten State Testing (KRA) will take place on August 11, 12 and 15, 2016 by appointment. Information has been mailed to parents. Staggered start dates will help kindergarten students adjust to attending school for the first time. Half of the students in each class will attend on either August 16 or 17 with all students attending every day beginning August 18. The staggered start schedule has been mailed to parents. Please feel free to contact your child’s school if you have any questions regarding kindergarten. New High School Logo Fairfield Union High School has a new official Falcon. Tradition and history have always been an important part of Fairfield Union culture, yet there has never been a single recognizable mascot for the high school. For years, every sports team, organization, or student group has simply picked from a catalog when designing uniforms or clothing for fundraising and affiliation recognition. When Principal Brian Verde came to Fairfield Union High School, one of his goals was to develop the brand—the identifiable mark of Fairfield Union High School. He and Athletic Director Matt McPhail have spent the last year working with students, staff and outside agencies to develop a logo. Alumni, parents, students and staff have been afforded opportunities to provide feedback throughout the process. Finally, the design submitted by WB Graphics and Ts was selected. The new logo was officially approved at the June 13 Board of Education meeting. This new logo and its approved variations will be the only acceptable logo for Fairfield Union High School. Watch the high school website for the communication document containing the logo and its acceptable variations.

Land Lab Community Day Fairfield Union will be hosting the Second Annual Land Lab Community Day on Saturday, October 1, 2016. Watch for further details on our website. Activities scheduled for the day include information booths with curriculum instructors and members of other organization groups, maple tapping of the trees, guided walking tours, a history of the covered bridge, and a ceremony to honor new land lab members.

Bremen Street Projects The traffic patterns for Bremen Elementary School for the 2015-16 school year were mostly successful and met the needs of local businesses, residents and the school. Those traffic patterns will continue in the 2016-17 school year. Information may be found on the school website or from the Bremen Elementary school office.

FAIRFIELD UNION WEBSITE The Fairfield Union web address is www.fairfieldunion.org. Please visit this site for school news and regular updates.

The village is currently moving into the Safe Routes to School Grant phase of the streets project which includes adding some safety features for students. These features include additional sidewalks, crosswalks and signs. 2

ST Math

RENEWAL of Permanent Improvement Levy

Bremen and Pleasantville students will be welcoming a new friend when they return to school this year—JiJi! Who is JiJi? JiJi is the beloved penguin in the ST Math software games. Children help JiJi get past obstacles by solving math puzzles— and they associate JiJi with challenge, learning and the thrill of success. Every time a child demonstrates understanding of a math concept, JiJi crosses the screen, signaling success and leading the student to the next more challenging puzzle.

On the November 8, 2016, General Election, Fairfield Union Local School District will place an important issue on the ballot—the renewal of the Three (3.0) mill permanent improvement levy. This is a renewal and will not increase your property taxes. The levy is for a 5-year term and it will generate approximately $289,500 annually. This equals $29.66 a year for $100,000 in valuation.

Based on the success of the pilot conducted in Bremen and Pleasantville Elementary buildings during April and May 2016, Fairfield Union was able to purchase ST Math for both elementary schools through a combination of district and grant funding. All students in grades K-4 will have access to this powerful new learning tool for mathematics created by MIND Research Institute. ST Math is a game-based software system designed to boost math comprehension and proficiency through visual learning and problem solving. The software incorporates the latest research in neuroscience, motivation, learning and game theory. It is fully aligned to the district’s mathematics curriculum and students will be able to access the program from school and home.

Fairfield Union residents have supported this permanent improvement since 1991, and it is our hope you will continue to support this worthy component of the district’s plan. Permanent improvement dollars can only be used on projects or equipment that have an expected life of five years or more. Funds of this type are used for, but not limited to, school bus replacement, grounds-keeping equipment, asphalt repairs and sealing, roof repairs/replacement, furniture, technology, boilers, and other general building maintenance/upgrades. More detailed information will be provided prior to the General Election.

Disclosures and Noti!cations

Non-Discrimination/Title IX

Identi!cation of Gifted Students

The Fairfield Union School District has a policy of non-discrimination in admission services or employment with any program or activity sponsored by the school district. Inquiries or complaints should be directed to Chad Belville, who serves as the district’s Title IX Coordinator.

All school districts are required to identify children who are gifted. Gifted students perform at remarkably high levels when compared to other students of their own age. The district accepts referrals, screens and identifies, or screens and reassesses students who perform or show potential for performing at high levels of accomplishment in the areas of superior cognitive ability, specific academic ability, creative thinking ability, and/or visual and/or performing arts. The district must follow policy and procedures established in Ohio Administrative Code 3301-51-15. These rules specify that assessment instruments must come from the list approved by the Ohio Department of Education. If you believe your child to be gifted in one or more of the areas listed above, please contact your child’s principal. Forms should be filed by October 7, 2016. Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) The IDEA requires school districts to locate, identify and evaluate all resident children and adults from age 3 through 21 who are suspected of needing special education services. This notice is a required step in this search, and the district is committed to fulfilling the intent of the IDEA. Therefore, any child who is suspected of having a disability and who is not currently identified should be referred to the Principal of the building of attendance. Also, Chad Belville, Superintendent, may be contacted at 740-536-7384.

The McKinney-Vento Act The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act was designed to address the problems that homeless children and youth face in enrolling and attending school. Under this Federal law, school districts are required to designate a district liaison to help remove barriers that homeless children frequently face. If you are aware of any families in our school district who are facing this difficult problem and who have children who are not enrolled in school, please contact Chad Belville at 740-536-7384.

Student Records and the Public’s Right to Know The Fairfield Union Board of Education supports the right of the people to know about programs and services of their schools and makes efforts to disseminate appropriate information. Records pertaining to individual students and other confidential materials are not released for inspection. Student records that consist of “personally identifiable information” generally are exempt from disclosure except in certain limited cases required by law. Only that information deemed “directory information” may be released from an individual student’s file. Student Directory Information includes student’s name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, participation in school activities, achievements, awards, honors, weight and height if a member of an athletic team, major field of study, and dates of attendance and graduation. This information will be disclosed without prior written consent. If the parents, legal guardian, or adult student prefers that such information not be released, they must notify the Principal in writing. Educational records are maintained in the administrative offices of the building a child attends. Records of students no longer attending a Fairfield Union School will be located in the building the student last attended. Parents or an eligible student may review the student’s educational records. 3
