From the Campus Principal

Mr Phil Lewis

Reconciliation Week Last week was a great celebration of the culture of our Indigenous People of Australia. As a Catholic Community our mission is to bring hope and God’s love to all people and as such we celebrate with our Indigenous People and support them in their journey for reconciliation and recognition in our Australian Constitution. In bringing hope to our Indigenous People it is important that we authentically understand their culture and perspective of Australian history. What is a Welcome to Country? Protocols for welcoming visitors to Country have been a part of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures for thousands of years. Despite the absence of fences or visible borders, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups had clear boundaries separating their Country from that of other groups. Crossing into another group’s Country required a request for permission to enter. When permission was granted the hosting group would welcome the visitors, offering them safe passage and protection of their spiritual being during the journey. While visitors were provided with a safe passage, they also had to respect the protocols and rules of the land owner group while on their Country. Why are Welcomes to Country and Acknowledgements of Country important? Incorporating welcoming and acknowledgement protocols into official meetings and events recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and Traditional Custodians of land. It promotes an ongoing connection to place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and shows respect for traditional owners. In Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, the meaning of Country is more than just ownership or connection to land, as Professor Mick Dodson explains: “When we talk about traditional ‘Country’…we mean something beyond the dictionary definition of the word. For Aboriginal Australians…we might mean homeland, or tribal or clan area and we might mean more than just a place on the map. For us, Country is a word for all the values, places, resources, stories and cultural obligations associated with that area and its features. It describes the entirety of our ancestral domains. While they may all no longer necessarily be the title-holders to land, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians are still connected to the Country of their ancestors and most consider themselves the custodians or caretakers of their land.” National Reconciliation Week is celebrated every year between 27 May and 3 June. These two dates commemorate two very significant events in Australia’s history: the 1967 Referendum, which gave the Commonwealth the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in the national census; and the Mabo Decision, which legally recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land, paved the way for Native Title, and overturned Terra Nullius. What is the theme? The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2016 was Our History, Our Story, Our Future. Our History, Our Story, Our Future is derived from the State of Reconciliation in Australia report, which asks all Australians to reflect on our national identity, and the place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and rights in our nation’s story. ‘Our History’ reminds us all that historical acceptance is essential to our reconciliation journey. Historical acceptance will exist when all Australians understand and accept the fact that past laws, practices and policies deeply affected the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, often having devastating immediate impacts and causing much of the disadvantage that exists today. It is also a commitment to ensuring these wrongs are never repeated in the future. PO Box 28, Findon South Australia 5023 [email protected]

‘Our Story’ reflects the fact that the journey towards reconciliation forms a significant part of Australia’s story, as do the stories of both trauma and triumph told by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It also encourages each and every one of us to make reconciliation part of our own story. ‘Our Future’ reinforces that reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, in the knowledge that we believe in fairness for everyone, that our diversity makes us richer, and that together, we are stronger.

National Reconciliation Prayer Creator Spirit, All creation once declared your glory, Your laws were honoured and trusted, Forgive us our neglect as our country approaches the most critical moment in its history. Listen to our prayer as we turn to you, Hear the cry of our land and its people, Just as you heard the cry of Jesus, your Son, on the Cross. Help us to replace our national shame With true national pride by restoring the dignity of our First People whose antiquity is unsurpassed. May our faith and trust in you increase. Only then will our nation grow strong and be a worthy place for all who wish to make their home in our land.

Catholic Culture Commissioning Mass of Timor Leste 2016 NOW Participants On Sunday 5 June, a special Mass was celebrated for those from our community heading off to Timor Leste in a few weeks. Family and friends gathered to celebrate the Mass which involved the commissioning of those who will embark on this important outreach work. God of the journey We ask you to bless these members of our community as they travel to Timor Leste. May your light burn constantly within them as they share your words of love and forgiveness through action and service. May the Holy Spirit go with them as they leave this place and bring them back to us safely. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Primary News Year 7 Debating Teams One of several year 7 debating teams competed against Westminster last Thursday evening. The students participating were: Athira Jiji, Georgia Ritter, Charlotte Brown and Lucy Langdon. They were very proud to represent Nazareth and be provided with the opportunity to network with students from other schools. Developing personal confidence and learning how to express logical viewpoints are life skills which each of the above named students are skilfully acquiring. We would also like to acknowledge Ms McInnis for her passion and enthusiasm in coaching the teams. Year 2 Incursion Year 2 students have been exploring China. Students enjoyed dressing in Chinese outfits and rotated through a variety of cultural activities. It was excellent to see so many parent helpers; we thank each of you for your ongoing support.

Secondary News Semester Examinations Year 10 and 11 students will be undertaking examinations in a number of subjects in the coming weeks. Specific timetables for the examinations have been distributed to students and parents this week, which indicate the date, time and location of each examination. • For year 10 students, examinations will occur during week 8, Tuesday 21 to Friday 24 June • For year 11 students, examinations will occur during week 7, Tuesday 14 to Friday 17 June Examination Strategies Examinations at year 10 and 11 have been designed to prepare students for the external examination that they will undertake in the corresponding subject at SACE Stage 2 level. Opportunities to practise the skills of revision and preparation for this type of assessment, as well as techniques to be used during the examination, are valuable for students to optimise success in their final year of their secondary schooling and possible tertiary education pathway. Tips for examination revision and undertaking the examination itself were featured in last week’s newsletter and subject teachers will devote time in class leading up to the examination to assisting students with their revision and preparation for this type of assessment. Habits of Excellence – 5 Star Rating Nazareth community members would be well aware of the expectations we have for our student achievement and the ‘habits’ that are identified as practices students can use to assist them to achieve their potential. In order for students and families to gauge their overall performance, students in years 8-12 who consistently achieve the ‘5 Habits of Excellence’ throughout any one semester will be recognised in their semester report . Outlined below is the criteria that is used to determine whether or not a student has successfully demonstrated the ‘5 Habits of Excellence’.

Attendance:

Students must attend the College every day unless there is a very good reason. Whatever this reason, verification is required from parents. Criteria: Students need to have all absences ‘explained’ and no more than 10 days absent per year in order to be eligible to achieve a Nazareth 5 Habits Award.

Punctuality:

Students must be punctual to the College and lessons every day. Criteria: Students must not have been issued with a late arrival detention in order to be eligible to achieve a Nazareth 5 Habits Award.

Application:

Good application includes such things as being prepared for lessons, contributing to ideas and starting work quickly. Criteria: Students must demonstrate at least ‘Good’ application across all subject areas on order to be eligible to achieve the Nazareth 5 Habits Award.

Work Completion:

The completion of all tasks is crucial in order for students to attain success across subject areas. Criteria: Students must ensure all work is completed to a satisfactory standard. Students who require the support of the ‘Work Completion’ process will not be considered eligible to receive the Nazareth 5 Habits Award.

Community Involvement:

Students must demonstrate involvement in the wider community/co-curricular programme in order to be eligible for the Nazareth 5 Habits Award. Criteria: Involvement in one or more co-curricular/wider College event as listed on end of semester reports.

Students who demonstrate all five habits across the semester will receive a ‘Nazareth 5 Habits Award’ on their semester report. We hope that all students in the community will successfully demonstrate the ‘5 Habits of Excellence’ and in doing so will give themselves every opportunity to reach their potential and achieve individual excellence. Queries regarding this initiative can be directed to House Coordinators or Ms Cath McCole (Assistant Principal – Student Development).

Exciting opportunity for your family! Japanese students from Kogakuin Junior High gh School are visiting Nazareth eth th again aga from 12th – 29th August, 2016! We are now w seeking families who are willing to home-stay a student for this short period. For two weeks in 2015, my family and I were privileged enough to welcome come year 9 student Yui Kanazawa into our family. Throughout the duration of his stay, Yui brought much warmth into our home as he shared his culture with us, and we with him. Yui and I had many shared interests; namely Japanese anime and video games. I introduced him to my favourite anime, and my family taught him how to play card d games. !SžAž3TAGEžž*APANESEžSTUDENT žITžWASžINCREDIBLYžBENElCIALžTOžHAVEž9UIžTOž IžTOž converse with, and ask questions about Japanese language. Likewise, when Yui had questions I was armed with answers, and as a result, both his and my language skills improved greatly. What impressed me most about Yui was his eagerness to immerse himself in Australian culture, whether that being speaking English to strangers, trying Vegemite (which he thoroughly disliked), or kicking the footy at the SANFL; Yui gave everything 110%. His departure was marked by tears on all fronts, and warm hugs all around. My family and I still keep in touch with Yui, who has recently begun his next semester of school. Being a host family through Nazareth was an incredibly rewarding experience, and I would strongly recommend students to embrace the opportunity as we did. Reegan Robinson, 2015 Year 12 Student

The Federation of Catholic School Parent Communities is delighted to share with you its 2015 Annual Report which was presented at our 49th AGM on Saturday 28 May.

Entertainment Books 2016/17 Nazareth has a limited number of entertainment books available at the finance office on the Findon campus. Each book costs only $65 and contains over $10,000 worth of offers. For each book sold, the school receives $13, so please support this fundraiser. There is an alternative to the traditional entertainment book now, and that is the new entertainment digital membership that puts the value of the entertainment book into your Apple or android smartphone. Digital membership is only available when purchased online at https://www.entertainmentbook.com.au/orderbooks/1615x70 For each digital memebership sold, the school receives $13. NOW, Eat, Share Give Fundraising Dinner The three year 11 food and hospitality classes collaborated to showcase their culinary skills, as part of their assessment, to present a contemporary three course Italian inspired menu for the NOW, Eat, Share Give fundraising dinner. Students worked hard prior to the event to prepare elements of the dishes to ensure that they would meet service times. Entrée consisted of 11 elements including arancini served with a basil pesto, polenta bites with confit tomatoes, cream cheese stuffed chillies wrapped in prosciutto, marinated mushrooms, an assortment of cheeses and cold meats and crunchy bread served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The main course was a slow cooked lamb shank served atop a bean puree, the vegetarian option was a melanzane parmigiana. The desserts certainly stole the show with an alternate drop of a vanilla bean panna cotta served with a cherry coulis and crostoli, and chocolate tartufo served with a chocolate disk and hot caramel sauce. On behalf of all three food and hospitality teachers we would like to thank the community for donating ingredients and the year 11 students for rising to the challenge and for going above and beyond. Ms Sarah Chemny, Teacher, Ms Sue Mills, Teacher and Ms Ann-Marie Springhetti, LAC Technology and Food
